How did you get into transformers?

Postby Blasterscream » Fri Aug 31, 2007 9:58 am

Transformers is dear to my heart not just because its awsome it brought me and my older brother together.Being born in the BW era I didnt know much about G1.My brother knew all about G1 so he showed me some video tapes and I started to love them.I remember the first video I saw was "the ultimate doom".Because of my brother I know so much about G1 that Im can beat anyone in my neighborhood in a quiz about transformers(except my brother).

I just liked looking at the toys when I was a little kid and pretty much avoided the Action Figures.but I looked and saw the Transformers Armada and Universe toys and Armada Unicron, and I was hooked.I wanted to get Armada Predacon, but ended up getting Energon Rodimus.

I saw the (then) cool CGI commercial in... '83, '84 (?) and thought they looked cool. At some point later I saw the multi pack of the "limited" series of Transformers (later issues #1-3) and I was hooked.

Well, I was born in 1980. . . .

What really got me into them were the boys I was babysat with. We had a lot of fun with our Transformers. We'd make our own bases and buildings for our TFs out of Construx (which is one of the other coolest toys of my childhood).

Born in '78, so I was a kid when G1 kicked off. The toys were fantastic because you sorta got two for the price of one. And the cartoon was so far ahead of anything else out there. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed GoBots, MASK, He-Man, etc, but TFs was so much better. Looking back now, the characters were better done than in other shows. They weren't so limited to one character trait that totally defined their existance and point to the story.

I think I was into the toys first, got Sideswipe and... it all went from there. Oh, if anyone has a red Lamborghini Countach they don't want, I'd give it a good home.

First of all, Sledgehammer was tits in the day.

As for TF's, I also blame my older brother. I was born in '78 and he's 6 years older than me, which of course means that anything and everything he was into, I had to be into. We both dug TF's when they first came out. I remember when we had the opportunity to actually get leaders (Megatron and Optimus) and he kept telling me to get one, and he'd get the other so we'd have both. I refused as I had to have the same thing he did, so we both ended up getting Optimus Primes that day. Before we even got the figures though, I was watching the show. I was taking my Matchbox cars and making the transforming sound as I'd slowly stand them up on end pretending that they'd transformed into a robot. Good times. Hell with that, GREAT TIMES. He was Sideswipe and I was Sunstreaker. I was Optimus and he was Megatron (after we'd finally gotten a Megatron.) He loved Skywarp and I loved StarScream. Transformers gave me and my brother a way to connect across the large 6 year age difference. And dude, Transformers was sooo way cooler than GI Joe, despite what my brother always said.

I remember in the early 90's watching G1 reruns, then going to beast wars. I have loved Tfs since then. I remember my first transformer was Grimlock, though I always wanted Soundwave.

My Dad
I was three at the time (1994) and we were in a toy store. My dad pointed out a G2 space shuttle, not even sure of the name anymore, and I reluctantly got it. By the time we got home I was a dyed-in-the-wool Transformers fan.
Thank you, Dad.

Belive it or not I got into Transformers the same way I got into Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr. Who, and several other sci-fi shows. (Allthough I'm not into Star Trek and Dr. Who quite as much anymore) True Transformers is a cartoon but being a cartoon about alien robots it is still technically a sci-fi program.

My dad is highly into Star Trek mainly but he likes all sci-fi programming. I grew up watching TV with my dad and (unfortunatly because he'd never shut up) my brother. So basically everything I like today is all stuff I use to watch with my dad including Transformers. He doesn't watch them so much now though. He kinda stayed with the G1/BW/BM continuam. I don't really blame him, so do I, but I've actully watched alot of the newer series before I decided I don't like them.

As far as Star Trek goes, my dad, ask him any question about that series, he'll know it. He even seen the original Captain Pike episode before TOS was canceled for the first time and brought back with Captain Kirk. That's right, everyone thinks Kirk was the first captain of the Enterprise but he was just the replacement for Captain Christipher Pike.

Myself on the other hand, I mainly stay in the relm of TNG and DS9 allthough I have seen episodes of the others I never really got into them as much. TNG was the current series when I was little so I think that's why I kinda stick to the characters in it.

The G1 series is what got me interested when I was four. My family then provided me with the toys and whatnot. As time progressed, I started to watch Beastwars during high school. After that, it was a dark age. For some years, I have not paid attention to the TF empire. However, when the live-action movie came out, it reminded me of how I used to love Transformers. Thus, the fire is rekindled and going strong! :3

I was born in 83, but didn't get into TFs til about 86, when my mother bought me my first TF. Surprisingly enough, my first TF was Wheelie. I know, I know, it's a miracle I stuck with the franchise at all, lol! After that, my parents just kept buying me TFs. I never played with other action figures as a child. When I was about 6 or 7 I got a Leonardo TMNT figure, but other than that, all my toys were TFs. Also when I was 6 or 7, my mom found a TF comic at the grocery store and brought it home to me, it was Marvel issue 68, the tail end of Matrix Quest. I missed the next issue, then got my hands on 70 and started a subscription. I kept buying them in stores for a bit til the subscription kicked in, but I missed one issue. I stopped buying in stores after 74, and my subscription kicked in at 76 (yeah, I missed 75, the big Unicron battle). Anyway, I've been obsessed ever since.

It was the double whammy of the G1 cartoon series and (especially) the UK comic that got me hooked. I can vividly remember sitting in my mum's car outisde the newsagents reading #17, and showing #22 to my babysitter's boyfriend, who thought it was "Sound". The original movie is one of the first films I remember seeing at the cinema, and I remember coming home and playing with my brother, pretending to transform into cars and zooming across the carpet. Ah, good times.

I used to be a Macross fan. The Valkerie-Battroid bot is awesome. Realistic, and great graphics.

When i first saw Transformers on TV, i liked the story. But not much of the bots. Partly because the graphics are not drawn very well. And they transform too fast. Made me think the transformation is impossible. It can only exist in cartoon.

But when i first saw a Transformer toy, i fell in love with it. I realize the cartoon bots can actually be made toys, and their transformation is plausible.

Since then, i became TF fan all the way.

After the 1986 Movie, there's no turning back.

When they first came out I saw them and just wanted Prime, the rest is history! Interestingly enough that same time is when MACROSS came out in Japan as well as other classic animes. Since I love mecha and I love anime TFs G1 was a natural fit for me and I haven't looked back since!

when i was 4 years old, my brothers got me a video tape. that video tape was nothing other than: Transformers (G1) More Than Meets The Eye. I was like: wow... (was so cool to see em.) then i started forgetting about TF's, because i grew up, had a few gf's and started at a new school.

after a year at the new school, i was becoming depressed. i stayed on the internet almost all the time. then i stumbled across seibertron.com (didnt become a member until later) which actually refueled my interest in TF's.
so.. TF really made my life actually bearable and somehow.. fun, through watching the series, and transforming the toys.

and i still got the video tape, with a shiny box cover, barely scratched at all ^^

I was into it during the g1 series... I was about 8 years old. Grew out of it then got back into it after watching the movie. I told myself I would only get Optimus Prime since he was my favorite back then... I went to the stores and could never find him... I never wanted to leave the store empty handed so I bought what was there.

My wife kept making fun of me, but when my son started to sing the transformers theme song, she thought it was cute... so now I'm allowed to buy then.

I've completed the movie line and titanium series.

Now, I only want to complete my Alternators collection and collect all the Optimus Prime figures that I can.

*laughs* I think I'm the lone female responding to this question but proud to do it.

I was born in 1981 and started to watch Transformers becuase it was right after my other show which was Rainbowbright on WGN in the afternoons. Season two was when I really started to remember things, Season one is a blurr mostly becuase I was only three going on four at the time. I was in love with Bumblebee and so wanted one for myself. I used to ask my mother if our car could transform, and interestingly it was due to Transformers that I was able to actually get into other cartoons for boys which I wound up liking (Lead to my love of Anime and comics later) and would watch.

When I was five for my birthday I got Optimus Prime and Inferno. I was so happy, though my parents could never find me a bumblebee, and right now my collection doesn't have one. *sniffles* In the 90s I watched the reruns, used to rent the tapes after they went off the air, and for the longest until 98 actually I wouldn't watch the movie becuase I didn't want to see Optimus Prime Die. (Unfortunatly the day I rented it to watch it with my sister, was the day that Dinobot bit it on Beast wars, so double dose of hero loss in one day. *laughs*)

Basically I sucked my sister into likeing them, and right now I own 56 transformers. I had 15 My little ponys, I have no idea where they are but I know exactly where all of my Transformer peices and parts are, and I actually clean Prime and Inferno ever month to make sure that they aren't dusty. The boxes are long gone sadly. But I love them just the same and proudly tell people about my Tfs.

I think it was a combination of the appeal of the toys in the eighties along with the cool factor of the original cartoon that got me into it when I was a little kid... I just wish I still had all my g1's :(
