Who knows?

And why does this remind me of your other thread on "how do you think entertainment will change in 50 years?"

Teeth, organ, and tissue regeneration is big. They
re gotten to teeth already, just haven't attched the price tage yet.

Robotics is on the way-- cyborgs with sensitive (touch, hot-cold) neuro-controlled parts are already a thing of today. Problem is, no Terminator or GITS yet.

With advances in stem-cell research and cloning technologies, there's really nothing that can be ruled out over the next 50 years.

I would predict that spinal injuries will be treatable, amputees will have more options open to them, and brain damage will have more treatments.

There are already amazing things that can be done with Human Growth Hormone that can dramatically retard the aging process if used in proper doses. Over the next 50 to 100 years, death may be nothing more than a distant possibility.

Given 200 years, I have little doubt that "death" will be reversable.

There are things being done with technology that most people don't have a clue about. Look at how fast things are going. 10 years ago the Discman was the best portable music player you could buy. You could hold, maybe 17 songs on a device that might fit in your pocket if you were tall and thin. Now, with the iPod shuffle, you can hold around 200 songs on a device the size of three stacked quarters. That's just entertainment technology.

You know, I gotta say. If you're using us to do a report for you.

That is pretty low.

Quite.

But some of the most imaginative topics I've seen in a while.

Which is sad.

Ok, I see what you're doing. You were given a project on how certain things may be in the future, medical and entertainment wise so far. So you're using us for ideas to try and think of things that you may have overlooked or not have thought about initially.

And I do agree with DR, they are some of the most imaginative topics we've had in a while.

So, lets see. In 50 years, I think things may be worse off than they are. We rely on so many medications, meds for headaches, meds for cold and cough, and we rely on medication for things that really don't need it. Meds to make people happy, meds to make people concentrate, meds to keep people calm.

Soon I wouldn't doubt we'll be seeing these in patch form. "Happy Happy" patches, street pharmacies will be more and more common, probably regulated by the bigger companies.

Well I probably should have clarified that I didn't mean "using" in my last post as a bad thing. Which is why I offered my input on the subject.

Perhaps euthenasia will be looked better upon. Medical technology will have to evolve along with mankind. People who would have died shortly after being born due to a disability or defect are now living longer lives and reproducing. This is infecting the gene pool and will, quite possibly, lead to all sorts of nasty problems with future generations.

Also, unless a cure for AIDS is found, we'll have a LOT more of that in 50 years. The entire continent of Africa may well be affected.

This looks like a job for CAPTAIN IMMATURITY!

But in all seriousness, I can see either two possible futures:

Future #1: The good one:
Medical advancements get us a cure for anything. You know those things that usually kill people? Cancer, AIDS, and Heart Attacks? Get this: They're gone, kaput. They go the way of Polio. As such, the average human lifespan skyrockets. Then we begin building space colonies just to house the extra billions of people who didn't die, because we'll be running out of room. I suggest the O'Neill Cylinder, seemed to work pretty good in Gundam.

Future #2: The bad one:
Take the last one, and reverse it. Over-dependence on antibiotics cause forced evolution in HIV, AIDS, Cancer, and heart disease. Eventually, HIV mutates to be airborne, and begins picking people off faster than anyone can think of a solution. In short: We're boned. Have a nice day.

I think the cures for missing limbs and disease will be found in ADULT stem cells - they've already proved successful in regrowing adult teeth and assiting people who have heart disease.

I'm hoping by the time I reach rest home care that they have robots taking care of us, cos that'd be cool. If I wasn't in care, but got a robot I'd be really nice too it, so when they rise up and crush humanity they'll be like "Oh, don't disentergrate Jeanette, she's our buddy, she was really nice to me and let me look up robo-porn on her internet account".

Of course, the conservative, fear mongering, paranoid part of me says by the time I hit my elder years there wont' be a mandatory retirement age, it'll be a mandatory euthanisa age.

Hhmm, seems less morbid when I missspel the E word.
Something memorable here.

There will be more or less a treatment for everything. Mankind take drugs like we take a drink. As such, the human body gradually becomes weaker and weaker, until we are so weak that a cold can kill us. A normal cold.

OR

We advance to a point where disease is a thing of the past. Population numbers are tremendous, so the governments of the world decide to cull the herd. The elderly, weak and disabled and killed; producing the 'perfect' human race- no disease, no derformity.

The health organisations of the world- except cosmetics- are demolished.

Of course, then a new disease will spread and we'll all die.

OR

It'll more or less be the same now, except the trend of diseases increasing is seriousness continues. Instead of fighting cancer, we'll fight skin-eating parasites. Things will just continue increasing in severity until a stalemate is reached. At which point- it's them or us. Last stand against imperfection.

OR (My fave)

Disease evolves quicker than we can fight it, so mankind looks to machines for help. The transition from organic to biomechanical to mechanical begins, and mankind takes it's first steps towards immortality.

Of course there are other factors to consider- war, peace, population, space travel, colonisation and terrorism.

Hope that helps.

I also hope you put us in the bibliography of your research :P

Finding out public opinion on a subject is a smart thing to do.
