How Much Do You Spend on Collecting?

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

How Much Do You Spend on Collecting?

Postby faustx » Sat May 14, 2011 5:15 pm

Hey all,

So here's the follow up question to the earlier "how much time are we spending" survey:

How much money do you spend per month on average in support of your collecting?

Hit me with the real goods people....don't tell my gfriend but I'm at about $1k/mth lately.

It depends on the month and whether there is anything worth buying. I can say for sure that I spend more than I can afford and I have the credit card bills to prove it. Now, 1K a month? seriously? Is there 1K worth of Transformers to buy every month? I could probably do that if I didn't want my house, car, food etc.

I buy what I can. Whatever isn't budgeted for my other living expenses and stuff I'm saving for is thrown into my disposable income pile.

Probably about $400 a year. Maybe more depending on what I find. This year is going to be more pricey than normal. Too many figures coming out.

I spend between $400-$800 a year on Transformers? I may collect almost every toy in every series but I don't spend that much. Now that I think of it, I may have over $11,000 worth of Transformers O_o *faints*

If you make that kind of claim you should be able to back it up with pix or something..

As far as my collection, I don't have thew foggiest on what I have put into it from day 1 (way back in 84).
You figure,
complete G1 collection
A few from G2
A few from beast wars and Machines
A few from RID to today..
I have hundreds (maybe thousands.. I have never counted) of TF's in my house.

But not being a completest means I spend less.
Example, from ROTF I only purchased 4 figures..
From animated I purchased 6
From generations/RTS I buy every thing I can get my hands on (including the Botcon box set with the coneheads).

One of these days I am going to have to count how many I have..
Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
I look forward to attending a Botcon soon only to settle matters with several idiots in person (yes this is a threat).

It's exaggeration. I'm not quite sure the worth, it's OVAR 9000, I mean 1,000, all my friends just make that assumption. But I just count the worth of it today. About 11 G1 figures, 1 G2 figure, 1 Beast Wars figure, Almost all Energon figures, 167+ Cybertron figures (well, whatever amount of Cybertron figures there were minus Scourge, Crumplezone, Jetfire, and Thundercracker, than thats how many I have of that line), 50+ Movie Figures maybe, Every Classics Figure minus Grimlock, All of Wave 1 and 2 of Animated, All of Wave 1-3 of ROTF, A few of HFTD, and All of Wave 1 of DOTM, how much would that be worth today?

P.S: I'm getting pics up, as soon as I dig out my boxes and get all of my figures out, I'll be able to support it. As you see in my signature, I'm working on it.

I'm not even going to gauge the value until I see pics.

Heck, I'm missing a ton of AEC stuff, but thanks to a few members on this board and other sites, I'll be adding about 40 figures to my AEC collection soon.

This thread is making me wish I could unpack all my TFs and update my collection thread. I've got a lot of good stuff since I took those pics that I want to add.

My collection is definitely worth over 11K. I didn't pay that much for it, but I've been able to score some awesome deals thanks to my patient hunting.

Depends on what Hasbro has on the shelf.

When the movie figs saturate the pegs I spend less. I only have an interest in about 20-30% of the line.
Generations/Reveal the Shield and even PCC are what's been hurting my pocket.
The pendelum swings and I'll save some money the next few months.

Probably yearly I spend about $5k give or take a few hundred.

I usually spend less than $50 per month. The focus of my collection is pretty narrow, so it keeps the TF budget low.

Collecting everything about $10k a year - on TF's specifically maybe less than $1k, and that would include expensive-ass 3rd party stuff.

I've spent way more than I should have in the past month and a half, but I justify it with how little I spent the first 3 1/2 months of the year due to nothing much to get. I MAY drop $75-100 per month on average (which is about $80-105 more than my wife wishes I'd spend [you do the math there lol])

As far as total spent (Hasbro & 3rd Party), I almost fainted when I reach like $1700 & had only counted up about 10 figures. Got FP CC with Alt Prime's gas can etc pack for 170, Cyb Starscream, Unicron & Primus at 55 each, ROTF Devy for 98, 12 leaders at an average of 40 a piece etc UGH! Maybe Id have a better car & no PMI on my mortgage had TF's never "resurfaced" to the mainstream lol

Back in the day I use to buy all the new toys that were out, except for re-paints. I'm sure I spent a few grand, but I've gotten rid of alot of my collection, just kept the ones that are dear to me. I'm to the point where I can't be hardcore like I use to be. So I'm only going to spend maybe 20-40 bucks a month if there's any TF's worth buying. I'm just going for the certain ones, not everything like I use to.

I'd like to keep it to under $100/month, but there have been some pretty crazy months. Around Christmas, I had the reissue Predaking, MP Rodimus Prime, and other items coming in (oh, RTS line). That was a bad time. Picked up a few movie figures recently, and a 3rd party product or two. So maybe $150 - 200/month.

There are some older figures I'd like to start catching up on, like G1 gestalts. But I'll have to wait until new product purchasing slows down. I've been an avid collector of the Classics figures and subsequent iterations.

I posted a couple days ago. And I can now say, that with me being back, I'll probably spend 100 a month just playing catch up and what not. Trying to re-add to my collection. Within the past two days, I spent $142.

Oh and one thing, credit cards don't mix well with a Transfan! It's hard trying to not max out my Target card, lol.
