My brother bought an opened item portable DVD player from Best Buy last Christmas. Didn't come with a battery, but came with a free gift card (either $15 or $20, I don't remember).
So far it's worked pretty well.
I hate Best Buy

Well that was your fault actually. It was an open item. There is normally a good reason for it being returned. You taking a crapshoot on the item and having it be broken isn't their fault.
He should confirmed with them (before hand) that it was something returnable. If I buy anything open box (realizing it's opened for a reason) I make sure I have a loop hole, especially if I'm spending mucho dough.
If they say yes, then I'm on it like vomit.
If they say no, then off I go.

Even if one employee says yes, though, and that goes against store policy, then can still turn around and not refund / exchange it. Unless you can prove they said yes, of course. Perhaps it's better to get something in writing, but most stores probably won't do that under the belief that "somebody else will buy it".

That's one of the reasons I now carry my MP3 player with it's voice recorder everywhere I go.
