Is the novelization any good?
I'm wondering if it's worth shelling out for Alan Dean Foster's novelization of the movie. Is it something I should spend my hard-earned cash on?

Alan Dean Foster? Ahhh!
I have never read a book by that man since Splinter of the Mind's Eye, though I have not read the TF book.
Guess that didn't really answer the question.
If you don't want to buy it perhaps you could rent it at your library?

Eh. I found it kind of so-so. Many of the funny/interesting bits of the movie aren't in it, or are meh-ly altered, and the expanded/added stuff I didn't find all that interesting. Worse, all the Autobots come off seeming too much alike in personality... and they all talk like Perceptor on a particularly confusing day.
The prequel, Ghosts of Yesterday, is really good, though. Lots of interesting characterization and plot for both sides (especially Starscream) in that one. Kind of weird, considering that the same author wrote both, but there you have it.

Compared to the movie, it was terrible. Every good line was cut out, and the fight scenes seemed dumbed-down.
I would have to say no, don't buy it. Watch the movie instead.

In this land we have defended,
From all things dark and cruel,
Now we are defenseless
In a land where dragons rule!
Me, Grimlock, BADASS!!!!
