Is This The Golden Age? - TFSource Article

Postby Maz » Tue May 19, 2015 5:06 pm

Is this the golden age of Transformers? While it's tempting to look at years gone past and recall the good old days, we might actually be better off as fans and collectors now than we ever have been. If we consider the toys that are available to us, to our children, the new media we have access to and the people who we can share it with, have we ever had it so good? If someone stepped into the hobby today, would they be missing out particularly on the treasures of the past in terms of community atmosphere, events or toys?

I agree. If this isn't "The Golden Age", it's certainly a golden age, or at least one of the best times to be a Transformers fan of any age. My four and a half year old nephew Facetimed with me over this past weekend to show me the new Rescue Bot toy he got (Blurr). Then he wanted to watch me take apart Menasor, transform all the Stunticons back and forth, and then reassemble Menasor. He lives a time zone away from me, and I only get to visit with him once or twice a year, but through today's technology and Transformers brand expansion, I'm still able to be a presence in his life as he grows up. :)

The "golden age" was in the 80's.

What we are now experiencing is what can be called an epoch. It's the origin of a NEW era. For example the Jurassic age had three epochs. Google it because i wont go into detail.

Now to establish the epoch of an era we have to all agree upon an instant in time for the origin of this new era. Was it the first Micheal Bay movie in 2007 that brought the franchise back into mainstream consciousness?
Was it the Generations line updating all the characters from the golden age?

That is the question that must be answered and will give a definition to your query.

If i may be so bold as to ANSWER your question from the thread title , NO , this is not the golden age. What you want to call this era/age in the franchise is up to you guys to decide.

That's my two cents on the matter as of now. >:oP

I'd like to invite some senior members and scholars of these forums to chime in on this subject. It's a hard one to define and is worthy of discussion.

I am loving what is happening with Transformers right now. The new MP's are nice if you are into spending that kind of money. The Generations/Combiner Wars line is great if you want an affordable G1 cast, and the new RID line is great for the kids. All bases are covered.

I think the movies got a lot of people back into collecting and has grown the hobby in ways that probably wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Going by the definition of ages based on comic book history...

G1 would be the Golden Age.

I think maybe the Silver Age would be Beast Wars through the Energon Trilogy.

The movies, Transformers Animated and the Classics line ushered in the Bronze Age.

Are we still in the Bronze Age now? I'm not sure what comes after that.

Golden age? Don't make me laugh, in a golden age things wouldn't be hard to walk into a store and buy. I'd go with the gas age, since you burn a tank of gas driving around town all day looking for product and still wind up with nothing but air.

Except that's not the way that the term is being used at all in this context. It's being used to refer to an era of great prosperity, and the current variety of toys available to the consumer certainly seems to qualify. You may not be able to walk into any store and find whatever you want as soon as it is released, but the stuff is generally easy enough to come by if you are patient and willing to shop online.

I think this article is more in the sense of the figures and the creativity of the line rather than the availability.
