Holy cats! Remind me never to move to California! I make horrendous amounts of cash from dumpster diving, when I can....My ex-brother-in-law makes more than I doing the same thing!

Best of luck to ya, dear!

Dumpster diving is taking stuff out of commercial or private trash. Credit card info can be stolen this way. The phrase can also be taken literally, some teens dive into dumpsters as pranks or dares.

Yikes!!!!! I remember my first apartment was furnished from dumpsters. Of course we lived right off a huge army base in Colorado where people would get orders to go overseas. They are only allowed a certain amount of weight so it was quite often that there was nice furniture sitting next to dumpsters in apartment complexes.

Dumpster diving can be profitable in a less fraudulant sense. My ex-brother-in-law dove commercial dumpsters for broken computers and such....You get 500 broken laptops out of the dumpster and you can make maybe 200 completely functional laptops, sell each for $200....I am sure you can do the math! He actually makes a living this way!

As for thefts of personal information, it DOES happen a lot! When we dove, and found things with social security numbers and the like on it all the time, we would shred it ourselves...Why bother with stealing money when you can work a bit (more fun than work actually) and make LEGAL money? Good times!

I spent 36 days house arrest and 10 days in jail. Not for dumpster diving though. House arrest really was'nt that bad except for the fact it was over the holidays. Jail sucks and i would'nt recommend it to anybody! Very happy for you congrats! :APPLAUSE:

Well, glad you do not have to do a forced stay in the local Greybar Hotel! Never good times in there!

At least with house arrest, you get lovely ankle jewelry..matches everything in everyone's wardrobe! ;)

Really, people? Dumpster diving? Kids pulling pranks and dares is one thing, but if you're really so broke that you have to dig through others' trash to make some cash, maybe you shouldn't be spending it all on toys. Then again, TFs bought with money made from selling another's trash is about as close to free as you can get, so enjoy!

It's got nothing to do with being broke, and more to do with what Pyro and Missourisnowflakes said... people are shamefully wasteful and throw away things that are still good. I don't care how rich I am... if I see something thrown away I could use and is still in good shape, I'll still decide to give it a better home than the landfill.

Arresting someone for dumpster diving has to be the most ridiculous thing I've heard of. What's next, 90 days in jail for jaywalking?

I find myself wondering how house arrest is handled logistically. I mean, I don't leave my house much either, but I still have to do things like buy food and take my clothes to the laundromat. I will assume that if you stop being able to pay rent and get evicted because you can't work from home, they just turn it into a regular jail sentence.

As far as how they handle the house arrest it usually depends on the severity of the charge or if it's a first offense. They have numerous types of devices for house arrest. Your basic ankle bracelet with box. You hook it up directly to your phone line and it dials in when you get into range to let them know your home. Them being the place that issues you the device (UPI). The basic one is'nt like a GPS and your not a dot on a screen where they can follow you. It's kinda like an honor system. They will require you to get your work hours from your employer though every week. They usually give you a certain amount of time to get to and from work and they also understand you need to stop and get gas and essentials. As long as you call in and let them know you have to stop they usually are pretty good about it as long as you don't give them any trouble. The other devices though are no joke. They are GPS tracking systems and they do know where you are at all times! They also have video monitoring devices that will watch you at home! And ankle bracelets that do read the level of alcohol in your system! And you are responsible to pay for these devices if you have to get them. :-( So everyone be careful and try not to get into to much trouble or just don't get caught! ;)^

I still find arresting someone for dumpster diving rather silly, though. Don't see why there should be something illegal about obtaining and keeping something someone else got rid of and thus obviously doesn't want and already relinqished ownership of... IMHO you should only get arrested if you actually do something illegal with your new acquisitions (like identify theft).

I too think getting arrested for dumpster diving is kinda stupid. I mean people leave T.V.s, couches, and any other bigger objects out by their trash so people will pick them up! I know there has been a few times we've left certain things such as metal on the curb and people scoop it up right away to recycle it for money! I can see where a problem arises with identity theft though. I guess if they don't want people rummaging around in a public dumpster they should start shredding their trash with personal info. on it!

it's all just so stupid!
why can't the humans do what i myself have teaken for granted: protect yourself, shred you docs.?

This Nanny Government just makes the pitiful humans that much more pitiful.

lameness knows no bounds.
laws that keep us safe from the evils and neglects? Fantastic! I appreciate the lawgivers in this.
laws that coddel us and keep us in our bassenets? truely idoitic. Humans cry for their keeps and don't realize the banana come throught the bars.

For the record, as a kid I use to go through the local dump and do a bit of scavenging so I do have experience.

However as far as dumpster diving rules go, i'm all for them.

Why? Well aside from the invasion of privacy reasons (yes, people SHOULD destroy sensitive information but not everyone thinks to do that) but there's also the health reason.

What happens if you jump in and and prick yourself on a used needle? Or impale yourself on something else?

What about those who dumpster dive for food and they end up eating something that was rotten and end up sick from it?

This is a major reason these laws exist, because of the health risks involved.

Sure, you take responsibility for your dives, just like I use to do as a kid at the dump, but you're deluding yourself if you think people are going to take responsibility for their own actions. You just know that someone out there is likely to prick themselves on a needle, get some disease, then turn around and sue.

Laws aren't there to not only protect those who aren't responsible, but they're also there to protect us from idiots. And no, i'm not labelling anyone in this thread an idiot, i'm talking about those out there in the world who would do stupid things and that cause rules like this.
