James Cameron as new director for TF2

Postby marcusg » Mon Aug 27, 2007 8:45 pm

I'm just saying. What if Cameron came back and was given the chance to make TF2, how do you guys think it would turn out ? Better story telling, better design,...better than Bay's Interpretation ? I was just pondering on that thought. What do you guys think ? Remember what he did for the Aliens franchise (Aliens). IMO, that was the best of the bunch. Better than the first one.

Bay will direct TF2.

Sometimes changing directors kills a franchise. For every "Aliens" there's a "Batman Forever".

That's what I'm talking about. If anybody can do it right, he be the one. I mean he would take full creative control over the whole thing, from the story line, screenplay, to the designs. Yeah it would take a while but not any longer then how long the first one took, but I'm sure it would be worth the wait. Again, I'm just saying :-? .

If Cameron did direct it, it would be interesting to see. But for Transformers 2 I'm glade Bay is doing it.

Apart from the fact Cameron probably wouldn't touch Transformers with a barge-pole, add to that the fact he hasn't actually directed anything for ages asides from deep sea explorations of the Titanic.. I prefer the same director to continue the work.
If Bay is really in it for the money, so be it; what I dislike most is a film series that changes style and - usually - gets crap because of it. All because the director leaves.
See Batman - Batman and Robin (although Begins is a return to excellent form)
X-Men - X-Men 3 (I'll never forgive Bryan Singer for that)

Most recent film series I've seen which worked *perfectly* is the Bourne trilogy. Music/style/actors/production/director all remained constant and you have an amazing product at the end of it.
True, Transformers being Transformers, I'm expecting it to go hideously wrong at some point.

I like the way he shot his movies. They are beautifully shot! Don't really like the way Bay shot his movies though.

Cameron is good with atmosphere and giving a deep insight into the world he's portraying. Aliens is one of my favourite films, the production value alone is astounding; I will never be tired of seeing that Queen Alien and the oozing rib-cage corridors of the hives as the aliens uncoil themselves. No CG! :D
Bay is a bit of an idiot, it is true. Armageddon was horrendous and I refuse to watch Pearl Harbour, but I have the Island on DVD. The guy knows action, especially vehicular action, cars and things that move vast. Transformers in its very nature is vehicular action, it doesn't need deep insight. The only thing Bay can't do is fight scenes, they were too blurred (especially BB/Barricade and Sam/Frenzy). But then.. a lot of films do that these days and it does annoy me.
Don't get me wrong though, I would be interested/thrilled to see a Cameron-made Transformers film, and if he'd made the first one I would have loved it as much as the Bay film.

Hey, Michael Bay did a great movie but he also screwed up. It was a good moie but it could have been a hundred million time better whit anybody else as a director.

Bay started the trilogy but that does not mean we are stuck whit him for the next few years. Look, the Harry Potter film changed director lots of time.

Harry Potter films are a pretty close exception.. except for the fact that 1 and 2 feel like Christmas specials, the third is suddenly a lot darker. They are more consistant in that they have the same actors and sets throughout.

I don't think ANY director would have done a million times better than Bay :P I don't think Danny Boyle or Mel Gibson would have done very well at all lol. And they are directors I have some respect for.

My opinion, the most consistant trilogies have the same director; Bourne, Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, and it is better for it.
It is true though that series can be improved with a new director/team. Batman Begins vastly improved on something that was already regarded as perfect (that being Tim Burton's Batman), and Star Wars (the original three) vastly improved having someone other than Lucas directing for Empire and Jedi.

I will bet that this transformers movie will be better if James direct it. Bay did a good job but I still have gripes with the way he shot the action scenes. Too messy for me. His excuses would be that we can feel that we are in the middle of the action. I just don't like it, that is all. James would have done differently and better.

James Cameron's Transformers would be about 400 million dollars more expensive is what it amounts to, hehe.

I'll trust Bay for #2.

Cameron has done some great scifi, I'm suprised nobody has mentioned T1 and T2: Judgement Day. For being nearly 20 years old, T2 is still a huge deal to me. Too bad it all went to hell with a new director for T3. He's got The Abyss, as well as another of my favorites, True Lies, which is absolutely great, if not really far out there.

Hell, even Dark Angel started as an interesting enough idea, and helped get a luscious hottie onscreen more often.

But for it to actually work well, I think he'd have to have started the movie franchise, not just pick it up from another director. It'd tie his hands enough that I don't think he'd be interested.

That's an awesome list of great movies he's done. No wonder his name sounds so familiar. :)
