You can tell detroit paid the production company off. Why would they change the makes of the cars. Two reasons for this:
1. Bay didn't want Bumblebee to be associated with herbie the Love Bug. Which, really, who wants that?
2. VW didn't want their cars associated with war, because they didn't want anyone to remember that make planes and cars for the Nazis in the '30s and '40s. (That would probably lose them some business.)
