Leader Megatron Review, Hasbro VS Custom..I so Want this done!!!

Postby skywarp-2 » Wed Jul 18, 2007 9:27 am

Ok, well as many of you know, I'm a Book writer when it comes to this forum, and since I have decided to go in late to work, I wanted to give this subject a proper review.

I like the Movie Megatron, at first I was a little aprehensive with the design, but once I saw the Movie and saw Megatron in action, it really took a hold on my imagination. Many of you have bought a Leader Class Megatron and may have been disappointed as I was as well.

But then I saw something that cought my eye, and that was the custom variant paint scheme that Timshin on ebay sold for like $275.00!! I was astonished at the quality and level of craftmanship that went into simply repainting this figure. Hasbro did a great job in the casting of this toy, but overall the paint applications made it seem less than real..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... &rd=1&rd=1

So if you decide to get this done I suggest you buy one and then buy another to repaint, that way you can keep the Hasbro one in the Box, and the correct painted one for display, which it still, if sold, would fetch a pretty penny on ebay.

So lets get started:

Specific stages were developed to ensure the correct paint applications were completed:
Stage 1: Diassemble and repaint after primering..
Image
Stage 2: After the basic coloring was applied then reassemble..
Image
Stage 3:Weathering and detailing
Image

I assume the final Stage was the application of the sealer and clear coat for protection..

Who knows why Hasbro decided to go with the look they came up with for the color scheme, but I gotta say, the new improved version is much better. We can only hope to get a Robovision repaint from Target, or a Wal-Mart exclusive repaint..but as it is, I have decided to get my friend whose an expert painter and customizer to replicate Timshin's work and only for $50.00.

Altmode: Now the detailing on the Cybertronian Jet just stands out more, and because Megatron is more unified in his Metallic Silvery Paint with Gold accents, he really looks awesome!! Not to mention the head is hidden very well in Cybertronian Jet mode due to the colors matching..Wow!!

I feel almost evil doing this, showing them side by side, ofcourse there is just no contest..

Megatron's face should have had coloring to accent his Monsterous teeth from which he viciously commands his troops..In my repainted version I think I will have my friend recolor the cheek Plates a little darker Gun Metal color and give it a definite seperation line from the main nose, since his nose is not supposed to be a Monkey nose like these pictures show:
Image
Image
Image
The shadows and gold accents actually give him a more defined and realitsic look. On Cybertron His title was "Lord High Protector" Megatron, and with that, the Metallic Silver and Gold accents really bring out the regal look to him as the valiant protector gone bad! He almost has a ceremonial look about him too..

Overall this image of him in the box makes me want to get another and have him repainted, Hasbro's version just looks so much unreal and toylike in comparison, especially with the movie Megatron image on the box:

Image
Image

Had they given Leader Class Prime a Metallic Silver paint scheme but left the darker reds and Blues, he would have looked even better and would be a fitting pal to the repainted Movie Megatron version.. But his toyish grey stands out if you place them together, see below:
Image

Overall Movie Megatron is a Nice figure, and from what Timshin said about the repaint is that its electronics still work and the paint application is sealed with a sealer to prevent scrapes and paint chipping, but minor ware and tare will occur due to transformations, IMO it would only add more of a weathered look..still sealers work very well at protecting paint from chipping, so its not an issue for me..

Bottom line in this review, Hasbro = 6 for sculpting and design. Timshin Custom = 8 for completing the process for Hasbro and making him a very sought after custom. Not a 10, because of the head/Neck and fusion canon issues..

One thing to note is that during the repaint process, it might be beneficial to correct the Fusion Canon spring in Megatron's hand so that it fits together better..more info on that in other threads..

Thanks for viewing, I hope I have entertained you some, and I hope you see what a real difference coloring can make on this Megatron Movie Figure.

True Dat!! Me and my friend Rob, a Master Painter, are going to buy 5 of them and paint them and place them on ebay, trust me his work is almost flawless and would even beat the Timshin version from above in my review, this guy I know is amazing!!! We may even do 2 Primes in Metallics for sale as well, it just depends on the demand, but it might just be good to do just one, stay posted I'll let you guys know when they are up on ebay to check them out.

Thanks for the compliment, I am glad you enjoyed the review! :D

I just wanted to point out that in the review I show Timshin's version with the large nose section, if you look at the box image of Megatron's face, you can clearly see that there is supposed to be a separation from the Cheek Bone Plate and his actual nose..Look below for images:

I have 2 thoughts on this:

1. It probably didn't happen the first time through because it would have looked too much like metal and mommies wouldn't have bought the "sharp" pointy toy.

2. I expect any subsequent redeco of this toy to be more accurate to the film. The first release is seemingly a rush-job.

Even so, that paint job is still amazing. I do see what you're talking about and I do believe the darker gun metal should do nicely.

Wow I just cant get over how good that looks. I was not a fan of movie Megs at first but now....

yeah, but I'm too impatient for them to make up their minds, and like I said earlier, these figures really are wonderful sculpts and engineering, the rushed Paint Applications and such really drive the quality down. But as far as the metallic Paint making mother's squeemish..I don't really know..Robovision is selling like hotcakes!!!

yeah I know, I bought Megs simply to complete my movie line collection, until I saw this repaint, I wasn't too thrilled to own him, Now I want another!!!

oh and when I was talking about doing a Leader Prime repaint, I did mean only the Grey parts would be modified to be Metallic silver leaving the rest the way it is, the Robovision had it right, except the blue and lighter reds are not Movie accurate... so a little modification and a Leader Prime that's well worth standing next to a Metallic Leader Megatron. I'll post some images once Rob gets it completed.
