Man Achieves Feat of Awesomeness: Kills Bear w/Stick

Postby Senor Hugo » Fri Oct 10, 2008 10:47 am

A Canadian man achieved a new feat of Awesome, after killing a Canadian Black Bear with a stick.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldne ... ve-it.html

For the technologically lazy.

A man who was attacked by a black bear while walking his dogs survived only after crushing the creature's skull with a stick.

Jim West needed 60 stitches on his head and body to close wounds from the terrifying attack.

The 45 year old was out walking his dogs on Saturday in British Columbia, Canada, when, he said, he heard a grunt and turned around.

'All I saw was eyes full of hatred,' he said afterwards.

'I had no option … So I stuck my foot up and tried to kick her in the face.'

The bear responded by attacking him and knocking him to the ground.

'I rolled onto my stomach and clasped my hands at the back of my neck,' Mr West said.

'She tore into my skull at the back of my head, moved over and bit me on the left side of my body, on my ribs and left arm.'

But Mr West was not about to go down without a fight. Battling to his feet, he managed to grab a stick about as thick as his arm.

'I said, in effect, bring it on sweetie,' he said. 'I took one step forward — smash! I swung the stick and broke it over her head.

'She kind of stood there and shook it off, like she was stunned. I realised if I didn't continue the attack she would knock me to the ground again and I would not get up.

'I swung my piece of wood like a sledgehammer driving spikes and I kept swinging till she was lying flat on the ground and there was blood coming out of her nose.'

The 5ft 9in man eventually crushed the bear's skull with the stick, killing it. He then walked a mile to a local lodge, where he was transported to hospital.

Even conservation officers were shocked by the terrifying incident, saying they were surprised he had lived.

Sadly, the bear was the mother of two young cubs - who had to be euthanised because it was believed they would not survive the cruel Canadian winter without her.

Even so, he said, he did not regret what he had done - believing it had been necessary for him to survive.

That's unfortunate. Sucks when the kids have to pay the consequences for their parents' bad decisions.

Yeah, the putting down of the two cubs did suck. I can't think that there wasn't a zoo, or some Canadian mountaineer who raises bears that they could go to instead of having to put them to sleep.

I wonder what happened to the dogs? Did they even try to help?

At first I thought it was cool, but then I remembered that black bears won't actually go after humans unless they're protecting something. The bear probably saw the man as a threat to her cubs and thus went on the offense.

Bears in general will leave people alone with the exception being the polar bear. They're are the only known bear that will actually go after a human unprovoked.

There are animal sanctuaries all over the place. There had to have been somewhere they could have put the cubs until they were old enough to take care of themselves.

Pity the bear-mom had to die because she crossed path with Billy-Bob and his huntin' dawgs. She was just doing what bears do when they have cubs. That is one of the WORST times you can stumble upon a bear, for they will stop at next-to-nothing to kill you when they have cubs in tow.

Poor dear just was in the wrong place at the wrong time. :(

To be fair, Billy-Bob was just doing what humans do when something is masticating their skulls.

You have to wonder though, how bear newspapers would be covering this right now.

Did anyone seen the article in the Onion a couple of weeks ago about the Mountain Lion that bravely fended off a pack of humans that invaded its territory?

Well, he exceptions being the Polar Bear, Brown Bear, Grizzly Bear, and well most bears except for the black bears, sloth bears, and most Pandas(though they will @#$% you up something fierce)

I love bears, my goal is to own some land in the country and get a couple black bears as pets. Bears were always apart of my life.

So I feel for the momma bear. She was trying to protect her cubs.

However, the man went out to walk his dogs, so even though it's Canada I have a good notion that he lives in probably a suburb or something. A place where, again, even though it's Canada, you most likely don't have bears hanging around down the street.

Which probably means the momma bear was searching for food for her cubs. Which means she was most likely going to kill him, his dogs or whichever didn't get away in time.

So he really didn't have much of a choice in the matter. And to be frank, I doubt even the most hardcore member of PETA would say "gee momma-bear, you have cubs, and your probably hungry, so how about I set aside my wallet so my corpse can be identified and then you can go ahead and maul me and my widdle Chihuahua Mr.ShakesALot"

No, they'd scream, cry, run away and then try to kill the bear as it gnawed on their skull.

Faulty assumption I believe - Even people who live in the wilderness have to walk their dogs; it's not an exclusively suburban thing.

Plus, here in Colorado anyway, I've seen locals take their dogs into nearby areas of the national park to walk them (they aren't supposed to but they do it anyways), and though bears are pretty sparse around here (I've never seen one in person), it's still a possibility to run into one just about anywhere in the park.

Same thing could be said of Missouri too, actually. We still had bears back there, and rednecks, hicks, and boonies took their dogs for walks in the woods all the time. Odds were better you'd run into a methlab, but it was still possible you could encounter a small bear.

How is it I've lived where I've lived, and never actually seen a bear in person? Seriously, I missed the one that followed I-44 (the highway that connected my undergrad school to my family's home) to Onondaga Caves (where I was working), and the one that wandered up to the Wal-Mart when I lived in Jeff City. And in this entire time I've only seen one moose while a classmate of mine saw two just last weekend!
