By the way, I've already got a bid on Ironhide, and it hasn't even been 24 hours! Wooo!
Now lets see if I get any more...

Already a bid huh? Seems like people really want a G1 movie ironhide...id better hurry before the hype dies down.

Unforunately i hit a snag (as usuall) and i have to strip all the paint off of the bot mode parts and re-paint them. Im just not having any joy with anything acrylic based as it all just chips off. Its useless. I dont understand why so many other people have such an easy time with it cos i aint.

So instead im gonna strip all the acrylic paint off and re-paint those parts with two-pack car paint, which dries rock hard and is much more durable. I painted an alternator silverstreak with the stuff and its as hard as nails and never chipped.

So, be warned: Acrylics can suck.

And they can also suck my balls. Freaking 2 weeks wasted...lousy swines.

The paint that chipped off was the acrylic stuff that supposedly doesnt chip that everyone else uses, so i intend on using super strong automotive paint instead. Its niether acrylic or enamel, and its tough stuff. And contrary to popular beleif it doesnt harm the plastic (since its used on cars, which have plastic bumpers) and it wont chip.

But i have a REAL car that i need to respray, so work on this will have to wait for a while.

What type of paint is that? Or maybe just the brand? Water-based? Solvent-based?

Its not a brand name, we get it delivered for when we respray cars.

But its called two-pack, one part paint, one part activator (hardener). Without the hardener the paint would NEVER dry, and i mean never.

Hence why its called "two-pack", you guys probably call it something else over there.

But yeah, its used on cars so its very durable. I wouldnt recommend using it if you are just a hobby-ist, this is pro stuff which needs to be applied with an airbrush at the right pressure etc etc. Im only using it cos i know its tough, and i have access to all the right equipment. But like i said work will have to go on hold on my ironhide for now as i have to respray a real car, and get it ready for the road as its my car lol.

If you could get us ordering information, I think we'd all appreciate it. Something that works on a car would definitely work on a toy. Fo' shizzle.

I live in the UK, you wont be able to order from the same people as i do as they are just down the road from our workshop, so we just call em up and place orders by phone, we also know them personally.

But go to any auto paint supplier, or body and custom garage and ask in there, they should be able to help you.

Im not really aware of any well known name franchise of stores over there that i can recommend, since i dont live there. :P

I would imagine however, that the paint you can buy in cans that is used to repair miner paint scruffs and small dents on cars is the same sorta stuff though, which you can buy in any AutoZone store (the only car place i can think of that you have over there) or if not they could probably tell you of a store or website that can sell you automotive paints.

Just remember they cant be applied by brush, and they usually require mixing in either seperate thinners and hardener compounds before you can use them otherwise the paint wotn ever dry (it depends on if you use two-pack paint or just cellulose. Two-pack requires hardener to be mixed into it otherwise it will never dry, where as cellulose doesnt.) They aint anything like hobby paints where you just open the jar and dip your brush in. You need a well ventilated enviroment as well as an air compressor to power your air brush (or a compressed air can) or at the very least a well ventilated area if you use spray cans.

Its a rather expensive process just for a toy. Im only using it as i have access too all the equipment and paints for free, as we always have stuff left over from our car resprays, but if you can afford it or have access to the right equipment i highly recommend it as i have had no problems with car paints on my toys, but endless problems with acrylics hence why i am fed up (and angry) at acrylics and putting them down with every chance i get cos i just wasted 3 weeks worth of hard work on my ironhide figure, something that i put all my heart into, and now thanks to the chipping paint i gotta start all over. :-x :-x

Sounds like epoxy paint with catalyst. Maybe that's that it is called in our place.

Is is possible for you to take pictures of the bottle or can of the paint?

Some vendors in our place are quite dumb. Hard to explain to them. Often times, i just show them a picture of what i want. :)

Car is metal and plastic (bumpers), its safe. Not to mention i painted an alternator silversteak with car paint and the plastic is fine and its the best paint i have ever worked with, and none of it has chipped off, unlike the acrylic stuff ive used.

Taking a picture wont do no good, as the paint i buy isnt a brand name, its just mixed up into a tin, and has a sticker on it saying what color it is, i doubt it will supply much information to you.

Just go to a car re-paint store and ask for some car paint that is thin enough to be used in a small air brush. If they have an IQ equal to that of a baboon they should be able to tell you what exactly you need and what is most durable if you tell them what you are gonna use it for.

But be warned, this method of painting requires the figure to be taken apart and masked up. But beleive me if you have enough skill, the end results OWN anything that acrylics can do.

Taking TF toy apart is something of a taboo for me. Haven't tried doing that yet. Afraid some joints may loosen up, or screws get loose thread.

But i may have to go into that sometimes soon.

are you really going to use car paint on a 8" toy? have you tried enamels? i can't really tell from your posts. I would suggest, if you want a mirror finish paint job, use enamels and an airbrush. look at the prime repaint in the first page's posts...I'm pretty sure he used enamel sprayed with an airbrush.

mine dry fine too.

Ive used enamels before, they are ok but i dont have any left and i cant afford to buy any, so im gonna use some left over car paint in an airbrush. They look just as good if not better. What does size have to do with it?

Probably the relative thickness of the paint material compared to the size of the object to be painted.

This is why (if you are good like me :P ) you lay the paint on very thin with the airbrush. Car paint covers a lot better than acrylic brushed-on paint, so because of this you dont have to apply so many coats.

I painted an alternator silverstreak (turned him into G1 Bluestreak) with car paints that even had metal flake in it, and there was no loss of detail at all.
