Need a guide on the IDW 'verse
Hi,
I've never been too big into comics. However, I recently picked up the Spotlight Trade Paperback on a whim and really enjoyed it, especially the Hot Rod Spotlight.
I know that IDW rebooted the G1 universe. However, i am not sure what order to read their offerings in.
Could someone please give me a breakdown of what they have done so far in this line of work and in what order they should be read?
Thanks!

Ok, I've been reading around and figured out this much. The series are in the following order.
Infiltration
Stormbringer
Escalation
Devestation
Revelation
Expansion
Now, how do the Spotlights play into this? Are there any other comics in this continuity or is this it?

I'm havin ga hard time following too, since i'm reading dreamwaves series at the same time, and i keep re-reading things, then i re-read beast wars and start thinking about if that is related (which it's not, apparently)
I can't remember the exact order of the spotlights, but in each issue you get a hint of the time frame it takes place.
THese were spotlights BEFORE escalation came out.
Shockwave
Nightbeat
Hot Rod
Sixshot
Ultra Magnus
These are the spotlights after escalation.
Soundwave
Kup
Galvatron
Optimus Prime
Not sure if their release order (before/after escalation) has anythin to do with their actual place in the time lines though, i can't remember it all! Galvatron and Kup threw me off!

Stormbringer and Infiltration happen at the same time, so they can be read either order, but Infiltration was released first.
The order (that I can think of) goes:
Megs origins (haven't read this yet, but I imagine it would be the first one).
Shockwave.(set 4 million years ago. Important as it sets in motion the events of the other story arcs)
Magnus. (set 29 years before Infiltraion.)
Soundwave.(set in 1984)
Infiltration (set in 2006/7.)
Stormbringer.
Nightbeat. (technically, the very end of Nightbeat is around issue 5 of Infiltration with the rest probably a day or two before.)
Escalation.
Prime.
Galvatron. (Starts part way through Prime's spotlight.)
Devastation. (starts 3 weeks after Escalation.)
Revelations.
Expansion.
We have to time setting for Sixshot, Hot Rod and Kup, but it's safe to assume they happen at some point before Infiltration. Sixshot takes place before the end of Escalation FACT. But we don't know how long before.
Kup takes place at some point before Prime, but we don't know how long. Hot Rod has nothing to connect with any others yet, but Furman has confirmed that will change in Revelations.
Devastation is the arc that will start in September, with TBP's of Infiltration, Escalation and Stormbringer out already.

Waaaghlord wrote up a good piece on the IDW storyline and what order to read everything in. Really wish it had have been stickied.
As long as you read Infiltration first, followed by the Spotlights, Stormbringer and Escalation (in any order) then you should be fine, they all tie into one another very very well.
Megatron origins is also worth a read, but issue #3 (of 4) only comes out this week.

So for anyone that's just getting into the comics, would it be wise to just jump in? Or is that a bad move?

Well.. pretty much every series is part of the bigger story.. but it hink at this point, this is where it starts to get dirty and lots of action etc. i think everything up to now has been a lot of getting us familiar with what's up. so you could probably jump in and get a good story out of whats coming up next, then research what the other previosu series have been about

Jump in if you like the single issues.
Grabbing the Trade Paperbacks is well worth it.
Start now, and work backwards with getting the Trades, the series is not overly complicated yet, everything does tie in together, and it seems that upcoming issues are going to tie into pre-existing stories more than start brand spanking new stuff.
Awesomesauce; Use it, you know you want to.

You've got a lot more to lose by just ignoring the whole thing at this point.

You'll have a lot more fun if you go back and get the TPBs for Infiltration, Stormbringer, Spotlights, and Escalation and read them in that order.
Then see if you can score the spotlights for Soundwave, Kup, Galvatron and Prime.
Then you're about right up where we are, ready for Devastation.

I know, and it says "Expect Spoilers." I did not want to risk opening it as I haven't read them yet.

Briggs, how are the Dreamwave comics?
So I picked up the 3 TBPs avialalbe so far from Amazon. Seems like a great deal.
Dreamwave's stuff was pretty good, although their material was kind of on the fanwank side. It was getting interesting when the Quintessons and Unicron came into it, but then Dreamwave went out of business.
To be perfectly honest with though, I don't think you'll regret your purchases.

tfarchive.com has some comic reviews, all be it they seem to be a pretty negative bunch, but they are thorough.
As for Dreamweave, I thought it was pretty interesting. I liked Omega Supreme in the Dreamweave comics more then I do in IDW so far. There was a lot of bot speaking though sometimes, and a lot of made up techno-mumbo-jumbo that got a bit tiring. Jetfire went on and on and on for awhile in an issue or 2.. drove me nuts. Almost to much backstory sometimes.
I'm liking IDW more, but Dreamweave defenitely had some good stuff going. THeir G.I. Joe/Transformer series was a very different art style that I was not use to, and enjoyed very much. It's the series that got me back into TF books actually.
Of course, I can't remember everything, because I'm reading far to much at the same time.. lol..

Really need to get back to updating it, but it already has an overview of the G1 comics. I've tried to keep it pretty spoiler free and not deal with specific story points in too much detail.
