I think you'll find there were 4 seasons of Generation 1 plus an additional 3 Japanese series and Marvel, Dreamwave and IDW runs of comic book to support all of those characters. So yes I do own a number of those figures but only the one I feel accuratly represent the characters from those shows and comic books. Hence I don't have nerf supersoaker Megatron.

But Classics and Masterpiece and Alternators are not G1, they're just new interpretations of the characters loosely inspired by G1. :)

Masterpiece are closer to the G1 cartoon versions than the actual G1 toys were, if anything they have MORE character.

MP-03 has little in common with G1 SS imo. He's just MP Starscream, not MP G1 Starscream.

Uh, yeah, the MPs are loosely inspired...are you on crack? The MPs are a better representation of G1 than the actual G1 toys....

Anywho, Alex Kingdom, you are fast becoming my favourite and most hated poster. Favourite because your opinions and criticisms are mostly spot on. Most hjated, because you always seem to beat me to stating those opinions.

Argue 'til you're blue, but Movie SS IS a good toy. G1 is over. SS can be ANYTHING.

Yeah he can be an ugly pile of plane part that resembles a demented gorilla if he wants! Just dont expect people to like it or buy it.

This new design IMO is head and shouders above gorilla-scream, it's a departure from previous SS designs whilst being respectful of historic aethetics and personally or the original character. I dont care it its a good toy or not it looks like crap IMO.

I agree AK, and Bonger, I'm with you. The heads and faces. If they were consistent. But the movie and HASBRO folks stated there is no blue spandex/ruby quartz visor/Wolverine claws/Storm with white hair/Rogue with white stripe consistencies in Transformers for them to have to follow for the movie. According to them it has always been a different look... :-x

I like this Starscream. It looks like a fun new direction for the toy/cartoon line to go. Sure it is exaggerated, but I think this is fresh enough, but aesthetically similar enough to the ones I hold in such high esteem that it works for me.

Movie SS was not. The movie was cool, but the designs to me, are still very flawed.

Oh well.

Jay Leno had a child with Starscream. I hate it so much, awful looking, kinda retarded, sorry, doesn't get my stamp of approval. Well I don't have to buy it, :)

To chime in on the movie vs. animated discussion:

I can look at this new animated Starscream and recognize him as a seeker. I couldn't do that with the movie version.

How is it even possible that they thought a face like that would be cool? It is such a turnoff and it is such a shame because with a proper head it could have potential.
I'm also not liking the jetmode, but I'll admit it looks a lot better than the pics Hasbro showed at Botcon.

I think it looks cool, it's very much a caricature of G1 Starscream, the arrogant smirk and the cock-sure look definately suits the character IMO.

Ha ha ha I can write crap, ****, twat , wanker, moron, retard, slut and whore but the language filter removes a multi purpose word like c o c k because it might be used in an offensive way!

Certainly the face has all the features needed for a proper Starscream head, but it still looks all wrong to me. The face is ttttttoooooo lllllloooooonnnnnngggggg... And the painted lips don't help things any bit at all.
Oh, well. The steaming pile that is Animated is going to save me a LOT of money. And it's not like they're ever going to be on store shelves in my area anyway.

You know, I was thinking. Why reuse the same names and characters over and over if they do not want to maintain some type of consistency across the toy lines and shows.

If they want to make such radical alteratio9ns, why not name them something else? Then we would not have all these issues. After all BW worked with essentially no Megs, SS or Prime.

Isn't that the basis for the entire Transformers franchise? Hasbro/Takara have been happily reinventing the wheel for the last 10-15 years, if we keep buying it they will keep doing it. If you don't like seeing the same old characters redesigned over and over again your in the wrong hobby.

Bonger wrote:You know, I was thinking. Why reuse the same names and characters over and over if they do not want to maintain some type of consistency across the toy lines and shows.

Becuase with each line they start over with the same characters and storylines but for new audience, they adopt whatever style or gimmick is in vogue at the time and repackage the same old **** for another generation of kids. I'd love it if they returned to the creative apex of Beast Wars/Machinwes but alas I don't think that will ever happen. They're making way to much money the easy way for them to have to resort to rebooting the franchise like they did back then.

Holy crap this entire thread is one long bitchfest. You know, after first seeing the art direction for the new show I was really pretty angry at the direction they went with. After seeing the toy proto pics at Botcon, man I am so down for the toys. I like Screamer here. Sure the elogated face is a bit odd but it doesn't detract from the overall aesthetic for me. And folks, while we're all entitled to our separate opinions, no one and let me repeat, NO ONE, has to agree with you.

AK, I do no disagree with you. The financial benefits to doing the same old poop is abundantly obvious. However, at some point, I really wish Hasbro would take a stand and give their product true integrity. Maybe adopt google's internal slogan, "Don't be evil."

My main beef of late has been reusisng the original charecter names for a whole new product and just calling it a "reboot." Can they not find someone with a little bit of imagination to come up with some new characters? Then link it back to BW and G1 and we would all be sold on the toys and they storyline.

I wish they would take a page out of IDW's recent offerings. Finally, Transformers are being done the right way, or so it currently seems. I only hope that the IDWverse will one day be translated into anime. Maybe a set of anime movies?

Don't get me wrong. I think Hasbro did a fantastic engineering job on these figures. They look exactly like the cartoons and appear to transform seamlessly. Technically, these might end up beiong the most impressive TF toys ever.

It is the idea backing them that bothers me. New characters, a litte imagination, and attempting to historically connect the new stories to the old and I would be won over.

P.S. I'm still gonna end up buying a half dozen. ;-) The difference is, the right storyline and I would have bought them all, hook line and sinker.

I wasn't disagreeing with you either Bonger, just pointing out that so long as Transformers remains popular Hasbro will see no reason to change the 'winning' formular of rebooting the continuity every two or three years with the same characters rehashed for a new generation of kiddy winks.

However maybe TFA will break that cycle? They are plannig a second series after this one and there will be cameos from G1 characters, suggesting they may be planning a longer shelf life for this series and that it MIGHT have links with the original G1 continuity? I guess with the Movies going on they'll want something to fill the gaps between movies, one continuous line might do the job and give us fans what we've been asking for since Beast Machines finished? It's a long shot but here's hoping!

I'll raise my glass to that.

On a side note, I wonder if anyone has tossed around the idea of an adult oriented anime G1 TF set of movies? With the boom of anime over the last decade, I am surprised nothing like that surfaced.

I can't see Hasbro getting on board with that, it would involve putting in a lot of capital, research, development and creative input into something that in the US is a niche market. Takara on the other hand might be interested in the idea but unfortuantly as far as TFs are concerneed they're not wearing the trousers and probably haven't got the money to sink into it as a solo project.
