Official Political Discussion Thread

We are about thirty days out from the first votes being cast with in the United States Primary for President of the United States. For those who do not know, Primaries are the time of an election where various Parties, Republican and Democrat or even the Green Party, place out before the populace the best candidates they have to offer. They parade them out like prized cattle before the masses in hopes of choosing the best of the best to be thrown into the grinder known as the General Presidential Election.

It is a great time for potential candidates to introduce themselves to the small throngs of people with in the smaller states such as New Hampshire and Iowa. Allowing them to liteally press the flesh with potential voters and future constituants. Plus primaries can pump millions of dollars into state economies helping other people indirectly. But enough about the President aspect of the Primary season and on to all topics reguarding this process.

With in this thread, and ONLY this thread, I am opening up the board to discussion of political discussion... something that is sorely missing with in our society. What are some concerns you have regarding inititives being run for the Preliminary elections? Do you perfer a certain candidate over another and why? Who do you think will win or lose?

This is a thread for logical discussion, and EVERYONE is entitled and encouraged to speak their opinions with out being ragged upon. I don't want to see people going, "you're stupid for voting for Ron Paul, he's Libritarian..." or "Eww you're voting for Clinton, you must hate America." So please restrain your basic urges to flame people because they do not see eye to eye with you politically. Remember we are all humans and we all see things differently. Its what makes Politics fun, not to mention that if it is not understood and not discussed by the masses we the people are the ones that suffer for it.

Finally one last bit of detail for posting. In order to keep this particular thread as easy to read and follow as possible, please do everyone the favor and bold the title topic that you are responding to. For example if I am talking about the Democratic Race in California, I would bold Democractic Race in California, so everyone can follow along. In addition rules are the same here as they are everywhere else on the boards. If flaming goes down then punishment will be swift and severe. If people are causing trouble here PM myself or any other member of the staff for a quick remedy.

So now that the warnings and posting rules are in place, we open it up for global discussion.

I think at the moment I'd prefer Obama for President. Among other things, the President serves as the 'face' and 'voice' of our country in foreign affairs. I tend to regard him as the best man for the job in that regard, as he is eloquent and charismatic. Additionally, his stances on various moral issues are similar to mine, and as something of a figure head, it seems important that the president espouse the moral disposition of his constituents, even if he doesn't actually have the power to do anything about it.

On other aspects I'm undecided, but then, the populace tends to over-credit the power of the presidency in and of itself. You listen to debates and such where voters are allowed to ask questions, and often enough they ask about things that the presidency has only tenuous influence on.

Unfair and perhaps unwise as it may be, I'm deterred from supporting Hillary, because electing a former president's wife seems a lot like electing an former president's son. On the other hand, experience as The First Lady is probably more valuable than experience as the president's progeny.

I have to admit, part of me would just like to see the gender/race barrier for the office broken just so we can get it over with and put it behind us. I wouldn't advocate voting for someone on the basis of their genotype, but the historian in me would like to see that forward movement occur. Once we establish that a woman or a non-European can get elected, the parties will begin choosing their candidates from a larger pool, which would be a good thing.

Democratic Primary Discussion

Interesting reasons to be sure. For me I am more of a John Edwards kinda guy. He is one of the most qualified candidates when it comes domestic priorities. He was an active trial lawyer who frequently took companies to court for violating labor laws. He's done alot to fight poverty through out the US, and believe it or not I figure he'd be the best person to fix the slag storm our current economic situation is now finding itself in.

And his running mate well... BILL RICHARDSON Gov NM. With all do respect to every senator out there, but this guy is the real deal when it comes to International Relations. He has personally served as ambassador to various countries including Venesquela (yeah I can't spell) He would be our eyes and voice across the nation and world. Together these individuals would be the most qualified Dynamic Duo. I can honestly see them turning the country back around after their first term.

Well you have to look at it from a strategic stand point. Most 20 something voting citizens vote Democrat, as such, Colbert would be taking away precious votes from state very important to the election. If he was allowed to run as a democrat, it would have spelled the end of Hillary or Obama, or whoever candidate was running in said state.

There really seems to be nobody on either side that really peaks any interest in me voting for them.

I'm reminded of the South Park episode, usually you're only options are a Giant Douche or a Turd Sandwich.

About the only person I'd really consider voting for is Giuliani, but then again, his entire campaign seems to be centered around 9/11 so much, it makes you wonder how quickly a terrorist attack will happen to our country after Giuliani is elected to remind everyone about why he's the president.

Clinton, there is just something about her that seems down right evil.

For the whole Colbert thing. I would vote for him in a heartbeat if he was running. He brings a nice alternative perspective to politics. He, along with Jon Stewart, make politics fun. We need that.

Sure it may take away from much needed votes. But then how many people are going to write-in Colbert's name anyway?

It wouldn't be fair for the process to not allow some one to run, IF they were a serious candidate which Colbert was not. He's even said in a few interviews that it wasn't a serious candidacy... shame he would have been one slag of a good story. For the most part neither Clinton or Obama strike me as candidates that are actually doing this for the people of this country. I don't know why but it seems more to stroke their egos and to stick it to the Republicans more than to actually fix all that is wrong with our government. I mean Clinton is the sort that will always go with the flow while Obama isn't settling in an actual personal ideology.

Guess thats why I am going for John Edwards and Bill Richardson.

Trust me when I say Obama's your standard Chicago politician. We'll all be finding that out sooner or later. Though I don't like everything about him, it seems John McCaine is the only person in the top tier that hasn't soaked through all the way.
