Is there some reason why Optimus Prime and Soundwave look so similar? They both have similar looking buttons on their lower torsos, they both have a similar overall shape, both have a faceplate for a mouth, and their heads each have an overall similar shape.

Just generic design similaritys. Ala front of car chest, Face plate, visor, wheels hanging off legs, shoulder mounted guns, ect. DUH :-B

It just seems suspicious that OP has a play, stop, rewind, and fast forward buttons on his torso.

Their heads especially look similar I've noticed and thought about this as well. in the end, it doesn't matter.

i've noticed alot of the tf's can be broken into "races", i.e. the jazz/prowl mold, the optimus mold, the seeker mold(s), bumblebee/cliffjumper, ratchet/ironhide ect.

there are definate oddballs, but it works for a lot.

then you have others like wingspan/pounce who's bot modes look alike, but alt modes are vastly different.

I know it doesn't matter. Ultimately, nothing related to Transformers matters. It was just a question.

I think most G1 Transformers have a fairly similar blocky shape. I mean look at Megs, Blaster, etc., most Transformers are big clunky blocks. The list of similarities and molds can go on and on. The fact that Soundwave and Optimus may look the same are just one example.

I never considered the two to have any similarities other than the faceplats. (Which was always my favorite headsculpts) But I did notice Soundwave's head is almost exactly the Decpticon symbol.
