Optimus Prime - Attack of the 30' Idiot?

Postby Obi-Wan Kenobi » Thu Aug 02, 2007 7:35 pm

I was thinking, wonder if any of you were too. If it weren't for Bumblebee, Sam and Mekala would both be dead thanks to Optimus Prime dropping them from the bridge. And what was kick save attempt, considering he's made of metal can't see that feeling too good or helping either. Is he and idiot???

(note - this post is just for fun, don't take it literally, but it is an observation  )

IMO, the Autobots portrayed in the movie simply care for the survival of Mikaela, Sam and other humans. Whether Sam or Mikaela get freaking injured, or loose limbs, aslong as they live they're fine :P

I thought it was kinda funny how they bounced off of Prime's foot. Is that wrong?

I don't think even a robot would be able to think clearly in a situation that stressful. Yeah, that and I think he hoped they'd grab on.

I failed physics, but I wonder... Would the addition of lateral force have slowed their descent? Or did it alter their fall trajectory to where Bumblebee could make the save (Walter Payton, eat your heart out)?

I think the helicopter blades sucked them down to where they started to fall in the first place. And you know BB has some cool sensor stuff to be accurate. Hey...wouldn't a football game between these guys be cool? Like in the cartoon?

You are correct. The 'copter blades pulled the kids down, and Prime was hoping they'd grab onto his feet. It's a large foot, so you'd think they'd be able to hold on.

The only thing I can think is that maybe he thought it would sort of break their fall, and maybe they wouldnt splat. I thought the midfall kick was kinda weird too.

i think it was just an attempt to save them but it didnt work out for him, and that it was jsut luck that bumblebee came and grabbed them. if not that, then yee..jsut to break their fall so it slowed them a little.

Well, if you're gonna die, you should bounce off a robot's foot first. But he could let go with his feet, but not one arm? He should've taken on the choppers. That would've been fun! Like Ironhide said about taking out irritating humans: it's an option.

well, they were pretty much new to earth and didn't know of humans beforehand (I think). So maybe Prime just didn't think humans are not so durable.

Don't

Postby riogrande100 » Fri Aug 03, 2007 5:56 am

don't blame prime, the guys fell off, they couldn't hold onto prine, and considering the exhaust stack is something they could grab onto, they were pretty crap at doing that. they fell to make bumblebee look good!

It did make BB look good. Too bad his goodwill ended up with him in trouble. I know Optimus would never take on those helicopters, but maybe Ironhide would've...

His kick would have slowed their fall first by decelerating their fall.

The lateral motion wouldn't slow their decent. If you fire a bullet, it's still falling at 32ft/sec^2 or 9.82 m/sec^2 (lets forget about drag for now).

Another interesting thought on Prime's idiocy...why sacrifice himself by pushing the All-spark into his own chest when it's just as easy to kill Megatron by pushing it into his....hmmm???

Because they simply didn't know what the result of pushing the Allspark into anyones chest would be. It was hinted that the most likely scenario would be death. But it could have just as easily made him more powerful than ever. If the only option left is self sacrifice that is far better than the possibility of making your enemy more powerful.

Sam ultimately made the right decision. Or so it seems for now. But the idea was it could just have easily gone the other way and we could have had a Beast Wars Optimal Optimus situation instead.

I agree. In fact one of the points that we were discussing after the movie was, how did Sam know that it wouldn't supercharge Megatron and made him the most powerful robot ever?

To make the allspark's energy contact with a transformer spark, the chest of the transformer should be open, as Prime showed when explaining his sacrifice plan to the rest of the autobots. Prime didn't expected Megatron's chest to be open, but the air attack over him opened it probably. Sam realized this and took advantage.

Just going back to Prime's poor attemt at catching the kids, you can't be too hard on him.

I mean after all, Bumblebee's "save" wasn't exactly gentle either. He jumped, grabbed them, and rolled head over heels.
He could have EASILY crushed them both. Or at least given them whiplash...

I mean at least the TF's try to help, but they're just so big that they can't be careful all the time.

Exactly...
So we can be too hard on Optimus.
Any of the robots could very easily hurt the kids without meaning to.
