This was starscreams prototype design shown on ben procter's page (lead robot illustrator for the movie).
He says on the site "....it's interseting to note how 'g1 old school' they [prototype designs] are. Here you see the credit owed to jeff and michael [production designer and director respectively] for pushing the designs to a new and alien place."

eh, it's better than the final version, to be sure, but something about the proportions is just a little bit off. the wings would look better a bit lower down, imo, and the limbs, particularly the legs, look... odd, somehow, i can't quite put my finger on it. maybe it's the pose, i don't know. still, i would definitely have prefered a final design that was much more based on this concept than what we ended up getting.

I'm glad they went with the movie design and not this "friendly toy look from 20+ years ago"

Too plain, now that I have come to like the movie designs. Plus this makes him look skinny and weak.

It's too much like the cartoon.

the Movie designs made them look like alien robots, not metal people that are big.

The movie designs they ran with are better.

Yeah, I actually don't like that design... he looks too much like something out of Artificial Intelligence or I, Robot.

Or *gasp* even Bicentennial Man

Sureley they could have reached some kind of "middle ground". My biggest disappointment with the movie designs is that they were convoluted messes of metal. (I know, this argument has cropped up before.) Mostly that there were very few really distinct shapes to recognize. (Chest, head, etc...)

Yup, i dont like it. Movie design FTW! This original version sucks.

If you are gonna redesign transformers, then resdesign em. If you aint, then just sue the G1 designs. There is no middle ground, because you end up with atrocities like this. The two styles SIMPLY DONT WORK TOGETHER. So i am glad they stuck with the more realistic, updated version.

What disappointed me about starscream wasnt the design, but his character. Its probably because he didnt get much screen time, which didnt allow for us to see how much of a sneaky rat he really is.

That design looks like a female, to be honest. And I can't imagine how dull the transformation on it would have been.

Then again, movie Starscream is the only version of the character I've really liked.

The first time I've ever gone "BLEH!" from a Transformer.

No, this design is terrible. Give it classic StarScream colors, and it might be good for a CGI G1 series. But no, not for the movie.

Movie Designs FTW!

If that turned out to be movie starscream...I would have even lower of an opinion of him. I like the movie Screamer. He's very...starscreamer-ish. Very sinister despite the fact he had...two lines. lol.

The movie designs are quite nice. It's a shame more people aren't willing to give them more of a chance.

That thing looks like a KO abomination.

The movie designs actually move, emote, etc...can't accomplish that with G1-esque designs.

I agree. It's not bad looking, just not big-budget movie looking. He's not intimidating, he looks frail. Love or hate the movie Screamer(or the designs in general) it was intimidating, imposing, able to strike fear and awe. That's what a big-budget movie needs.

the only problem I had with the movie designs were some of the heads. They looked kind of bugish. it would have been nice to see megatron and starscreams g1 heads instead of the insect looking ones.

If that design was bulked up a little it would be light years better than the movie design. The Megatron design just plain rocks!!!

I laughed when I saw that picture.

I never liked Starscream in any incarnation, except now this movie one, now I am interested in his character. When watching the movie again, seeing him perched up atop that building, like a bird of prey, was awesome.

He is hardcore, and i was pissed and amazed at the same time when he was handing Ironhide his ass int he street fight. It was awesome to see him just standing there fendign them off and firing at ratchet.

And I definetly like his head better in motion. Goes for a few of the designs, like Frenzy, seeing hime moving and interacting really makes them look alot better then seeign a screeny of em

Lol, I am opposite of you, I think that Megatron is an embarrassment. I think he is a perfect example of what happens when you try and make a cartoon character look live action. you get shiny smooth ugly piece of crap.

But thats just my view, it's cool if you like it, just not for me!

Something looks odd about that image. The legs look too long, out of proportion. Then again it could be the pose.

Personally I like the movie design. His ALT mode is entirely dependent on the Jet he scanned, its a big sucker.. No mass shifting there.

The scene with him tailing in the F-22's is unreal, he's just hovering behind them, sizing them up.

Pass the beer nuts.....[/b]

Realize of course, this was a VERY early draft, void of fleshing out of the joints and the addition of details beyond initial shape.

Um, excuse me, but your position is not allowed here or on any other Transformers board.
You have to either say you liked the movie designs being different because a middle ground hybrid is impossible, OR, you wanted blocky robots of yesterday that turned into 8-track tape players and cars that were popular in the late 70's.

It's an undeniable fact that mixing some "new" into "old" NEVER makes a product better. Completely starting from scratch or never changing at all are your only acceptable stances to choose from.

Now you know.

I like the general style of the robot, but its too much of a jet with bits of robot stuck on. Kind of the reverse of what I like in a TF, a robot with identifiable bits of vehicle stuck on. A compromise between this and the finished product would be nice, but between the two, the final design is better.
