Removing decals-Hurry in respose-PLEASE!

Postby Uniprimus » Sun Sep 16, 2007 4:50 pm

Ok, so here is the deal, in a few hours a used but in great condition G1 figure ends. It has stickers on it that I would remove to make it more cartoon/comic accurate. Is there a safe way t do this without damaging the figure? Please hurry in response!

Yes.

1st. Order replacement labels from repro labels.

2nd. Remove the old labels. Try soap and water with a gentle brush to remove the residue (soft bristle tooth brush is fine).

3rd. Try rubbing alcohol and a q-tip (just be careful around painted parts) if the soap and water does not work.

4th. Try the orange adhesive remover (found in all major stores). Works well if #2 and #3 don't.

5th. Apply those new repro labels!

Mine is the generic form, just caled "Adhesive Remover".

Be careful of Goo Gone 2. I think that can remove paint.

Oh yes.

They are the best resource to collectors who buy loose figures to fixup.

I have spent so much money at Reprolabels, it's scary.

I just did a beat-up G2 black Optimus Prime trailer in G1 Reprolabels, it looks like brand new now. Looks real slick.

I find peeling the stickers off with tweezers works well, then removing any left over sticker and adhesive with nail polish remover and a Q-tip works best.

Soap and water works very well on paper stickers, but not good at all on plastic coated or reflective backed stickers.
Awesomesauce; Use it, you know you want to.

The labels would be printed on a chrome background. They look good!

Watch out for nail polish remover, it tends to eat through the plastic if it sits too long.

Butter and turpentine worked for me. =) Even on chromy Meg!

Course everything damages the chrome a lil.. Speshully
rubbing! I forget if mine got worn a bit in the middle of
the chest but it was covered by the new sticker!

There must be differences in the glue.. some wipe off easy
while nothing works on others... like Runabout and Runamuck!
That glue had just petrified into stubborn rocky lumps!
So I had to polish both cars good!

Reprolables got me back on collecting when there finally was
a chance to make my old set of worn buggerbots look like new!

They don't sell everything...yet... but take requests! =)

I need Triggercon Ruckus and Sparkabot-set next!

It should not but you should go really slow. If you can soften the decal with water first would be helpful, but it has to be a careful process. Dab the water onto the decal rather than soak the whole part in, in other words.

I find it really helps if you are able to actually detach the part of the toy from the rest of it. That way you can manouevre more easily. Where I have really screwed up is I tried to get at a label at an akward angle, and actually scratched or scuffed the shiny bits because of it.

Worse comees to worst, the replacement decal should hide any blemish.

Rather than make a new thread, I'll join in here:

If you use water on a G1 guy (Blitzwing) will having the figure in water while you rub off the decals not make the metal start to rust?

Short answer: Goo Gone.

Sticers, price labels, w/e. A little goo gone and it will come right off no worries.

I recently redeco'd my G1 Sideswipe with a set from Reprolabels. I took off the old nasty stickers with a Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol, it worked very well except for the spots that were painted over clear plastic. For that I'd recommend soapy water and a paper towel.

And the quality of the Reprolabels was very good, I'll try to get pics up some time.

can the rub signs be just as easily removed? they always tend to be crooked.

What I've done with mine with some success is to apply onto the decal. It's a damn slow process, but what I do is apply to soften and then slowly peel. I don't stop until it's off, and after that wipe the water clean off. I then put in my dry cabinet with selica gel. Seems to work. I think the reaction that creates rust will take different times depending on the metal, but so far so good.

Another thing that works to get stickers and residue off of anything is lighter fluid... it dissolves the residue instantly. So far I've found it's safe on plastic as long as you only use a small amount (just a drop on a tissue will usually do). I would hesitate to use it on painted areas however, I don't know how well the paint would hold up. Chrome should be fine I would think, but do so at your own risk.
