Rescue Ratchet...not bad. Not bad at all.

Postby mpchi » Sun Sep 09, 2007 5:23 pm

While failed miserably finding this guy locally, I managed to snatch one on ebay at original price plus shipping. Added a rough dirt wash, this Rescue Ratchet turned out pretty sweet. In terms of the figure, its a great voyager class design. No tricky bits on transformation and easy to remember. The robot while pretty chunky, is very poseable. I was skeptical when people mentioned this, but I finally see it for myself. He can pose very well, and excellent balance in moderate poses. The cockpit is a bit flimpsy in vehicle mode, but not super bad. Another good one from the TF Movie bunch.

However, when it comes to QC, man...its terrible on the one I got. Both upper arm swivel is super loose. Loose right hip joint, as well as right knee. That knee doesn't even ratchet like the left. Also half of the rear bumper piece is also very loose. Seems like there is a lot of issue in parts fitment. Not to mentioned a badly glued rear mirror on one side. Thanks Hasbro. Great work right there! Luckily, almost all those pieces can be easily disassembled and fixed. Now its a lot more solid. So bottom line, great figure, bad QC.

Looks good. Sorry to hear about the loose joints, though. So far I've got a Jazz with a floppy arm, a FAB Frenzy with a loose hip, and a Starscream with a misaligned cog that means the rotating launcher gimmick gets jammed against the wing on one side. Looks like Hasbro may have found their glass ceiling for large production runs.

Anyway, as I say it looks like a very nice figure. Did you apply the black wash yourself?

The black wash (dark grey actually) is a diluted flat enamel paint wash to give it a dirty/weathered look and pops some details on the sculpt. Easy stuff anyone can do. Its pretty rough still, as I didn't have time to do it in a more refine fashion. Might do a 2nd pass on this later on, and add some silver highlights to make it more metal-like. Have been painting all my movie figures in similar fashion.

nice wash, and nice kick, although personally, im very shallow when it comes to faces. If it doesnt have a pretty face, it doesn't work. except concept bb.

oh and yeah my bb has a crazy loose hip, but it doesnt interfere with posability..yet :-?

Though I prefer the movie paint job, he looks pretty cool. The 'AMBULANCE' on the front should've been in mirror writing though. I love the wash on this guy. I'm working on a similar wash for Galaxy Force Vector Prime (the gold repaint) and can only hope it turns out as good as yours.

I have the original yellow version, and yeah the roof isn't exactly locked in place. The joints are pretty stiff on mine, maybe the mould got degraded for the new repaint run.

Anyway, I think its one of the better moulds of the movie line.

Even with the dirt wash, the doors are still a very bright shade of white.

Seems Hasbro is only repainting figures for the movie line, not even bothering with trying to fix the multitude of QC issues they have had.

Not that it matters, I'll be pouncing on this figure as soon as I see him in retail.

I have seen this guy left and right where I live. Same with Thundercracker. I picked him up, but I sent him on his way to someone who wanted him a lot, lot more than I did. I haven't been overly impressed with the movie line, anyway. Though a few figures are pretty awesome. Good job with your Ratchet, btw!

Thanks. A watered down grey. Mixed black with some earth tone brown. Black would probably too contrasty for it, since this guy is white.

Sure thing. I saw Thundercracker at both a Target and a Walmart by my house. I've also seen Rescue Ratchet in two different places. On Thursday I went to Walmart and these were the only two TFs they had! They weren't moving! I even saw Thundercracker in a display in the middle of the aisle and nobody wanted him. So they are yours.

A deluxe Bumblebee can almost trade anything nowadays. :D Too bad this is the only Rescue Ratchet I can get my hands on. I would trade you if I have an extra. But ask around. You never know.

I've seen nothing but Leader Primes and 20th Anniv Primes here in SoCal this past week as well, so no, it's not just Tenn that doesn't want them. No Deluxes at all, save for a stray Wreckage or two at Kohl's.

I haven't seen a Deluxe in quite some time. I saw a Bonecrusher a while back, but not much since. And I haven't seen a Barricade or a 74 BB since I bought the only pack I ever saw a few months ago. I found a cache of Leader Primes at my PX but nowhere else. Now I'm having fun with Alternators and Classics, cause that's all I'm finding.

Huge favor to ask-could you PM me or post a couple of tips here and let me know some of the details of your wash process. It looks great-as does your others you've posted. I'm about to give it a try but couldn't find much about the details: the process as far as application, dry time, what you're using to rub off the excess, etc. I'm dying to give this a try.

I picked up a Rescue Ratchet the other day, but traded it for the green hummer version a friend had. Someone said "He looks like a nurse" and I could not get that out of my head when looking at him.

Your wash makes him look 900% better. Good job!

I really want the Rescue Ratchet. Please please please tell me he is not an exclusive. Please.

I really want Thundercracker too. We just don't get Transformers here often. I think there's an embargo to the island on which I live. (Yes I live in the US)

I tried to buy a movie Thundercracker on e-Bay a few weeks ago and then realized after that it was a pre-order due to ship sometime in September. NOTE: Never, ever buy Transformers on e-Bay at 4 AM.

Great job on the wash! His details really stand out now!

You can find some details on my process on my other "Rise! Leader Class Rise!!!" thread. In terms of application, just mix your enamel paint (about 1 part paint, 2 parts thinner) with some small dish or container, grab a cheap small size brush and dip them into areas you want the details to pop filled with details and panel lines, like the lower arm of Ratchet, and his lower leg side panel. If you want the guy look more weathered and dirty, then apply a little bit of paint pretty much everywhere by brushing on a thin layer, including inside joints and armpits and whatnot. The paint should be very see-through, otherwise, its too thick. Enamels dries pretty fast when its this thin. Usually dries in like 10-15 mins. Then use a Q-tip, dip a little thinner and smudge off excessive paint. Use some small pieces of paper towel too for bigger areas. Make sure you don't dip too much thinner on the Q-tip, otherwise you'll wipe off more paint than you want. Once you went over the whole guy, let dry. You can use some grey/black fine tip Gundam Markers to draw in panel lines you missed or accidentally wiped out, but its optional. You can always give the paint another pass for areas you didn't like as much. When its all done and dried, then add silver paint marker highlights by drawing on edges and details very lightly. Just add a little bit like how you would see painted metal parts in real life got paint chips on the edges and corners. Use your finger to smear it a little when necessary to get a nice fading edge. Messy fingers you'll get, but you can just wash it off later. Just make sure not to add silver fingerprints on your figure. :P

Enamel paints are very forgiving, as you can clean them off good and redo any areas you are not happy with. But its also this nature that let them not stick too well on plastic compare to acrylic model paint. So the dirt weathering you added can rub off slowly as you handle the figure and transform it more. Paints with metallic flakes like silver, gold, bronze..etc. tends to rub off too, even if they are not enamel base. In some case, with figures that have big clean areas you can hold and grab, this is not a big issue. But if its unavoidable and you want to keep the weathering exactly how it is, you need to seal it with a clear coat on top, after all the painting is done at the end. I use Model Master Lacquer Overcoat Semi-gloss clear spray can. Works very well, though cost $5 for a small can that only last a figure or two. You can find these in some local model or hobby shops. I get very good results with this and no bubbling. When you spray, keep a good distance around a feet from the figure. Start spraying away from the figure first, then slowly move in while keep the spraying going. Do not stop your arm movement nor the spraying in the middle. Keep the arm movement and spraying going, and slowly moving back and forth around different parts of the figure. It should minimize bubbling and give it a nice even coat. Semi-gloss matches the dirt & plastic well. But if you want to make it more car-like with a shiny finish, you can use glossy or even ultra glossy. Just don't make the robot too dirty on the weathering, as shiny dirt may look kind of weird. This brand of clear coat usually dries in an hour to touch, and completely dry in a few more hours.

Thats about it. Easy enough, and nothing very fancy. But a good efficient process for us collectors that are not too skilled on doing a complete custom job (disassembling, masking, priming, airbrushing...etc.), but still able to improve the look of these toys to an extend. Hope it answers some of your questions.
