Rise of the pretenders
Has anyone seen this transformers series? It has a human named Hawk who claims to be a transformer and claims they can turn into any living being. He turns into a robot and then transforms into a jet.

The series you are refering to is Masterforce... All (well, most of) the TFs in this series are controlled by/or can change into humans or demons...
The begining of the series has 4 Cybertron Prentenders vs 3 Destron Prentenders.. The Pretenders are TFs that can change or Pretend to be other living creaters (humans in the case of the Cybertrons and demons in the case of the Destrons)..
Later, using Pretender technology, Humans are chosen to become Headmaster Jr (both Cybertron and Destron)..
The series focuses on finding all the "God Masters" and "Transcectors"..
Jinrai (the westren toy known as Powermaster Optimus Prime) is from this series..
IMO the series kinda feels like Power Rangers.. A UK company as released a DVD of this series, there also is a complete FanSub of this series avail on the web as well..

Even the director admitted that if you removed the faction symbols there would be pretty much nothing to identify it as Transformers. It's a good giant robot show, but it's not really a Transformers show.

Hmm, didn't know that. But the difference in style is what I feel makes it the most memorable and unique. It also makes sense, taking the desguise angle to a whole new level, and having the Transformer characters actually able to intereact with normal people in regular situations is a neat idea.
Hey, what if they made a live-action series based on Masterforce? That'd be a neat idea.
But anyway, it's also the only Transformer series where the Cons outnumber the Bots overall, and this is going on a figure-by-figure basis, without factoring in cloning.
And there were only three Decepticon Pretneders, btw.

Masterforce, while is a good little series in it's own right, is my least favourite of the Takara collection. It doesn't feel like tf's like the other two do.

They did. Power Rangers.

I really don't see much of the "Power Ranger" connection. Power Rangers was more about guys and gals morphing into spanadex and fighting a monster of the week than turning into a part and combining with a giant robot to fight a known enemy. And none of the Decepticons ever grew humoungous either. Also recall that they rarely fought in their Pretender forms.

The 1 Giant Robot=6 smaller robots, plus Black Zarak, plus Browning(as I said, figure by figure basis), and the Firecons. They appear very briefly, but they count.
The Bots have another two giant robots(Godbomber and Grand Maximus), as well as Quickswitch. Doubledealer was on both sides.

actually i was taliking about black zarak, i'd forgotten about the seacons!
and i'd included grand maximus, as he's a pretender/headmaster/giant bot!

They only used three of the Decepticon Pretender for the series. The ones called Skullgrin, Bomburst and Submarauder in the US. They and the Seacons are the initial villians of the series, with more non-Pretender characters added later. Oddly the Seacons were like the Terrorcons in Energon - numerous near-mindless cannonfodder. Only Snaptrap was unique and a full character in the series. The rest were just drones.

I feel that the real transformers (especially on the Autobot side) were sidelined in favour of the Head/godmasters, with the focus on these characters to me it didn't seem all that different from any show that had humans controlling giant robots. Also they made the Tfs a bit too human I mean one of them dates for gods sake, what does a giant alien robot whos species reproduces asexually see in human women? I honestly believe that the director had a mecha anime plot in his head, and then just hijacked the transformers franchise as a vessel to give it life.

I swear he had a drink problem. Just because GodGinrai had been able to turn Blackzarak away from the Earth, despite suffering horrific damage and needing the help of Little Maximus, he calls for champaign all round. The battle wasn't even over and he wanted a drink!
