Is this figure any good? I know it would never beat the original but how is articulation/durability/coolness? Is there anything it does better than the original? And are there any differences when buying it in a gift set as opposed to buying the figures seperately?

I heard it ain't too great, ad that the original is much better.

You can get a 3 dollar version from Family Dollar.
The quality won't be the same but should give you
something to base a further decision. And for
3 dollars you can't go wrong.

I had a love/hate for Star Sabre. For starters, they could have gave him more articulation, and made the toy bigger than the rest. Some of the detail was less than the non transformable version. I suggest you get him only if you get Victory leo.

Victory Leo is nice, kinda like having a smaller version of the original

Over all its a great figure (the original Robot Master) problem is, his saber handle breaks easily.

The saber handle on mine broke the day I got it. I reattached it with super glue, but I only let him hold the "small" handle now.

It's one of those "it could have been so much better" toys. it COULD have had bendable knees and legs. It COULD have had wrists. He coulda had ankles. He coulda been a modern interpretation of a classic character. But he has none of those things and he isn't.

It's like a cheaper, smaller, less detailed G1 figure, really. It's about as posable as the G1 Star Saber ... only marginally better in those terms. His connections to Victory Leo aren't all that secure. In fact, I don't really think it looks too great overall.

Victory Leo also is like a small G1 figure with no articulation save for the shoulders. Since I have no connection to Vic Leo as a character, I'm kinda dissappointed.

Which isn't to say it's a total loss. His "brainmaster" is neat. And the fact that he's a little more in-scale with other figures is a plus. But, overall, he's a must only if you want a version of the G1 character in your collection (as I did). If you want a guy to stand around facing forward in your collection, then Star Saber will not dissappoint! Of course if you ned him to be in any battle pose .... or a pose at all, you're outta luck.

Edit: It's a good idea to think of this as a sort of "pre-classics" toy. Same concept, but with a more simple mindset.

Plastic quality on the Robot Masters line was never too great, I've had the common snapage problem with the end of the sword handle on Star Sabre and a former housemate managed to snap one of Starscreams tail wings off at the ball joint (fortunately we've had the better designed Classics 'screamer since).

As for differences between the individually packed and two pack versions, the only variation is the weapons. They have a matt finish on the original releases and a metallic finish on the two pack.
