No, the user name was in the description of the item. Maybe the auction was a deal setup between the seller and buyer beforehand instead of a special type of auction.

Some auctions you are required to get on the sellers bidders list, you have to ask for permission to bid on the item..I've seen this a handful of times give or take but typically this is a high end auction where thousands of dollars or tens of thousands are at risk.
The sellers probably do it to make it look like there items are more prestigious and collectible.
How much was the item in question going for ?
