So, If Not Bay, Then Who?

Postby QuietStorm » Tue Aug 21, 2007 11:00 am

With the recent internet tantrum that Michael Bay has released, and his news that he's no longer interested as TF2 Director, who would you get to direct another Summer Blockbuster Giant F'in Robot movie?

Names that come to my mind:
-James Cameron
-John Woo
-Wachowski Brothers
-Brian De Palma
-J.J. Abrams

Word.

It's a response like this that completely ruins a thread's credibility. Neither you, nor I, or any other fans for that matter could actually make Transformers 2.

Goodness.

This is gonna take a lot of thinking, I'm thinking either Len Wiseman or Sam Raimi, or maybe Steven Spielberg, this is a decision Paramount has to think about very, very carefully, (if they have the mental capacity to think!)

James Cameron
Ridley Scott
Steven Spielberg

Maybe with no Bay, Spielberg would decide to give it a go.

Actually, I'm sure there are many more amateur filmmakers on this bored than just me, It could be possible for a few of them living near to each other to band together, create some ideas & ask Hasbro, Paramount, & their fellow Seibertronians of course to support them. It would be difficult, but I wouldn't completely discredit the idea. Besides, you never know if someone on the bored hasn't already created a blockbuster film, we may even have the likes of Coppola, Speilberg or even Bay just a PM away.
Never dismiss an idea just because it seems unfeasible at first.
Just because some of us are only amateur film makers or not even started, doesn't mean others aren't already professionals.

That has to be the sillyest list of directors for a TF movie EVER!

Ok, James Cameron: Yes. But it wont ever happen.

John Woo: No. For one he has no idea how to direct a sci-fi movie, and although the action scenes will be great, plot and design will be weak. He simply doesnt have the type of vision required for such a large Sci-fi movie such as TF2.

Wachowski Brothers however would be my first choice, but again it wont happen as they are already busy with their own live action version of Speed Racer.

Brian De Palma?: WTF are you thinking?! He doesnt direct Sci-Fi action movies! He directs oscar winning crime epics!

J.J.Abrams? No....MI:3 was good, This mysterious other movie he is making looks interesting but again, he doesnt have the right track record or the vision required for a tf movie.

It has to come down to: Wachowskis, Cameron, Spielberg, Bay (i know he is out of the running but id still choose him) Christopher Nolan, Luc Besson or Gore Verbinski or ME.

Nolan's a great director but he would never ever touch Transformers, since he looks down on CGI.

I think Whedon would be Prime for this. The Wachowski brothers are good at sci-fi but I think they're a bit too dark for Transformers (not that I dislike darkness in my TF--but Paramount and Hasbro want to keep these films safe for the new generation of TF fans too).

Whedon would be good.

Cameron's too much into the story. And yes, you can focus too much on the story and forget about everything else.

Spielberg would 20th Anniversary ET-ify it.

Woo would definitely have action, action, action...but I'm still not sure he'd be capable of tackling it.

The Wachowskis (no longer brothers, but brother and sister...long story...) could do it, but I'd be constantly reminded of The Matrix trilogy and for me, which I don't know if that would be a good thing or not.

....if I had to choose, I'd probably go with the Wachowskis. They actually can balance story and action and make a good movie. (The first Matrix is proof of that.)

James Cameron
Ridley Scott
Steven Spielberg
Peter Jackson

After seeing The Bourne Ultimatum, I would love to see Paul Greengrass have a go.

Spielberg would be nice. However, he has two huge projects on his plate right now (Lincoln, and Interstellar). Something tells me that TF2 would have to play third fiddle, and it would either be something that didn't have his full attention, or it wouldn't get a release until after 2009, or both.

My picks, annotated:
1) Roland Emmerich - directed Independence Day and Day After Tomorrow, which proves that he can make a movie at least look good, whether he has a good script (ID4) or not.

2) Len Wiseman - one of the best movies I've seen all summer was Live Free / Die Hard. It was an absolute cartoon of a movie, but it was one hell of a ride. I saw this the day before the first time I saw TF, and I was sort of let down by TF's comparative lack of action. I haven't seen either of the Underworld movies, but I think this guy might be dangerous with a nine-figure budget.

3) Garth Jennings - Did the '05 version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which was a superb, imaginative and faithful recasting of the novel. Note the three adjectives from that last sentence and how important all three of them are to TF fans.

4) Alfonso Cuarón - Children of Men is one of my favorite dystopian movies of all time. If the scripts head in that direction, this guy would be my first choice in a heartbeat.

I can also get behind Bigbot's vote for Paul Greengrass.

(Of course, all of this might be moot... I just noticed the new news item about Bay over in the sidebar as I was previewing this post.)

I love the idea of Cuaron handling this movie. After all, he also did Prisoner of Azkaban, which was the best of the Potters.

The more I think about it, though, the more I just love the idea of Edgar Wright(Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) directing TF2. True, his work's been mostly in comedy, but Hot Fuzz(which he also co-wrote) was one of the most tightly plotted and entertaining movies I've seen in a long time. And hiring guys with experience in quirky, comedic films has worked well for blockbusters in the past(Gore Verbinski, Peter Jackson and, to a lesser extent, Sam Raimi all had this sort of a background).

I'd love to see Verbinski handle it, but I doubt he'd take on another epic film, especially with talk of a Pirates 4 always hanging in the air.
