I though the movie was going to be good early on, but like C+ or B- good. Also I thought the general public wouldn't get onboard and fuel the hype. I'm glad to say after seeing it I was wrong on both points.
The movie is a A-, B+ at worst and people are going nuts over it. And not just those who grew up watching it in the 80's but later generations including the current one as well.
I'm also plesently surprise that this movie had some really good humor in it. The character of Sam I thought was awesome, and even his parents made me laugh a lot too. People dreaded when they heard such things as Brunie Mack having a cameo (myself included as I think his sitcom sucks) but his part was short, to the point, and funny.
Overall while action played a big part in this film, I glad it wasn't ALL about big explosions and special effects. I actually thought there was good writing in this movie which I wasn't really counting on.
I also like that while it was light harted and goofy at times (The FBI raiding the hackers house, Optimus steping on the fountain, scenes with Frenzy and his crazy talk) it wasn't "little kid" goofy. In other words, I like how they treated the movie as if knowing that childhood Transformer fans had grown up as adults instead of treating them as if they were still little kids that wanted a live action rehash of the animated film.
The only thing's I'm dissappointed with are...
1) What the hell is Bay's problem with cops or law enforcement thats NOT the Army. We all know he's buddy buddy with the arm forces, but after watching this and his protrayal of first the police officers that question Sam about his car and then the S7 guys, Bay obviously has no love for law enforcement... Maybe one to many speeding tickets who knows but his patrayals of them seem over the top negative. Seriously Sam going to go for your gun over breaking an entering? Come on, ugh... not to mention suggesting that when his father is RIGHT there, please...
2) Decepticons got the shaft. Besides Barricade, Frenzy, and Magatron all the other decepticons were pretty forgetable. Ok Blackout was a bad ass in the begining, but no dialog. Bonecrusher and Devestator we didn't even see until the end and while I know plot wise they would draw too much attention as military vehicles driving around in LA, Bonecrusher seemed nothing more than an excuse for Prime to be a badass and gut him with his sword. Brawl/Devestator's role was nothing more than to distract the humans so that Megs and Prime could have they're duel. Then Blackout comes back just be the humans first kill... I'd just would've like at least to have some real dialog go between the autobots and decepticons during the last battle so that the decepticons could show some character at least. Starscream was the biggest disappointment. He ACTED like the badass fighter jet that he is, but still there's that lack of dialog. He could've at least throw some witty remarks out there when he downed the F-22's or SOMETHING...
Overall most of the decepticons where nothing more than name holders in my opinion and its kinda a shame.
3) BAY PLEASE HOLD OFF WITH THE ZOOM FUNCTION IN THE NEXT MOVIE. Maybe becuase its hard to capture both a 6ft human and a 20 ft+ robot in the same frame but with some of the fight scenes I had no clue what was going on as the camera is so zoomed in all you see is sam, then bumblebee's and barricades arms moving around fast. Many scenes appeared as nothing more than a mechanical mess at times and I was left confused.
But with all said, this still was a great movie. Not perfect, but the first ones hardly ever are. I think this movie is going to turn out to be the next Spider-Man one. It'll get people interested in the franchise, make lots of money meaning more things can be done in the next film and done better, and pave the way for even better Transformer 2, just like Spidey 2 was to 1.
Favroite scenes:
When Blackout destroyed the Army Base. It happens very early in the movie and sets the tone for the rest of the film. It's during this part that you know this film is going to be rediculous (but in a good way)...
When Mikaela insults Bumblebee for being a crappy old Camero, who then throws her and sam out, just to show off by driving on two wheels and later taket he image of the new camero, all to that Kill Bill song, lol...
When Bumblebee take Sam and Mikaela to the spot where the Autobots are enter Earths atmospere. The music during this part was key, it was beautiful and I got a little choke up as for a split second, I actually felt as if the Prime, Ratchet, Jazz, and Ironhide were actually real beings coming to Earth. Very nicely done.
