Superman Doomsday *SPOILERS*

Postby Cyber Bishop » Tue Sep 18, 2007 8:01 pm

Motto: "Ker-Klick... Choom!"
Weapon: Black Magic
The direct to video movie adaptation of "Superman vs Doomsday" was released today..
Anyone else pick it up?

**SPOILERS PRESENT**

I have to say that I really enjoyed it.
Some things..

The Supes Doomsday fight was too short.
The clone idea was a good one (not like the superboy clone in the comics)
I was hoping for some Justice league involvement, the 4 supermen and maybe the coast city subplot and Mongul.

All in all it was a "very loose" adaptation of the Death of superman comic story arc.

Anyone else pick it up today?
Not a sheeple.

So for someone who's missed the comics, should I seek them out or simply watch this adaption (yes I realise the better option would be to do both :P )

I don't think they could do a Mongul/Cast City subpolt

Remember that was Hal Jordans territory and the JLU had Jon Stewart and Hal Jordan didn't exist here

If they had Hal his going insane would of made a great sequel

I got to pick this DVD up

How did Adam Baldwin do as Superman?

I have a pretty hard time imagining Jayne Cobb as the Man of Steel, but I thought the same thing about Crispin Freeman.

This movie is not set in the JLU or other animated universe. It is set on its own.

Correct. This is not a Timmverse animated flick. Like all the forthcoming DC Direct to DvD animated films, it exists in it's own universe.

Personally... while I liked it, I cannot for the life of me understand why they altered so much from the comics. I had thought, and this new foray into DvD animated films was marketed as, being faithful adaptations of those classic comic stories that would probably never be able to be made into movies. That being the case, I believe that Superman Doomsday SHOULD have just been Death and Return... only animated.

The skipping over of Coast City actually really sucked for me, as I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, they'd use that as a jump off point for a future Emerald Twilight animated movie. Hal Jordan's a character that's gone far too little screen time of late, yet he's perhaps one of the most popular characters in the DCU ( especially with the current Sinestro Corps storyline ). Emerald Twilight would have made an AWESOME freakin' animated movie.

Superman/Doomsday's voice acting was pretty okay. I didn't mind Baldwin, but I really missed Dana Delaney. Missed the most, however, was definitely Clancy Brown. His Luthor voice was always spot on for me.

I was looking forward to the upcoming New Frontier animated movie but now I'm a bit more guarded. More importantly, rumor had it that both Kingdom Come and Dark Knight Returns were/are on the slate for getting the animated treatment and I was overjoyed to hear it. However, if they're not going to stick to the comics, they might as well not even do them. Both stories are far too great and classic for them to start fiddling with. Next, they'd start thinking about doing an animated treatment for Identity Crisis and I'd die a little more inside.

Final Review: Great if you've never read, are not a fan of, or never intend to read Death and Return of Superman. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and just pick up the newly recollected issues.

And I said I WAS HOPING for some Justice league involvement.
Um.. As far as Hal not existing in the JLU universe you are incorrect, go through and re-watch JLU because Hal does briefly show up and so does Kyle.
I was not aware before I picked up the movie that it was in it's own "universe" and that is why I was hoping for other DC heroes involvement.

Hal shows up as part of a time-travel episode - Stewart briefly transforms into him when reality warps.

I had read the original series back when it was being released and I was still in my superman phase. I was really hoping to see the cyborg superman in action, and I was disappointed that he wasn't there.

Overall, it was a good story, but far from what the original arc meant to the general comic book reader.

Indeed. The Cyborg Superman is an amazingly cool character. If you've not been following DC at all, he's becoming even more interesting a character these days since he's joined the Sinestro Corps. I've been waiting for DC to start getting some cool villains again and they've finally got some ( well, except for you Black Adam. You've been cool for awhile now ).

Sadly, I actually really missed the other Supermen too... even Steel.

While i do agree that an awful lot was changed from the comics, i think it did a fantastic job of collecting all three stories in an hour an twenty minutes.
It still had the emotional impact when he bit the dust, and the fight scenes seriously kicked ass!
While i was a little disappointed that the fight with the JLI at the start wasn't included, you've gotta respect the fact that certain ommisions have to be made when turning something like this into a film!
That bit where Superman grabbed Doomsday's mouth and flung him through a building, Woah!!! I don't know what it is, but i love watching superman let rip on someone.
It seemed more causal Superman fan friendly then the books did too!
I really hope they do a Kingdom Come one, in exactly the same style as the book, That'd rock so hard.

That doesnt matter.......He already existed in the JLU universe.....that is if its the same universe as the Superman and Batman animated universe. In the episode of Superman animated series, where they introduce Kyle as Green Lantern ,durring the fight with Sinestro ether Kyle or Supe's is trowen into a jet fighter plane....under the cockpit you see the name Hal Jorden signed on the jet, indecating that was his jet. That meens he existed in that universe.
