The Best Megatron to buy and Review Thread

Postby skywarp-2 » Fri May 04, 2007 9:43 am

I started this review on another thread, and the subject became which Megatron was the best buy. I have compiled some links to the gallery section of seibertron to give an example of which Megatron's I consider the best buys from each series, the scale is from one being the best and anything after being the later choices, not necessarily bad mind you, but just choices of figures that are less likely to be purchased by me.

The Thumbs up and hearts are the best and a definate buy..

The less thumbs up the less I would recommend as a buy..
If your not rich, and I'm not, I would pick which ones you consider the best representation of your favorite figure and seek them out on the secondary markets..that way you don't go broke.

What is your take on the Megatron's released thus far?

Which one would you like to find and buy that you are missing?

Who is your overall favorite?

I've been accused of always writing a novel, so I'm sure this little endeavor will only strengthen that point of view, but i don't care.. :P its a great subject to exploit since there is so much debate about Megatron since the Master Piece/classics was released..

But if I'm to atleast give an idea of what I consider the best Megatron, i will have to break them down into series, and for that to be a proper assessment of the different versions, because Megatron in Beast Wars is completely different in concept then the one in Generation One, and vice versa. Just like the Armada/Energon/cybertron Megatron is different from the G-1 and Beast Wars versions..

I'm linking choice images through the seibertron gallery for reference if you forgot what each bot looked like..Or are just new to the Hobby all together..in which case welcome!

In Generation One:
1. MP Megatron (he is the best representation of the original cartoon design to date, he has great articulation, and is complex enough to make him worth the buy. Not to mention the sheer size and the accompanying extras. He is a bit expensive, and is not for Children to play with for he is a bit breakable, but he is a Masterpiece, and as such meant as a collectors item for G-1 enthusiasts.)
BotMode:

AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=47
Revised: MP Megatron is the most faithful... :x ;)^ ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

2. Reissue Megatron (nice to have the original back, he's a pure work of nostalgia, and is why he is 2nd in my list, and that is saying alot, because his Bot mode wasn't all that and really had a lot of work that the MP version corrected.. so he would be 2nd in my book because even though his Bot mode is outdated, he is still the closest thing to the Orginial cartoon designed Megatron, which even Beast Wars hailed as the best version.)
REVISED:Reissue is the next closest thing to the Original Gun design/ cartoon Megatron.. ;)^ ;)^

AltMode:

3.Megatron G-1 Classics Deluxe ( I would have to choose this version over the Megatron Classics Megatron "Nerf" Gun, simply because this bot has alot of what I would look for in a Megatron Tank. It is a marked improvement over the G-2 Tank megatron in design and though I would prefer the colors to be a dark grey and or urban camo, it does look quite nice. It envokes a feeling of the original Marvel UK comics for some reason, a very nice figure. Not to mention it compliments Optimus prime very nicely in the 2 pack.) ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=19

4. Classics Megatron ( affectionately or menacingly called the "Nerf" Megatron, this version is supposed to represent a cybertronian Blaster, and is colored in bright colors due to US Gun toy laws. Its ok, and has a Robotmode that resembles the G-1 Megatron. The only reason I would not choose this over the tank is that in G-1 they take on Human weapons and disguises, and a cybertronian gun sticks out and doesn't fit the overall concept of "Robots in Disguise" earthen disguises.. now had they made him a revolver and still had an orange tip it would be a little more believeable as Megatron earth version..not to mention the other bad qualitites we touched on, but still He's 4th on my list becasue a repainted version of him would make him look badass, and his bot form is very well executed in design.) ;)^ ;)^

5. Titanium Megatron (He would have been like number 3 on this list had they released him in a larger format and with a little less diecast, more plastic. His altmode is fantastic and superb even better then the classics Tank megatron and that is the only reason he's down here on the list is because he should have been a lot larger, more plastic and in the classics line up, I love his Botmode, but If i was to add anything I would have had them add a large rocket launcher to the back of the Tank altmode, which then could become his arm canon, not too big a fan of the shoulder one, but still a nice robot, and again gives me reflections of the Marvel UK Transformers Comics..the face sculpt is fantastic!! Man that tank alt mode is wonderful, nice colors too...a definate Buy) ;)^ ;)^ ;)^ ;)^
BotMode:

AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=23

6.) War Within Megatron (a great likeness, the only problem is he is in the titanium series, too much diecast.. See I advocate diecast, but its in a 30% diecast to 70% Plastic ratio that I consider its best uses.. if there is too much diecast the toy suffers, so my opinion of the Titanium series is what prompts me to place these Megatrons low on the list..that said had they released WW Megatron in the regular line up he'd be 4th under the regular Titanium Megatron.. they are simply nice designs and great alt and robot modes, they actually compliment each other.. and would work as the updated "gun law safe" revised Megatron for G-1. those are what the Classics line should have released..) ;)^ ;)^
BotMode:

AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=29

Generation 2:

1.Megatron G2 "Green Version" ( ok not bad in altmode, seriously lacking in Botmode due to articulation and elongated chin, not to mention the huge chest.., but he was faithful to the design, much has improved since his debut..if your into G2 he's the best version..) ;)^ ;)^
BotMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=44
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... =1&image=6

2. Meagtron G2 Purple (ok super soaker weapon aside and the fact he was smaller, i really like this version, there could have been some improvements and overall, he's not that bad. He's armed to the teeth, and has some cool stickers, but the Purple Tank...?? well that is something I don't think i would ever see, unless they made "Legally Blonde" in charge of the military..still nice bot and alt modes..) ;)^
BotMode:

AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... =1&image=0

Ok, well thats G-1 up to G-2 so far..

Beast Wars to Beast Machines and beyond:

1. Megatron reissue 10th anniversary ( For me this is like the best representation of the Beast Wars Megatron, his colors are fantastic, the bot mode is wonderful the face is uncanny, i love this bot!!The blue and paint applications are fantastic, you really feel like the Beast Wars Megatron just jumped out of the TV and into your hands.. I would buy him in a heart beat!! For all intents and purposes, he's a masterpiece Beast Wars Megatron!!) :x ;)^ ;)^ ;)^ ;)^
BotMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=50
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=10

Megatron Reissue (Galvatron version) Do i even need to say it, i mean the sculpt is badass, and yes we have seen Megatron's repainted to death, but damn if those colors don't make this guy look goood!!! I mean wow!! Plus he has freaking stomach muscles!! he is just a great release..) :x ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

BotMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=76
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=28

3. Megatron Reissue 10th Anniversary (Japan Release)
(Ok, similar to the standard release, but proof posative that not every thing that comes out of Japan is the best.. the paint apllication though nice on the other reissues are wonderful, this megatron reissue is lacking.. yet he is still an marked improvement over the orginial release..) ;)^ ;)^

BotMode:

AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=36

4. Beast Wars Transformers Megatron "Flame dragon" (Now that was a monster!! He was badass, his super spark combo and firey body was amazing, he is the best upgraded fire breathing dragon transformer i have ever seen!! As far as where Megatron could go in upgrades, this is the machine!!! Ofcourse it took G-1 Megatron's spark to do it.. he.. he.. he..But he is a great overall toy, nice menacing look, great transformation, articulation was there, paint applications, and likeness spot on.. so I'd place him 3rd.. He's just a sweet transformer!! An Emperor of Destruction!!) :x ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

BotMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=43
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=14

5. Beast Wars Transformers Megatron "Gatortron"
(Ok so i may get alot of hell for this guy being next, but hey, I can't help it.. there is just something about this guy that really looks cool!! Maybe its the fact that He reminds me of the prehistoric Predators from Ice Age 2 that do it, but the Gatortron is awesome, a break from the dinosaur and dragon design.. i really like him, he kinda envokes a Gi Joe nostalgia feel, and I don't know why.. but he is a great looking figure, playability is up there, the sculpt is wonderful,Sometimes Less is more and this guy is just cool!! and i could see him in the swamps stalking autobots for breakfast.. sneaky!!) :x ;)^ ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

Bot Mode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=38
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=10

6. Beast Wars transformers Megatron "TransMetals"
(Ok, i wasn't the greatest fan of the Transmetals series, but I do like the way this guy comes together, wether you like the series or hate it.. this megatron delivers in colors, and bot mode.. he's nice and gritty, has a robot Godzilla appeal, so that why he is number 6 on my list of beast Wars Transformers..) ;)^ ;)^

BotMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=49
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=17

7. Megatron Beast Wars "Original" ( here is the bot that set the bar of what came later..he was the first and best of what followed G-1 and he is also the first transformer to incorporate Masters Of the Universe into the Line.. Man-E-Faces, LOL... kidding aside he's still a nice piece, and only because of his extras and nostalgia does he beat out the Robot Masters version in my book..) ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

BotMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=59
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=14

8. "Robot Masters" Beast Wars Megatron (Ok, not a bad overall figure, smaller then the line up releases, but this was certainly the first step in the realistic designs from the cartoon. It was a nice piece and the price isn't too bad. His colors are a little light. Still he's at the bottom of my list for a reason. he's good but not the best one i'd choose to purchase...but still a great figure non the less. nice likeness though.) ;)^

BotMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=41
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... =1&image=9

WELL THATS IT FOR NOW FOLKS, I THINK AS FAR AS THE CREAM OF THE CROP FROM BEAST WARS TO G-1 GOES I'VE GOT THE ONES I'D BUY..There are some from Robots in disguise, and Armada/Energon/Cybertron i would also review, but I'm tired of writing and linking.. so this will do for anyone who wants a brief idea of whats out there..

DISCLAIMER- my comments are in no way a reflection of what you may like and as such are just a relection of my choices of the best to the later ones..

Ok, I have rested up and on to Part 2 of the Review and Best buy category..

Lets kick off with Armada/Energon/Cybertron Shall we..

1. Megatron Armada (Ok, i really like this piece, he's got great form, I love the head sculpt, very menacing and regal as an emperor of evil. The swivel tank canon and the gimmicks make this my first choice of Transformers from the Updated series. he had the Minicons, the ability to combine and upgrade his power, he was a nice figure, except he should have had more articulation.. I would definately recommend him though, as a great buy. :x ;)^ ;)^ ;)^ ;)^
BotMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=31
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=11

2. Energon Megatron ( now he was a nice break away from the concepts of previous Megatrons, his altmode was a cybertronian jet, and his Botmode sported an updated Galvatron look. Overall not bad, it was as if G-1 was repeating itself over again, only this guy was still called Megatron.. Good paint Applications, nice head sculpt, his Minicons and weaponry were top notch, almost an equal for the Armada, only the Armada has that Badass head and body design and the combiner quality, that beats out this guy..but only by a very small margin..
:x ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

BotMode:

AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=23

3. Megatron Cybertron (Beast Form) Ok i know I'm a little partial to the Beast Wars Megatron molds, but this guy is seriously kickass, even if he's a repaint of the existing Megatron from Beast Wars in Galvatron colors, he's still an awesome bot, and the repaint only makes him look that much better, he's my first choice for the Cybertron megatrons and that because of the look..and overall value of the mold itself, its just the best!! :x ;)^ ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

BotMode:

AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=20

4. Megatron "Robots In Disguise/Car robots" (now I like this guy, he's great in design, his articulation was sweet. I really think he was a wonderful additon to the genre, he too was a different form from the conventiaonal line ups and really made you think that this was a great megatron. He was a menacing and ferocious Dragon.. Even if you hated the kids and the pokemonish nature of the show, this Megatron does deliver in playability, design and form. a triple changer..Great head sculpts and nice paint applications..extremely nice and a must buy..) ;)^ ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

BotMode:

AltMode:

http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=43

5. Megatron Cybertron (Master Megatron)
(Wether you like triple changers or not, this Master Megatron delivers. he is a sweet transformer, good use of articulation and great transformation, he's not the best transformer or version of Megatron i have ever seen, but he sure does make for an imposing bad guy.. more crafty in appearance then evil and menacing. Still a nice buy if you can find him..you can't go wrong with the Batmobile, the only reason he's not on top is his wildly colorful patterning, i would prefer him Black, Grey and maybe dark purple..) ;)^ ;)^ ;)^

AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=25
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=51

6.Megatron Convention Club Exclusive (this release in nice but I'm not a fan, atleast its a good representation of a revisioned Megatron for the Beast Wars, atleast thats what he looks like. Not bad, if you can get him that is..) ;)^ ;)^

BotMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... &image=141
AltMode:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/fullsize ... 1&image=45

7. Megatron Megabolt "Beast Machines" (this release of the famed Megatron has gotta be my least favorite in terms of design, now the toy isn't half bad, but the giant head thing is just a little too much for me to really get behind this one. So he is at the bottom of my recommend list..he has a great metallic paint application and good articulation, and a nice head sculpt...still if your in to the Quasi futuristic Megatron, this is the one for you...) ;)^

BotMode:

AltMode:

Well thats it for the Mighty megatron Buyers Guide and review, i'm sure i left some off, but overall there is alot to choose from when it comes to the Old Bucket head..I certainly hoped you found this little tangent helpful, entertaining, and informative, if not a great display of what is here in the archives of the cybertron toy gallery..

Sincerely,
Skywarp-2 Transfan for life!

Weapon: Indepentently Targetable Particle Beam Cannons
I'll post my reply to your post on the other thread.

3.Megatron G-1 Classics Deluxe ( I would have to choose this version over the Megatron Classics Megatron "Nerf" Gun, simply because this bot has alot of what I would look for in a Megatron Tank. Not to mention it compliments Optimus prime very nicely in the 2 pack.)He would be higher up the ladder, placing him only under MP. if only he did not have that dinky little spinning arm weapon. That really adds nothing to the toy, but actually detracts from it. A Real arm, with a big fusion cannon (heck even the same weapon, but arm mounted instead of arm replacing) as an arm cannon would have been easier to implement, and would have looked 1000 times better. A good Megatron, with just one flaw.

I'm not a big fan of this Megs, only because I was never a big fan of G1 Gun Megs. Don't get me wrong, the Cartoon Megs was an awesome villain, but the toy was never what I wanted from a toy. I always wanted either a life size Starscream to hold him, or a smaller version of him, that Starscream could hold. In any case this one would loose a few positions IMHO

...

Can't say much about the G2 versions, since i never owned them nor find them very appealing.

As for the More Recent Megatrons i would have to place them as follows.

My personal Favorite: R.I.D. Megatron/Galvatron
Character wise he was a still and evil scheming Megs, which appeals to me. Toy version: he was a very versatile Megs. Even if some modes did not really look like what they claimed to be. Poseability alone makes this a great Megatron.

Armada Megatron: A Tank Megatron is always a good Megatron. Although limited Articulation and no arm gun make this one loose a few points. Still great incarnation of Megs, if not so much in the Cartoon.

Energon Megs: Plane Megs was more of a Galvatron homage, and as such is low in the list. Don't really think of Megs as a Plane. But hey he looked good.

Cybertron Megs: This one I just really don't like A futuristic Batmobile, does not represent Megatron at all.

You rate Megabolt Megatron too low.

Did you know that his head component is able to be attached to the Fortress Maximus body? :-?

and that, is food for thought.

Yes, but I don't and probably will never have a Fortress Maximus, so that's kind of a moot point. :-(

Weapon: Laser Scalpel
there are many good ones. we can critique them all day.
or admire them all day.

so I have to narrow them down. draw the line somewhere.
if not I end up with ALL of them and I can't afford that.

these are my requirements.

1) mini-con compatible

2) affordable

list I end up with:

-Armada Meg
-Energon Meg <--pushing the affordable part
-Classics Meg
-McDonald's Armada Meg!!!!!!

Technically, he Megabolt Megatron goes more with Brave Max, who isn't beyond the affordability limits of reason.

Brave Max is going for about $350 now? I don't know really.

Happily, I got mine for $100 many moons ago.

Skywarp I'm suprised that you like Ti Meg.

LOOKS wise I think he is AWESOME!!!!!
even not having the cannon on his arm doesn't bother me,
cause now he's like PREDATOR with the shoulder cannon.

as a toy he is one of the WORST I have seen.
flimsy, falls apart, unposeable, YUCK!

display only.

even at my age, I look for playability

I agree, i love playability.. unless its in MP transformers where I pay alot of money for looks, transformation, and quality materials and paint applications.. playability comes last in that category when it comes to this guy... TI Megatron is flimsy and not very well put together I agree, I gave him points based on looks alone, but if he were to be reborn, so to speak , in the classics line and have better articulation and built quality, not ot mention the Missle launcher which could double as the arm canon, then he would be like the best Megatron ever!!! Next to MP Megatron , he would be the perfect replacement to the original G-1 Megatron..He looks like a fantastic rendition of the Marvel UK comics Megatron for some reason.. i have no idea why, but he's fantastic in looks, the fact that he's titanium is regretibly a downfall which casues him to be hated, even though he's a kickass design, minus the missing arm canon/Rocket launcher he should have..I still love him, and his design and hold out for them to make him in either the classics line up, or Takara/Tomy to get wise and do him in Masterpiece format  ..

Weapon: Laser Scalpel
yeah looks wise ti meg is one of the best.
I don't know I really don't mind the missile launcher
on his shoulder, star scream has guns on his arms,
Meg to be like PREDATOR is kind of cool...
imagine it auto-target with laser sight... and Meg
doesn't even move, sitting on his thrown....

yeah they need to remake him.

and whats with the Glavatron + G1 meg?????
what does that look like?

I agree, a remade titanium Megatron, remade into a leader class with alot less diecast, would be wonderful, especially if he were larger had the missile launcher as an attachement that would benefit the tank mode as well as an arm canon, he then could keep the shoulder canon, since we all know megatrn can utilize more than one weapon, just the arm canon was always the primary, even in G-1 the cartoon Megs used his back canon, and swung it under his arm in an episode.. even if it was once... its still a cool feature.. and would certainly bring this Megatron, if redone, closer ot the original..Not to mention how badass the Titanium looks..But if they re did him and made him better in articulation, added the rocket launcher to the tank and bot mode, he'd be a perfect replacement for the G-1 gun and safe to market next to Prime..

added the rocket launcher to the pics of him to see what it'd look like, not bad..IMO

1- MP Megatron But he's breakable due to his weak small pegs. The robot mode is the closest to the original show.
His alt mode is also impressive. Even if it's bigger than the real thing. It includes the sword ,and gun he uses in the first TF film. They even throw Kreemzeek as an additive bonus. For Kreemzeek fans. They should of included the stock ,and silencer. They'll do it later. I'm sure to get people to buy another version which Takara Tomy is accustomed to do.

2- G1 Megatron with uncle attachments His robot mode may not be perfect. His altmode is a realistic looking p-38 ,and is the charm of this piece. Hasbro original release doesn't include the plastic bullets or the moon shine sword like Takara's original release or reissues.

The other Megatrons don't interest me.

Ok so i revised the TI Megatron a bit, I tried to get him cleaned up some and look more posable like what he could be in a leader class or something, I also added a new head, and changed his added canon a bit.. and added a decepticon logo emblazened on his chest, but if they ever redid Titanium megatron and made him just a little better, less or even no diecast, his figure would be awesome..

Weapon: Laser Scalpel
after all the researching
I think I have to agree with Leo and say
Classics Meg, not sure, when he arrives I will
let you guys know what I think, and how he measures
up to VP!

Other than that my votes:

G1 Meg = the godfather (the price is )

Armada Meg = awesome (a bit expensive)

Energon Meg = awesome (a bit big for me, too expensive)

I gotta say though that the Botcon exclusive Megatron Rocket launcher toy is actually pretty cool, especially if you look at him from a Beast Wars point of view..
