But the modifications you speak of are performance, because aesthetics are easy. But the point remains. Good looks ain't cheap if you want quality.

And like I said, there were a few Pintos, so I'm probably confusing the words.

For reference, which car did you put the motor in exactly?
I'm interested to know how that worked out for you as well.

BTW, you get Hot Rod where you are right?

No, Hot Rod must only be sold in one town in America. OF COURSE I DO!

It was in a Merkur XR4Ti which was a European Ford imported to America under the Mercury brand. The motor made around 400hp at the wheels when all was said and done, but it was way more than $1000 bucks to get that power, more like above $10 grand in modifications.

You need to understand something, all these magazines are bull, when you start modifying a car for power, nothing works right the first time. Any car person knows this. And once you begin, you either have to spend the money or abandon it. So if you want something fast, but don't want to spend a lot modifying it, buy a car that is stock and fast or something someone else already modified.

It sounds like you have a lot to learn about cars. You should join some car forums and start seeing what it takes. I've watched people drop 50 grand on a motor and still not get it to work right.

Yes, I already said that.

The only thing keeping me from going to a car forum is that I don't exactly feel right. I tried, and all I got was in the effect of "lol omg ur just a kid lol," if you get my point. I'd rather just read books...which is shocking coming from me...than deal with that.
You're probably a better source on your own than a forum.
Unless you find one where you can soundly support otherwise, I'll just stay content.

With the whole nothing works first time thing, that is a given for almost anything you'll ever do, probably.

Next point, buying a "fast" stock. Yeah right. I can't afford any car from 2000 and beyond, and even so, old cars, if they are fast, aren't in the budget. I'd rather buy a cheap car and spend on mods than put it all on the base and have nothingto do.

And on one pre-modified, that's not a problem, but I just don't like it. It makes me feel weird that I bought a car that I didn't put effort into. If I'm modifying my car, I'm doing it. There are other circumstances, but if all is avoided (which is unlikely), it's my car for a reason. But if I can, I'll be the one working on it.

But you make the point obvious, and I can accept it. moneyis a big issue.
But I'm not gonna abandon my car. I'd rather go with plan A and spend what needs to be spent to finalize it.

On a lighter note, let's move awaqy from all this stuff, because you've done it again and I've learned that much more. (That was a compliment)
You've intrigued me on the Merc. What name exactly was it sold under in America?

Oh, and BTW, anyone have any particular car they want pics of? I'm going to the Mototr Trend show in a bit.

You're getting the point. And the way I am posting you can tell is typical of a car forum. That's just hw it goes in the car world. You just need to know to hold back the comments that sound to good to be true and ask a specific question about something you read in a post and you'll get by without the ridicule.

And you can find something for a decent price that is fast, inexpensive and fun. You might need to open your mind a little, but there are a lot of cars out there that are fun and cheap. Remember it's more fun going fast in a s low car than going fast in a fast car.

The car I was talking about is called a Merkur XR4Ti, google it. It was an importation of the legendary Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, minus the Cosworth motor. If you have a budget, I can put a list of cars together that you should consider and tell you how much money you need to spend to achieve a certain horepower/performance level.

Thank you. I'm sure you can figure it out.
Here's the budget. For the car itself anywhere from 0-6000 dollars. For modificatrions, it would depend on how much you'd think is needed, altohugh personally I'm not sure how much can be afforded.
Obviously it'll be a used car, but I'm sure you can think of many that sell on that price.
I myself will kep searching, so you really don't need to do much if you'd prefer not to.
Which reminds me, remember how you said I'd better off buy a fox body over the '70 Mustang? We almost had the perfect '87 GT for 500 bucks. But someone beat us to it by three seconds..literally.

Oh, I also have the pics ready, I'll need to upload them, and for those interested I got some walkaround vids too.

Lose the enormous 23 inch rims, lose the fender vents, put on some more GMC styled headlights instead of those LED lights, and we've got something to talk about.

Sherade, it just depends on which car forums you join. Motortrend forums are full of bitchy people who wanna fight and bicker over all the different opinions out there. I go to GMInsidenews a lot, as I like GM models more then anything else, and it's better, because at least everyone is there because they like the same kind of things. The best forums I've ever been to are usually forums that support the cars that you actually own and drive. Because you all have something in common, you all have first hand knowledge, and there's plenty of people tossing around ideas that you can get interested in. Whose lowering their cars with what springs, whose using such and such parts, even whose doing what to save gas and increase mileage to your model. And with nearly every make having some kind of online club these days (example - kia forums), you could probably join a community that would teach you first about your car, and then you can move on to learn about other cars. Just don't go and try to impress people, go in and ask honest questions and be ready willing to learn. They may laugh at the "just a kid", but they'll be cool and help along an aspiring enthusiast.

I think my daily driver will give both those a run. But pictures of cars don't tell me the mods in them. My last car looked completely stock, but had over 100 more hp than it came with. My previou car before that might have looked what some term "riced out", but it had 400 more hp than it came with.

Maybe you missed the previous post where the person posted a picture of their car and said "I'll race". Hence the invitation to armchair race (often a popular concept on car forums).

Evolution Prime, I noticed in your post you had "I'll race." As an automtive enthusiast, I would like to "armchair race" as well. What mods do you have in there, from the front it looks stock, but you might have a sleeper that owns us all. While I'm familiar with all sorts of cars, I see no tell tale signs of what modifications you might have other than what look like Cobra Rims and the hint of an exhaust from the chrome peaking out from behind the car. Often in the import world people have giant intercoolers in the fron which is a give away of the power and thus makes it easier to tell if the car is fast or not. Thus, you could be stock or have a nice Supercharger with an water based intercooler and a built motor running lots of power. But I'm unsure and would like to know.

Now back on subject I'm interested in what people have ran in the quarter mile (since it's the only thing we can really compare in front of a computer).

Sherade, there was a topic about this on one of the forums I visit (it's a very unbiased website both import and domestics are cool) and the title was up to 8000 to spend in total, in terms of popularity here are the winners:

1. Mazda Miata (Surprised me)
2. E90 (early 90s) 3 series BMW
3. Honda Civic (I know that's out of the question for you)
4. Early 90's Mustang (more of a straight line car)
5. Early 90's Nissan 240 SX

Now I know you don't like Japanese cars, but one of the popular thing that people do with the 240SX is put a Chevy or Ford V8 in it. So yo have a 2400lb, amazing handling, with a RWD American V8...in disguise.

First off, it's your condescending attitude that gets you my scorn. Your attitude about cars seems to make you feel like "the expert", when in fact there are plenty of us out here who are enthusiasts, and are also members of many car forums, so don't start talking down to me. I've probably been banned for hot headed racing discussions from more car forums then you probably have ever registered to. And I've also been to the track and run every single car I own, have timeslips for all my runs, and do all my own modifications when I buy them, so don't think you've got anything over anyone else with your know-it-all attitude. There's plenty of others that'd suprise the hell out of you.

Oh, and Champ, I did contribute to the validity of the thread, but you didn't seem to notice, what being ready to tell everyone you were faster. You think you're talking shop, but all you're doing is talking crap. Until you stop sitting and saying such things and start backing up your own assertions, lets be clear about who isn't contributing what. =;

Actually you haven't posted anything of validity in this thread besides one post. All I did was talk about some of my experiences and gave information to Sherade. Twice I've asked to talk about going to the track and modification and twice you've responded like this. And yea, I stated I thought I was faster as away to get a discussion going. A proper response would have been something like "Oh yea, my last car ran an 11.1 at 130mph" and I would have said, "What kind of car?, What did you do to it? Post some time slips". Instead you are carrying it out this way. I am all for "hot headed" car discussions and I'd like to be surprised that some members here are as much into cars a me (I haven't found any in the four years I've been on this site), but if it's not on topic and you keep carrying on in this manner, I'll take off my car guy hat and put on my moderator hat and start issuing warnings.

Sherade got a good car thread going for once on this site (longest car thread since I've been here). So talk about cars. What was your first car you modified, best 1/4 mile run, best mod, etc.

It is a 1995 Ford Mustang GT, the last year they put the 5.0 in them. It is pretty much stock. Only things I have done with it is put in a K&N Air Filter and put in a new exhaust on it. So it might only be pushing 250 hp, at most. Yes those are Corbra R rims on it as well. It is a sleeper by no means. I just like messing with Firebird and Camaro owners. My car is fast, but not as much as it could be. Plus it is weighted down in the back end. So yeah, a lot of cars could beat me. Though I have beat an Impalla SS with the LT1 engine in it, but that is a heavier car than mine.

GD, just to clear it up, it's not Japan, it's imports. It just happens European ones seem very scarce round here.
And can you give me the forum? Because my bias is to companies, not always the cars they produce. As long as it isn't company based, I can go unbiased.
Like the Civic. I don't care who makes it, I just can't feel for it, it never clicked.
As for the list, I think I can do that. 8000 is a nice tuck actually.
About the engine swap, good idea, yes, but I have a thing about out of company swaps. And not just to imports. I mean, you don't put a chevy in a ford if you get it. Maybe intra company, but not throughout.
But you raise a good point. After all, the engine makes the car.
I'll look it up, and maybe we'll see. I'd be happy to change that opnion.
And by early 90's you mean before the Fox-4 platform, right? Just the original 80's carryover fox.
Because if an '87 doesn't show, a '91 is looking good.

And guys, I know we have our arguments, but don't get into stuff like this.

Y'know, the Nitro always had that thing to it, with it's styling.
It's real nice inside too.

I have an 03 Ion that I have been modding slightly over the years, nothing to extravagant nor pricey.

Changed the muffler from stock to a magnaflow to let it breathe slightly better.
Used DIY parts from Spectre performance to make a CAI.
New Wheels and tires.

Going to be lowering it soon and repainting it.

I like to have a little show and a little go. Just the right balance of each.

I replaced my 18 chrome rims with some 17's in black with a polished lip. First time out the driveway I noticed a difference in the feel of it and I prefered that to the chrome. Much easier to maintain as well. It's going to get dropped between 1.5" to 2"

Normally an Ion 4-door doesn't draw me, but when you finish, it will.
