I think you'll need the Lvl 1 Energy Upgrade and the Lvl 1 Propulsion Upgrade from the lab before you can build a shipyard. The upgrades however are expensive, as are the ships once you finally get the option to build them.

The robotics lab however, I have not regretted. The first level alone provides a significant boost, so if nothing else, go ahead and build the cheapest one.

Im about 10 dutonimiwhatsits away from 200 so im thinking speeding up mine production to fund future upgrades may make more sense.
