Well, that was certainly interesting, wasn't it? I'm liking the concept of Unicron being surrounded by Earth. I've never heard of that storyline being used in any of the continuities. Also, didn't expect such an early physical confrontation between Optimus and what I'm calling Unicron's Heralds. It will be interesting to see how this all develops, and what role Megatron will play in the outcome...
They're not really heralds. The Fallen is a herald, Shokaract is a herald, Galvatron was a herald. Those weren't heralds, that was Unicron himself forging tiny little versions of himself and controlling them directly, which is why I used the term avatar.

He probably figured he could appeal to Unicron's ego. Hence why he referred to him as Lord Unicron, and kept complimenting him. Optimus thought Unicron would like the idea of having a planet of tiny little servants, following his every command, or else he'd transform and roll out and end the Earth itself.
It turns out, Unicron is a bit more picky about his followers, and his standards are much, much higher. Which, now that I think about it, is a major blow to the Fallen's job security.
