Should weigh? The BMI is not always correct especially since it does not figure bone structure. Some people are bigger boned and have different skeletal frames.
Like I said if I weighed 165 I would look emaciated.

How much muscle you have also affects it. I know guys that their BMI would say they were extremely obese when if fact they were very muscular.

I'm 5'8" and I believe my BMI says I should be around 155-160?

That would be absurd. When I was in the dojo everyday, really fit, and in great shape I was always in the 175 range.

I did manage to get down to 155 at one point, but in order to do it I had to go on a starvation diet (1800) calories with a 2 mile run everyday and additional martial arts work-outs. My family thought I was dying.

I'm over what I want to be right now by about 10-15 pounds. It's entirely because I have taken a desk job where I do nothing but sit around. Compounding the issue is that I don't have anywhere enjoyable to work out around here.

Not that I'm making excuses, if I felt really bad about it, I'd be out running at night. I think at this point I'm just waiting to get a raise at work and enroll in a martial arts program.

CP is the last person you'd think was fat. BMI is seriously overrated, when I was my "ideal weight" I looked pretty scrawny.

Just to add to the BMI thing, I've heard they ("they" as in some medical professionals) are starting to throw it out. It's good if you're the textbook BMI example, but bad for the other 5.9 billion people.

According to the BMI chart, I'm supposedly overweight by about 10 pounds, but people say I'm too thin. I'm probably heavier because I go to the gym three times a week and do cardio and weight training. It's the weight training. Muscle is heavier than fat.

More Protein (lean meats, eggs, fish) and weightlifting with heavier amounts, less reps to increase bulk and muscle size.

A few years ago I was pushing 300, offically I was 292, but I went a month without weighing myself.

Went on Weight Watchers online, no meetings, no groups, and went down to 200. Held it off for a couple of years, but recently I've crept back up to 230. Keep an eye on your caloric intake, and a little exercise and you are good to go.

Less than 3% body fat?

That doesn't sound very healthy.

3% body fat is either an exaggeration, a miracle or a dangerous number.

Definitely not normal and could be unhealthy as was said.

frustrating because i get more snide comments thrown in my face than people that are clearly overweight...

I eat everything i'm told i should and am for the most part considered healthy.

I believe the factor that limits me the most is that i can barely work out. Not only do i have no desire to be the scrawny guy at the gym...but i screwed up my shoulder wrestling in high school and developed scapular dyskinesia, making it all the more difficult to do any upper body work.

I was going to start a new thread for this, but I figured it was better to just use this thread.

I way around 300 pounds, not sure the exact weight. Its been years since I've been around a scale. We don't have one here.

I'd like to get down to between 200 and 230.

I am trying to force myself to get into better shape because of the career I am attempting to get into and I can't do that without losing a lot of weight and replacing some of this fat with muscle.

I have the goal, but I lack motivation and drive. It doesn't help that I have zero self esteem. So I guess what I'm asking is, whats the best way to motivate myself when I truly don't like anything about me?(except my hair, my hair rules!)

I'm not looking for a pity party or anything like that, I won't go into details of why my self esteem is destroyed or why I have trouble motivating myself. I just want to hear what you guys do to motivate yourself

Sometimes it takes something to "snap" you into the mindset.
For me it was seeing the weight on the scale and my blood pressure.

I am back to the weightroom now that my doctor released me and boy am I sore. BUT I feel great.

We have a really nice weight set in the garage, but there's no heat in there and its winter time. Currently its around 20 degrees(Fahrenheit).

I guess the cold just adds to the trouble of getting myself motivated

*edit*

Well, after talking to my brother and friend. They are going to help keep me motivated because we all share the same dream. Dakota(friend) is about my size, so we are working on getting the weight off. He has a heated garage with an exercise bike and a part big enough to do suicides. We are going to start off slow and work our way up. Dakota can't start until at least December 30th because he broke his foot, but I'm going to start with the exercise bike before that, probably tomorrow. i'm going to look for a space heater and set it up in the garage so i can weight train. it really helps that my brother and Dakota are as encouraging as they are. For those that are curious, my goal is to get in shape and save up some money to go to pro wrestling ohio's wrestling school.

That's where I'm at; I'll never be the Ultimate Frisbee Freakzoid again but it's a healthy place.

I just got back from walking my dogs in aft-plate-code weather and had a few pieces of advice for those who struggle with cold exercise. (I haven't read the full thread yet, but it seems appropriate given your last posts Sindy :P)

-- Buy ankle and wrist weights to substitute walking for jogging. I added 2 lb ankle weights to walk my dogs (because my jogging pace was too fast for them...) and have been walking for the majority of a mile loop with two or three brief sprints in the middle. It's a lot easier on the lungs and, over time, actually makes the normal running better because your limbs are used to heavier weight. Just follow really good running form if you have weights; I nearly tweaked a knee. Walking with them has been just as enjoyable / effective when I can't keep my form straight.
-- Turn your exercise jacket inside-out when you hang it up. Cold weather means bundling up more and nothing has been more discouraging to me than having to put on the same smelly thing every day. Inside-out lets a little more sweat and stink air out. (Of course, I make no promises for everything else in the closet...)

Gutter Bunny, a friend who was also skin-n-bones would follow a routine of (first) increasing food intake for a period until weight began to increase (then) starting a lifting routine while maintaining the food intake. He had good experiences with this, but definitely recommend taking it to a doctor first. Your body may not appreciate the slingshot effect involved (and he was 16-22 when I knew he was doing this). In myself (although I have no injury) medium weights over longer periods have equally built mass and sculpting but results were much slower.

Just two + two thoughts to help out as I've been on both fit and unfit ends a few times now.

me, when i started seventh grade i was 5'6", 106 lb, no i know you all probly think i should weigh that, but i only look about 90-98lb range. the doc says i have a super fast metabolism so it makes it hard for me to gain weight and keep it for more than a week.

i picked up a sport (basketball) and increased my calorie intake from 2600-ish to about 3300-ish. so far im at 5'7", 119.757lb. and this is in the range of the 4 weeks before basket ball season and now.

Dude, you just need to go total Rocky IV. Then when you're all cut and in shape you can climb to the top of a mountain and yell "DRAGOOOOO!!!!!!"

That would be sweet.

And way to go CB, I didn't even recognize you at first in the show your mugs thread. Keep it up!

Oddly enough I found that once I got to the point that you are at that was the hardest time. I worked so hard to get into good shape but once I got there I regressed and gained all my weight back. I haven't been able to get back into that mind set of eating right and exercising regularly going on three years now. I've tried to get back to where I was but it is really tough. It's really a mental thing now and hopefully I'll be able to kick myself in the ass and get started again.

I, too, have started my weight loss odessey.

Back when I was a senior in high school, way back in 1996, I was 5'11' and weighted 150 lbs. Yeah I was skinny, but I also did run cross country and lond distance track along with playing basketball.

I entered the military and over the course of the summer, got up to 175 lbs. A lot was muscle since my shoulders and legs got bigger, but I actually got out of shape in boot camp.

Over the years I have slowly put on the pounds. It was hard to workout in Orlando where I went to some of my military schools because of the amount of time I had to study along with it always being so darn humid. It was also hard to find time to workout on board a submarine with everything that goes on it.

So here is my goal. I started yesterday. I weighed myself at 230 lbs. i set a goal of 10 to 15 lbs for a one month period. I believe I can achieve that. I plan on cutting out on the bad foods that I have accustomed to eating, reducing my pop intake greatly, drinking more water, and eating right. I have a treadmill and a universal weigh machine at home along with some workout videos I got off of Men's Health.

Apparently losing more than 2 pounds a week isn't good (well, at the start it's okay because some is water weight). Anyway, a pound is somewhere around 3500 calories. So if you work off 3500 calories more than you consume in a week, you've lost a pound; 7000 for two. If you lose more than that, that means you're starving yourself and your body goes into starvation mode. At that point, your body starts feeding on what it's got, and it starts on the muscle before the fat since muscle is more useful.

I'm sure the numbers are different for every person, but I think that's a good guideline. Ten pounds a month when you start out should be okay (the water weight thing), but 15 pounds means you're depriving yourself of 13000+ calories a week (depending on the month).

But check with a diet physician cuz I'm not one and some of my numbers may be wrong.
