To keep the boxes or not?!

Postby CrillanK » Fri Feb 28, 2020 9:09 pm

Hey, all. Just wanted people's thoughts/solutions on keeping the boxes of toys you collect. My instinct is to keep all the boxes, but I have a closet that's almost completely full of them since I take the figures out and display them. With the Earthrise line coming out now, this is about to become a real problem for me, lol!

I'd hate to throw them out. I even thought of maybe opening them and folding them all flat, but then I'd have to throw away the inserts. The WFC boxes all have amazing art and so do some of the other boxes. I just don't have much more room.

Thoughts or ideas? What do you all do with them?

Thanks!

The boxes take up a lot of space, often much more than necessary. Especially with the whole "Package everyone in robot mode" thing.

With Titans Return and Power of the Primes:
For carded toys, I cut off and tossed the bubbles and insulation trays, while holding onto the card and the front art insert. Some cards, I cut up to display the art on my wall (Specifically, I did this with the Dinobots)
For boxed toys, I either flattened the box or cut the art away from the window, and flattened the interior backdrop, while tossing the plastic insert. The exceptions are Fort Max and Trypticon, whose boxes and inserts I kept in their entirety.
With SIEGE and Studio Series, I've similarly been flattening the boxes and the backdrops, while tossing the plastic inserts. Probably going to cut most of the boxes up for the art at some point though.

I used to keep the packaging for all my larger Transformers but then yes space became an issue. I just keep the packaging for any Takara Transformers and larger ones such as Titans and combiners.

I flatten most boxes and throw away the inner packing while saving all papers. The exception is things like Titans (flattening them is just as awkward to store), all Optimus figures, Japanese releases, MPs, large box sets (like the Titans Return sets), and some exclusives. Carded figures always have their bubbles removed and papers saved.

Only packages I can remember throwing away over the last 25 years or so as a collector is Botbots.

I usually toss most normal packaging, unless its a rarer or more unique figure. For example things like that include harder to find Marvel Legends or something big say Siege Jetfire. Every 6 months i like to do a a packaging purge and just make sure Im not becoming a hoarder

Same here. I only keep boxes that typically have lots of tiny accessories included. The rest, go in the bin.
