Toys R Us exclusive Soundwave

Postby Justicity » Sat Sep 15, 2007 4:53 am

I was in the local TRU the other day & I found a couple of shelfs worth of Soundwave figures. I'm not certain of the name, my memory fails me, but he came in a box with an openable flap to see the figure itself, & came along with Lazerbeak & Ravage. Soundwave was displayed in boombox mode & the others were in animal mode. I believe it was selling for around £25, which would using the current store-conversion rate, be around $20. Anyone able to tell me about him? Is he worth getting? Is it a classics redo, is it a reissue of the G1 version? Is it worth digging up £25 which I really should be putting towards getting started driving?

Edit: My bad, this is him here. http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=1169&size=0&start=0
Any good??? Anyone got any recommendations?

Buy it!

If you don't have a G1 Soundwave, get this one!

It's a Soundblaster repaint, so it has the double door.
Which means it can hold both cassettes at the same time.

It's a bit of an oddity this one. It's a commemorative reissue (of sorts) of G1 Soundwave, however this is not the original Sounwave mould its actually that of Soudblaster the reincarnation of Soundwave from the Japanese G1 Headmasters series. The Soundblaster mould is different in that it can carry two tapes and not one, in order to do this the tape door has been extended and protrudes from the toys chest unlike the original mould where the tape door was flush to the figure.

So yes it's a classic redo and yes it's also a G1 reissue but it could also be called a repaint of G1 Soundblaster and therefore an entirely new version of the figure and not a reissue at all. So if you're a G1 purest you might want the original version of both figures, but if you looking for an affordable representation of G1 Soundwave including his two most popular casseticons you cant go far wrong with this guy, Oh and £25 converts to $50 not $20.

If you want a G1 Soundwave and don't mind the Soundblaster style chest go for it. I grabbed one when TRU UK first got them in and love it to bits. If you want a more authentic reissue there's the Encore version which comes with a single capacity chest, but only has one of the tapes (Ravage off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone will correct me if not) instead of the two that come with the Commemrative Series version. We really have been spoilt for choice with Soundwaves lately.

I got that version of him because I've always wanted Soundwave, and at the time the Encore figures had not yet been announced.
This one is definitely good value since it comes with Ravage and Lazerbeak and can store both of them in alt mode too.

However, if you're really concerned about G1 accuracy you could go for the Takara Encore version that is coming out soon.
Though you would have to buy it online, and therefore pay for shipping as well.

I was looking for this version, but couldn't find it so I got the Encore one (that comes with Laserbeak, not Ravage.) People say the plastic on this one feels a bit cheap though. The Encore one is solid through and through, though it is more expensive.

If you don't have a G1 Soundwave and want one, get him.

Soundwave rules. He can transform into his cassette mode and his Cybertron lampost mode. I love my Soundwave.

Best way to get around that is take advantage of their buy 3 for the price of two offer. Spend £50 on 3 Soundwaves and sell the remaining two on ebay. They are going for £20+ at the moment so you may find you Soundwave ends up costing you less than a fiver! Like the one I bought for a friend Birthday did!

Soundwave is one of the best original transformers toys. He's a micro cassette recorder to robot and back. Not a boombox. Blaster his arch rival is that. Cassette minion Laserbeak comes with Soundwave. As an additive bonus he brings Ravage too ,and his chest is bigger. It holds two cassettes instead of one. The same chest door design from his Soundblaster repaint. A great collectable. You won't find him any cheaper than that. Get him he's hard to find and people buy him quick. It's only a toys r us exclusive. Go back there quick and get him fast. Good luck! :-P
Warning don't force the cassette door cause it breaks easily. Ravage is easier to store than Laserbeak. Cause Laserbeak's legs don't fold well in cassette mode. It's a common problem with Laserbeak reissues. Don't know if the old Laserbeak vintage had that problem. I suggest not putting any cassette on the cassette door. The lesser you mess with it the better.

Wow you saw shelves full of him? Anyway, if you can pick up extra, I think you could make some money sellin them off later.

I really like it btw. As has been said he can hold 2 casettes. He's very solid and is worth the money. Not technically a "Classic", since he wasn't redesigned like say, the Seekers or Bumblebee, but a great re-issue nontheless.

Get TRU reissue Soundwave with no hesitation. It's in great flip-open, pop-up display card, window book style, very attractive for showcase display. Quality wise I feel it's about the same as other versions. Best thing is like other members pointed out, you get both Ravage & Laserbeak cassettes.

Go get it now tiger!

Cheers!

Hah, wish I could get more & sell them, but it's going to be hard enough for me to get the money for one, let alone many. Even with a special deal going. Well, when I've saved up, & depending on how much I get paid tomorrow I'll have a looksie for when I can get myself back there. I'm really very tempted now, all these good comments.

I think you can get the TRU one or the Encore one but you should get one of them. I myself prefer the Encore one, not because it looks more like the original but just because I think it looks better. I don't like the protruding chest in the Soundwave colour scheme. I think it looks so much better in Soundblaster's colours. I already have Soundblaster so I already have Ravage so I guess it also depends if you really want Ravage too.

This reissue is what happiness is made of. Well, not really, but it seems that way to me. Soundwave was my favorit Transformer as a child. I still have my original Soundwave, although he needs some new decals.

I highly recommend it. I even have it. While at first I was wild about the double tape thing, I have grown to love it. It reminds me of when Soundwave would open his chest and five tapes would fly out. Ahhh. Memories.

BEWARE OF THE TRU REISSUE!
AVOID IT IF POSSIBLE!
The cassetes that came with mine are so horribly deformed that they are useless in any mode. Ravage is made of decent plastic but Lazerbeak is made of plastic that feels like paper! Soundwave is alright but the legs feel like they are going to break when I transform it.
Get the encore version. Avoid Hasbro! They charged me full price for what is probably a KO.

I got my TRU Soundwave out and felt his legs. I got my original G1 Soundwave out and felt his legs. I had my husband feel both of thier legs. We both say that the pastic feels the same for both the original and the re-release. While it DOES feel like you are going to snap TRU Soundwave's legs off when you transform him, if I'm remembering right, the original G1 Soundwave felt the same when he was new. Mine doesn't now because of many repeated Transformations. The two even feel as if they weigh the same.

Keep in mind however, a lot of G1s were not made of the best plastic either.
