Ok so I have decided to jump into Transformer collecting with my 8 year old son. I keep seeing figures listed as Voyager class, etc. What do these classes mean?

Simply put, price point and size, but not necessarily difficulty. In order of ascending size, the current Classes are:

Cyberverse
Legion
Commander
Vehicles

Main Lines
Deluxe
Voyager
Weaponizers

We used to have a lot more, but the current ones are derived from the Cybertron line of 2005 and the Movie lines from 2007. Here's the list, in you case you come across them:

Legends (current Legion)
Scout (slightly taller than Commander)
Deluxe
Voyager
Ultra
Leader (sizewise they're comparable to Weaponizers)
Supreme
Ultimate

Store Exclusives are in sizes that may differ from the norm, usually being multi-packs.

Ok, that tells me what classes there are, but how do I know what class a figure is by looking at it?

That is a bit difficult to determine from looks alone, as some figures are taller or shorter in length than their Class-mates. Knowing by heart is the way to go, but here are the approximate sizes per Class:

Mini-Con: 2 inches
Legion: 3 inches
Commander: 4 inches

Deluxe: 5.5 inches
Voyager: 7 inches

I need a bigger ruler for Weaponizers, mine's only 8 inches... You'll get the idea though.

O, one more thing: up to Deluxe come on a card, Voyagers and larger are boxed.

Some of the boxes/cards will say "deluxe", "voyager", etc somewhere on the box, sometimes on the side or in a little corner.

the most reliable way to tell class is price point. of course prices have gone up recently but:

legion ~ $5
scout/commander ~ $6+
deluxe ~ $12/15
voyager ~$20/25
weaponizer/leader ~45/50
supreme ~ 60+
ultimate (thats fortmax reissue only) ~$350+

its basically a new size class for every 10 or 15 dollar increment

none of this includes 3rd parties or vintage/preowned stuff cuz the sizes and price points of old are not comperable at all, those are a different ball game. Some old deluxes are as big or bigger than current voyagers and they were only ~$10. the sizes of 3rd party are infinite and the price points are far out in left field due to lack of economies of scale that Hasbro experiences.
