well welcome again and really depends on how much you can spend and if your just a stater you can just start with the movie toys they're fine but you can forgive the hasbro paint crap... it's normal and if you have more time and money you can search for more older figure like g1...

hmm, depends on what stuff you're looking for, how much money, etc...
alternators made me become a collector like a pokemon feind. i never had but 15 - 20 figs before those guys came out.
masterpiece is worthy and great pieces.
any g1 you find (in good condition) at a reasonable price is worth the money too.
all the other lines, aren't too hard to find on ebay, or used at bbts.com
just depends on what you like in your make and model.

i just wish hasbro can paint theyre toys a little more it just that it' transformers they're robots and atleast make them look like real robots like detailed and high quality you know, no slops or smudges smoothly applied like it doesn't fade easily and doesn't pass though other surfaces at least more mettalic silver finish...

Welcome to Seibertron & the glorious world of TF Collecting. To answer your question, I would recommend starting small and get figures that are easy to find and you like. You may see a few Classics or Cybertron figures on clearance and if they are inexpensive, pick up one or two to see if you will like the rest of the line. Also pick up the movie figures now because they are abundant and easy to find. Eventually you will probably have to resort to eBay for any figures that are no longer sold in stores. And that can get expensive. I would also look on Seibertron's vast toy galleries to get the next best thing to holding one in your hand. While it isn't complete yet, Ryan's been working hard on getting galleries for every toy released by Hasbro and Takara. Also use this forum to ask any questions (tip: search to see if it has been answered before you ask) on collecting. The fans here are a friendly & knowledgable bunch who don't mind helping out a new collector. Finally, have fun.

I'd say that a good starting one is Scrapmetal from the Cybertron line. Chance are he'll be on clearance, incredibly cheap, and he's a very good figure. I wouldn't have thought that he'd still be available, but I see him around more often that I thought I would.
