Transformers: Drift

Postby Random » Thu Sep 09, 2010 5:05 pm

Didn't see a topic on this so here goes. I'm liking it. I really wanted to know more about Deadlock and that is exactly what they are serving up. I'm not gonna put any spoilers in, in case some haven't read it yet. Just have a few questions...

Was Deadlock a Seeker? I'm waiting for his alt mode, but I don't see any wheels and he has boosters on his shoulders.

Does anyone have any more info on Turmoil?

Also...the preview for the next issue is AWESOME!

I just picked up #1 today. I'd like to know more about Drift/Deadlock's past in the "gutter". Hopefully that will be revealed next issue.

Was good, not great.

Curious to see the past of Drift/Deadlock and the like of course.

Hope it keeps building some more too, was a fun read I guess u could say.

But like any IDW T-Formers mini series, its better than the regular title
Watching since episode 1 aired in 84

While I thought that Drift #1 was a good, I thought it read way too fast. Is it just me, or do all of IDW's current TF publications read in 5-10 minutes? I remember back to the Dreamwave and Marvel days when a TF comic would take more than 15 minutes to read in some cases. I might be alone in this feeling, but for me, comic value and money "well spent" is directly proportional to the time it takes to read the comic cover-to-cover.

I know what you mean, Bob, it does seem like it reads really quickly. Wonder if it's because we've gotten to be faster readers over the years. :D

I liked the first issue. There's a whole lot of back-story built in that will have to be tied up in the next 3 issues. Looking forward to reading the whole series - even if it just takes me 20 minutes to read the whole thing! Though, I'll be spending a lot more time scrutinizing the story as it unfolds - you know, going back to make sure I don't miss any detail.

One thing that did not help when I read Drift #1 was that the night before I decided to re-read Issue #1 of the Generation 2 series. Needless to say that comparing these two is entirely pointless, but it serves to underscore the fact that the latter comic was bursting at its stapled-binding with storyline even though it was in excess of 30 pages. Since the Drift series is only 4 issues, similar to the Ironhide and Bumblebee series, why is IDW limiting each comic to ~22 pages? As with anything I am assuming it is due primarily to printing costs. With that in mind, I would rather pay 50 cents extra per comic for around 30 pages of solid story instead of $3.99 for a comic that is mostly action sequences without a either dialogue or a substantial supporting story.

I do want to reiterate that I enjoyed Drift #1 -- I just wish that IDW would give us more bang for our buck in terms of a story...maybe I should have left Issue #1 of the Generation 2 series in the comic box until after the Drift mini-series was fully released...

Well, back then, comics were written with the single issue itself being the final product. Now a days it's all about the trade, and the end result is that the pacing in comics across the industry has just gotten bogged down with that mindset.

A perfect example of this is the fact that you could have pre-ordered the Drift TPB at least two months prior to the publishing/release of the first comic issue. While I understand that TPBs are yet another way for publishers to turn a profit, they should not be the sole end when publishing a story -- the story itself and how it develops should be the primary focus, not if the story fits into a convenient box dictated by page number and ease of TPB publishing.
