While it's not FOR SURE (I don't want anyone to think I'm assuming things here) that's most likely Orci and Kurtzman taking a jab at themselves, referencing the Diego Garcia NEST base and then shooting the Autobots into space in DotM.

2: That thing about sending them into space, isn't referencing to the movies, but to a G1 two-parter called Megatron's Master Plan, http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Megatron%27s_Master_Plan%2C_Part_1

3: The island reference is to Rescue Bots, where the main cast lives on a island

See, now, I've read that that plotline in DotM was BASED off of Megatron's Master Plan, so that could really go either way. As far as the island thing goes, you could be right, but unless that's confirmed, I'm going to hold out hope that it's just Kurtzman and Orci making fun of themselves.

You are correct, but if you view it from a historical standpoint, it homages MMP

The small island town of Griffin Rock, Maine, is a testing bed for all kinds of new experimental technologies and gadgets. Most of these have a propensity for running amok or malfunctioning spectacularly. It's a good thing the island has its own team of alien robots to protect the populace.
