Transformers the Movie (Action Figures) for the Adult Market

Postby PRIMEinHD » Sun Jun 17, 2007 7:05 pm

Hi guys just wanted to say I'm new to these forums and like everyone else can't wait for the movie to come out. I too have gone out and purchased some of the toys but admit I'm a bit disappointed in their overall quality. To me I wish Hasbro would actually make a new line (call it whatever you want) of Transformers based off the movie and make them metal or some solid material instead of cheap plastic. I can't tell you how many times I think I broke something just by trying to transform the action figures. That way you can satisfy the older crowd too by giving them something that is a bit better from a quality standpoint and not having to feel like they are buying something that is really geard towards the younger crowd.

Plus this will allow Hasbro to redo some of their characters and add a bit more detail to them.

First off, welcome to Seibertron PrimeinHD!

Actually I think the Movie line is targetting the more older fans. Although the figures have cheap plastic, they are highly detailed, don't have gimics like lights/sounds and missiles shooting. They're just solid figures which from my opinion, look like they are meant for display not for play.

Blurrz, I got the Optimus Prime Robo-vision figure from Target and the Voyager Starscream. I do like both of them and can't wait until they release the Voyager Megatron. I also heard there is going to be a Voyager Prime but haven't seen any pics of this one yet.

Voyager Class Prime is the same as Robo Vision Prime, just without the chrome paint detail.

As for adult market toys, I think post-movie would be a great time to reintroduce the Alternators. G1-type molds with detailed alt modes? People would really get a kick out of it. Might not be a bad time, either, to do a Silverstreak redeco as Prowl. Even a "Greatest Hits" line-up with 'Streak or Prowl, and, say, Hound, Jazz(with G1 paint job) and Mirage would probably do well.

Alternators/Bins/Kiss have been the 'adults' line since day 1. Licanced, detailed alt modes, complex transformations and look good on a shelf/in a case.

Of course there are the Masterpieces too, but not enough IMO.

Alternators are great if you have them all displayed and you have a possible future GF coming over. Just make sure they are all in atl made and you have a manly man collection of die-cast cars. ;)

(EDIT: Please not that my wonderful GF has always supported my TF hobby, and I didnt need to trick her... honestly :P )

...wait, what? A pretty good chunk of the figures have spring-loaded missiles and the Leader class figures do have lights and sound. They're not much more detailed than a lot of the figures from previous lines either (Cybertron Unicron for example).

You might want to look into the 6inch titanium figures. They're oriented more towards the adult market. And it seems the Movie line will have some titanium figures.

Ohh I've reached my 800 post yay!

Yep - Leader Prime shoots a missile and has lights and sound, Bumblebee shoots missiles, Blackout and Scorponok have spinning blades, Barricade has a "launching" arm, Leader Megatron has lights and sound, Ironhide shoots missiles...

Yeah, the Alts do appear to have been geared more toward the adults from the start. At the same time, I'm not sure they ever got marketed in quite the right way. With all the 80's fans really coming back due to the movie, it would be a great time to reintroduce them.

And my fiancee actually GOT the first Alternator we ever owned. Granted, Smokescreen stayed in a box for a long time, until I got Silverstreak, but still. =p (I never got that. Some toys I can see keeping in the box. Transformers are NOT one of them.)

Yah.. but compared to other lines(excluding alternators), these missiles aren't as flashy as others.. the models look really plain unlike the Unicron trilogy, etc.

Well there are the non transforming kind known as the Robot Replicas, which are Uber detailed and super articulated.. but thats why I was calling for a Movie masterpiece line up, which would be ultra Complex, good amounts of diecast, strategically placed for support values, and high grade quality plastic..with ultra paint applications and very spot on likenesses to the actual movie forms..Takara Tomy would have to take that on, and it would be a specialty market thing only, like say with the Masterpiece line up...

most people here disagree, and say that a figure like that would be too complex to transform, but hey if it takes me an hour to transform a high end transformer, then thats ok with me.. because I got what I paid for.. who wants a super highly detailed figure thats too easy to transform?? If your more inclined to have a faster transformation, your gonna sacrifice kibble and likeness for ease of transformation..

I've also heard the complaint that if they did do a Masterpiece Movie line up, that it would be basically a transform once and display piece, and wouldn't be any fun at all.. uhhhh.......well.......... duhhh!!!!

That's the whole point of the line, look like the actual movie bot, be functional, but not really for playtime.. just for the older market and display/posing only.. with transformations a key component, and hence the structural diecast and heavy plastic to withstand transformations and positioning...

the arguments against a masterpiece Movie line up are completely biased in my opinon, because of the effort, time, money and complexity involved with purchasing such a figure.. but then there are those that exist out there who would have it no other way.. your post just reminded me of that fact, and lets me know that I'm not just the only one!! thanks

Just wanna say that i think skywarp-2 nailed it.
I feel exactly the same way.
A high end Masterpiece line would be fantastic and - yeah - i'd pay for it. In fact - i'd by two of each. One to keep in robot mode and the other in vehicle mode.
Right now, i've just picked up the Leader-class movie Prime and while it's nice - i would still love to have something that really captures the movie's design.
For the adult collector - there are still stuff on the Hasbro movie lineup that looks plasticky. And with all the lights and missles that you can shoot - face it, most of these action figures are for the younger crowd who want to play with it. Most adult collectors will get the Hasbro line-up for either nostalgia/completion sake ... but we would also love to have a more accurate representation of the ultra-detailed movie designs.
On that note ... anybody hear anything about the Corgi/Master Replicas statues and bust? Or the Diamond Select movie collectibles?

skywarp-2, I like your idea and hopefully someone at Hasbro HQ is listening to this. I feel that there is certainly a market for a movie line of Transformers that may be more expensive, but in the end will have the superior look, feel and overall build quality that an adult or collector can expect.

Thanks guys for your support and understanding.. its nice to know i'm not alone, and not a super detail junky... i just feel jipped after seeing what can be done with perfect grade Gundams, and the Masterpiece Transformer line, not to mention Toynami's Robotech line up, and Yomato's Macross line..then you have stuff like sideshow collectibles, or Medicom with their Real Action heroes.. stuff like that..

I gave up my Marvel legends figure and DC Direct for the 13 inch figures.. they have real costumes and real lifelike qualities.. its like a full representation of the actual comic character.. which is what I desire from some company out there to produce.. heck i'd prefer a Movie Masterpiece Line up from takara VS a Sideshow non transformable statue.. I.E. general grevious/Terminator.. but if thats my only choice then so be it.. but I still grabbed the Hasbro ones, cause for right now... thats all there is.. and they are also nice in their own right...

You see, soon enough older members will come in this thread and we'll have a lengthy discussion about nuts and legumes.

Don't forget about the Titanium Line. The figures are pretty much based on older tfs that the newer generations wouldn't recognise.
