Hey,

I am looking at getting started in kitbashing and doing a lot from scratch what are some of the tools and things that you think are mandatory for doing this hobby?

Well, it all depends on what you plan on doing, but my basics include:

A desk to work on (and I highly recommend a "self-healing" mat to protect it)
X-Acto knives & spare blades
Glue (super glue, hobby cement, two-part epoxy putty)
A good selection of paintbrushes, paints, thinners and sealants (I go with Testors, but any hobby paint will work) An airbrush is optional.
A Dremel (you can cut, sand and sculpt by hand if you want to, but really, why? Dremels are cheap)
Sanding films and sticks(for detail work)

Beyond that? A plan, and patience. Lots and lots of patience.

Thanks Skyfier77. What material do you use when you are adding parts on or building from scratch?

Usually either spares from my scale models, styrene (sheet, rod, whatever), or the aforementioned two-part epoxy putty (I bought a 6-pack of Mighty Putty for $8 a few years back. Money well spent). I had an '07 Movie Brawl that was short the blades on his left side, so I fabbed up a pair and painted them.
