Villains That Were Better Off Solo?

Postby Nuffs » Mon Feb 18, 2008 5:10 pm

In any series of fiction, which two or more antagonists that you liked teamed up and you had great hopes for this new alliance...only for the new group to fail completely?

I nominate:

Rampage from Beast Wars was an absolute monster by himself, but promptly became cannon fodder as a Predacon.

Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He was badass by himself, but when he allienged himself with Krang he was suddenly a stupid sidekick.

I'd say SixShot. Was fine on his own, go to involved with the Cons and they tried to kill him.

Dana from Acording to Jim, once she got married she got pregnant and alot less hot

Green Goblin comes to mind first. Alone he was a serious challenge for Spider-Man. Teamed with the Sinister Six or Ultimate Six, they were still just a serious challenge for Spider-Man, and took about the same amount of time for Peter to defeat as Greenie by himself.

But the ultimate in disappointing team-ups goes to Joker and Carnage. When Spidey and Batman finally found them, the fight lasted like three pages.

Slade from the Teen Titans animated series. Really? What's the use of all those androids? He's a one man army himself!

Mr. Freeze, why the henchmen and women? With his freezing gun and his suit and strength, why bother?

I agree on Shredder.

How about this? Any bad guy who is the ulmate and strongest guy to beat who has henchmen or henchwomen? That's easier to say for me.

Motto: "I'd just like to remind you all that I'm best. Thank you."
Weapon: Mighty Ear
Joker.. as cute as Harley was... eh.

Megabyte from ReBoot coulda done without Hexidecimal's input...

I agree with the Rampage one, he was badass when he wasn't being Meg's bitch.

I kinda think Cybertron Sideways was doing fine without Soundwave... Even more before Thrust joined on in Armada.

Actually, going back to Batman, I don't like the idea of random villains getting together like they did a lot in his stories... Better on their own.

True this. Very true. You could say the same about a lot of its members. But (and here comes something straight from left field) what's better? If better means "more skilled," I'm with you. If better means "more enjoyable," I thought the Sinister Six was cool... even if it wasn't more than or as much as the sum of its parts.

Yeah, yeah, I know you meant "more skilled." I'm just getting too off for a conversation about villains, but them's my two cents. :P to ya. How's that for another can of worms?

EDIT: Just a thought, but along Spidey villains, what did you think of the Maximum Carnage team-up? Carnage, Shriek, Doppelganger, Demogoblin, Carrion, etc. Same thing? Or were those villains better for the team-up (even if Doppelganger got killed, R.I.P.)?

Well, and besides the entertainment value both groups can claim, the Ultimate Six did have one major barrier it faced - the Ultimates. I suppose without Thor, Cap, Stark, Hawkeye, Wasp, and Fury Spider-Man wouldn't have faired so well.

Believe it or not, I didn't get into Spider-Man until after the Maximum Carnage story-arc!

I started watching the Animated Series when I was in fourth or fifth grade, and then began collecting the Ultimate series when I started High School.

.: What I know of 616 Spider-Man is gleaned from articles, plot summaries, reviews, etc.

My impression of Maximum Carnage though was that it was a Story Arc made to spawn a video game. The team up of various villains just lent itself too well to VG design to be a coincidence. And aside from that, I'm just not a fan of the characters that formed that alliance. Carnage is a great villain, but makes little sense in a team context. They tried to rationalize it as being a 'family' rather than a team, but we know how Cletus and the Symbiote both feel about family. The other villains were just meh.

Give me the classics - Doc Ock, Rhino, Scorpion, Vulture, Chameleon, Kraven - I always liked the totemistic animal characters, especially Scorpion. And of course, the Elementals - Hydroman, Sandman, and Electro - Throw in Whirlwind, Blizzard, and Pyro and you have an Elemental Six!
