What does your spouse/significant other think?

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

What does your spouse/significant other think?

I was just curious how everyone's wives/gf's. etc. felt about their collecting habits. Any hassles from the little lady on how much you spend or that you collect toys well into adulthood?

On my end, my wife is great. She doesn't have the knowledge of Trasnformers I have and while I'm definitely the bigger fan, she's into things as well. She knows a lot of characters, watches all the shows (with or without me) and loves transforming the figs. Sometimes I have to be the one who says "no, we shouldn't buy that, we already bought enough this month" She's not someone who'd drop $500 on one Transformer but rather would buy every new one if I wanted to.

Oh, and this year will be our second Botcon for both of us.

Mine is tolerant. She went to Botcon with me last year and thinks I have a lot of figures. If she only knew how much I really spent...

All in all, she is cool with it.

I'm single and live alone. I keep the bilk of my figures in my 2 back rooms, cause I know it's not for everyone, especialy those who think "hey look at the toys, let me find a lighter!"

But girls that I bring over, some see the stuff that I have laying around and think it's fun, and play alittle. Others turn and walk right out.

Either way it's fine with me! Very few though know the depths of the madness. So as I'm single, I'm going to leave this coment a bit open ended.

Congrats to the members who found others who just aren't going to yard sale their collections! It happened to my brother in law, I still feel bad that my sister pretty much gave his vintage die cast car collection away.

I'd kill her

My wife is supportive of my collecting. She's been on many TF hunts with me over the last couple of years, and will usually call me if she is in store and sees figures she thinks I may not have. She actually convinced me to buy last years Botcon set. When I told her the news that I would probably never get to complete my classics seekers because of the exclusive set, she wanted to know why. I told her I just didn't think it was a good idea to spend 279.00 on figures. Her response was go ahead an get them you know you'll regret it if you don't. Her only complaint is the amount of room my collection takes up and that I don't dust it enough for her taste. Other than that she's great, but then again I don't really have any other hobbies like golf or hunting. Working out is my only other hobby and it doesn't cost me anything at this point since I own all the equipment.

My girl/wife 2 be is cool with it. I actually got her into transformers after she seen the movie with me and my step brother. She likes optimus prime now. She just bought the optimus keychain for her work keys the otherday. But even before that she is fine with it. As long as the bills are paid on time. She also comes on transformer hunts with me from store to store.

My girlf definetly thinks im a little addicted to action figures period but she's guilty of playing with some of my transformers herself haha, so she can't hate them. Ive shown her a couple transformers she's actually thought were quite amazing (MP Megatron, a custom Zombie Alternators Prime etc.) She'll come with me to browse the store aisle's too so i guess she's pretty cool with it, lucky me heh heh.

My wife honestly thinks I'm strange and she said so the other day. She doesn't understand why someone who is 31 would spend all this money on "toys" especially when we have a 3 month old and I should be buying diapers and formula.

I've only started collecting since September and I've spent about 6k so far so I can see why she thinks I'm "strange".

We also had to have a repair done today on our office window and she said when the repair guy walked into the room (the room where my display cases are), he just stopped dead in his tracks and said "WOAH!!!!".

Her response, "yeah, this is my husbands hobby."

It's become the joke of the family and my friends who think I'm nuts have been leaving transformers stickers on my car and stuff because they just think it's the most ridiculous thing ever and I could be spending my money more wisely.

She tolerates it because she knows it makes me happy but the sad thing is I have other hobbies that I spend a lot of money on - cars and golf.

My fiancee is totally supportive of my hobby. She will be with me at botcon this yr. and a matter of fact likes them too! She does'nt collect them or watch the movie or cartoon series all the time like i do. She has her hobby which is shopping and i have mine. As long as they don't take over your whole life and cause major problems with your relationship or your financial situation there should'nt be a problem. In a matter of fact she just watched a few episodes of the G1 series last night with me! She loved the episode Grimlocks new brain because that's her favorite TFs character. So again she's very supportive and i think that's important. She's always helping me find certain figures and i help her with her shopping by going with her and giving my opinion. I think if she were'nt or if i was'nt supportive or at least a little interested in each others hobbies it would'nt be as fun!

My darling is just bad as I am. She collects all kinds of toys and Anime/Game merchandise, so we really have nothing to worry about with each other's hobbies, because they pretty much overlap.

Well, a few things here. When you have kids involved obviously you have to take a long look at your priorities.

Of course, you could always tell her that you want to pass these toys unto your children.

I think we've all been where you are in terms of overspending a bit, hopefully you can find a way to enjoy your hobby and still take care of the things that matter more.

My husband is tollerant. He often looks at my figures and shakes his head or points out figures and says "that's not Starscream". He's okay with my collection saying that "it's better than something like smoking or drugs". He's pretty cool with it and I let him do what he wants to do.

My girlfriend started out tolerant, but after going with me to BotCon last year (my first convention as well as hers), she's become entertained. Her favorite tv series is Beast Machines. She's not much on the toys, but she does try. She just has a really hard time remembering which ones I don't have already. She's okay with me spending the money on TFs as long as it doesn't interfere with paying bills or taking her out. I don't normally spend large amounts on TFs though, maybe $20-40 a month.

Til BotCon, of course, to which she's agreed to accompany me again this year. It really is more fun when she's around, she laughs at me when I get all giddy. :)

My girlfriend supports my transformer collecting. She thinks they are cool. Sometimes i let her check out an older one she thinks looks cool and new ones i let her have a go at. She just has a slight issue with all the money that is spent on them. Which is why I have cut down and spend less than half of whay i used to spend a month. Also as my collection gets bigger I have had to pack more and more away. There is simply not enough room in our apartment and it will be some time before we are able to move.

Well fellas, I may not share the vast ammounts of life experience nor do I have an extensive collection. But Transformers is still a vice for me.

I can confidently say that Transformers along with a few other factors cost me my last relationship.

But I have learned my lesson and will go on.

I think everything in life needs a balance and a hobby like Transformers collecting is no exception. I don't think you need to spend your life savings on it nor do I think a girl needs to dump you just because you collect something.

Girls overspend on their collections too, except for them it is usually clothes and shoes.

My wife likes transformers so i have no worries. Its actually cool because i like megatron and she likes optimus prime so there is always a fued there. She dosent bitch at me for buying tons of figures all the time. Her motto is that if we can afford them then its no problem. She buys hers and i buy mine and we combine our collection. A friend of mine has a girlfriend who hates that he buys transformers. She says its kids stuff. Im happy my wife dosent think like that.We are both fansand I think its because we are both around the same age im 25 she is 24 and we both grew up with it. She is a girly girl but she never played with my little pony. She played with her brothers transformers figures so she knows all about it.

My husband is very much a TF fan, and got me in to it. I didn't have much exposure to Gen1 as a kid so I was glad to have his expertise on the subject as I entered the universe. He knew we shared a love of sci-fi when we met, and Transformers is sci-fi at it's best. (My favorite actually, surpassing anything else I've ever read or watched.)

I've gone a bit past him fan-wise now, branching off in to several continuities. I'm just starting to get him interested in Animated (thanks to "Lost and Found"), Galaxy Force, and the IDW story, if not reading the IDW comics himself. If I can get him reading the comics with me I'll be set. I've practically recited the Megatron: Origin-Devastation to him in their entirety by now. Maybe he feels like he already has read them! :P

We've got a growing collection of TF toys, hope to get a ton more. You know you're in love when you transform Sixshot together.

No BotCon for us this year, hopefully it will hit the west coast in '09. We've already swore to go next year.
In a place such as this, you are the perfect prey for a brest animal!

I really do think any husband/wife that has a serious mutual interest in Transformers should make a point to go to Botcon.

It was such a great experience for Jaime and me, and besides, it would be nice now that we are going on a yearly basis to meet up with some other TF couples at future cons.

My wife is tolerant, somewhat. Every now and then words like "geeky" and "loser" come out of her mouth. Although she doesn't say anything when I buy toys, none can be displayed in the house. I find her attitude towards the whole thing gets better every year. She even wanted a Bumblebee after seeing the movie.

if anything i think i clown on myself for it more than my friends/ex girlfriend do.....
i get embarrassed that my old friends know, i am scared to let in on it at work, so much so, that i avoided conversations about the new movie for fear of "being found out".

my ex still sees me once in a while but we are not together. she didnt mind that i had them on the shelves, but when the comics started bein read on the toilet, the beast wars was on as she tried to sleep, the g1 wave that came in over time after i discovered ebay, sitting on the bed with her AND g1 scorponok watchin tv......

she never said anything negative but she did get neglected by me......

an i cant blame the TFs for that, i just love them too much, so that now i am at a serious cross roads ....do i sell my AWESOME collection, put it in boxes, or display them in the closet on the shelves, leavin no room for clothes, or out in the room, where they tend to look tacky.....

man.......i just wish i could be happy with my stuff
