It is a slight change from 1st Gen's telling.
I like this idea of Rodimus being Optimus's apprentice instead of some hot shot who's suddenly the new leader. If there's ever a G1 reboot show, I vote for this to be the new movies plot. I'd just add on thing. Keep the beginning of the original with the Battle at Autobot City, Optimus Prime vs Megatron:The Final Battle. But have Prime on his death bed during the rest of the movie, until Hot Rod uses the Matrix to destroy Unicron and revive Prime and the other Autobots. It would be very dramatic that way.
Yeah, I was thinking Hotrod would have gotten a better rap if he didn't single handedly pull a Starscream and get rewarded for it.
Sure Prime's critical damage could have been atributed to him but that added with his taking the Prime mantel and matrix in the same 90 minutes... There had to be a better way.
I'ld still like Ultra Magnus to exist though. He could lead the wreckers as the post movie Dinobots seeing as the season 1 toys were being phased out. I'ld have him arrive a little earlier but out of his armour. Have Magnus over looking Megatron's defeated frame and hard to distinguish from an uninjured Optimus.
We'ld get a little more concrete Magnus and Optimus tie in, while pushing the new characters forward. Springer would have a definite past with Hotrod and Arcee, but is appointed second under Magnus. The full Magnus and Optimus story can be explained in season 3.
Season 3 could also have Straxus (from marvel comics) possing as a reborn Megatron which pushes Galvatron over the edge and brings Optimus out of retirement. Straxus dies and Thunderwing is introduced. Grimlock builds the Technobots from Unicron's head. Starscream is actually given a body meshed with both Thundercraker's firepower and Skywarp's teleportation by Unicron, making him more formidable than ever before. Head masters are introduced and Scorpinok becomes a key player.
Season 4 should be interesting with all the players involved. Various master tech and pretender shells revitalize new soldiers and old. Thunderwing and Starscream make a united power play against the insane Galvatron. This is over turned by Shockwave and Scorpinok with much help from Sixshot neutralizing Ultra Magnus. Powermaster Optimus Prime is born to repay this wrong and prevent the Decepticon forces from consolidating. In the shifting of power Soundwave and Cyclonus work to restore Galvatron's sanity by purging the Megatron personality.
TF:TM2! Soundwave uploads the Megatron personality into the deactivated Megatron (season 3 Straxus body with weaker fusion canon). IDW's awaited dream fight happens. He still functions...
Scourge (or Thunderwing) gets a hold of the matrix and Alpha Trion dies. A corrupted Matrix splits Rodimus Prime into two mechs and kills his targetmaster. Apprentice Rodimus drops the Prime part after loosing his targetmaster and becoming a
Super Sports Truck while mentoring Hotshot (armada) who reminds him of his pre-movie self. Darkrod, an evil Hotrod with a targetmaster, looks to restore Unicron. He seems to have allies.
Season 5 Unicron's head is almost attached to Charr and Megatron makes his in series return (guess were) for his original fusion canon. Rodimus defeats Darkrod or goes after him. The hate plague, cosmic rust, and nucleon will bring the TF mythos to a close and all will be one in the Pax Cybertron.
