Whats that line of metal in their eyes?
In the picture, you can see the line of metal that goes across/in front of their eyes.
Is that like their eyelids or something?

its to make it more eye ballie if you look at you own eye ball you have veins around your eyeball some are noticalbe some are not thats the same situation here except there robots so its going to look like small jet turbines with wires around the eyes there eyeballs are blue and red in the center and humans have any type color there born with.
i dont feel like posting an image but if you do a side by sisde comparison of the human eye and the robot eye you can see human simuaritys between the two only differnce is one is metal and the other is organs and other stuff.

I could only suppose that it was some sort of protection to stop objects from shattering the optic lense but I don't really know.

Yeah, I think they are there to help show expression. BB's eyes had the most expression out of any of them, I think. I know they said they wanted to go with a "camera shutter" way to make their eyes emote a little better. If you noticed when BB is set free at the Hoover Dam, his eyes look like they are focusing kind of like a camera lens on Sam.

Strangely, I noticed them the most on Optimus, what with all of his dramatic dialogue closeups. They're even used for sort of emotive blinking, so as to get actual life out of the face (though, that kind of helped give me the feeling of Optimus being really damned old in the movie. With the mouth way down, and some of the dialogue, he just comes across as worn down). They can't randomly make the eyes squish and stretch like in a cartoon after all.
