I just had a $400 Valve Trombone sent to me from the other end of the country. It weighs a hell of a lot more than a bunch of plastic figures and came registered post.
The seller was kind enough to split the postage with me. It cost me $20.
That seller is either insane, or the US Postal Service is incredibly expensive.

In the description he offers free shipping in the US, so why is there a $20.00 postage fee? I never use eBay, is that normal?

No, that's not normal. It's either free shipping or not. Either they're careless and forgot to update the description, or they're trying to pull a fast one. The fact that they're asking $500 suggests to me it's the latter. I wouldn't trust a seller like this.

No but it could be the amount that he had put in for another item that weighed more and he used that item as the basis for the relisting.
Either way ... if there isn't free shipping and they're charging $20 for shipping, the cost of the item is really $520. That's why most of the items I sell have "free" shipping. If you just build the cost of shipping into the price of your item, it's a lot easier to deal with instead of nickel and diming the cost of shipping. Some sellers still don't realize that eBay takes their cut of your sale off the total price of the listing PLUS shipping now, which was done to discourage sellers who charge crazy amounts for shipping because eBay didn't use to charge their fee on the shipping cost.

I think someone was gonna quit the forums cause we didn't all blindly agree with him on everything as the omni-knowledgeable font of wisdom?

Wait, why is that fair?
Let's break it down.
They offer an item you want, not you asking them to do it.
You pay them in full.
They ship the item to you, with you expecting it to be complete and in good faith.
It comes missing a piece and/or broken, while not their fault, they sold you a faulty item which is on them and not you.
They should've paid for all damages, including return shipping. You shouldn't had to have paid a dime. I don't think that's fair at all. You did your part, they should know what they're selling, they should take the brunt of it.
It shouldn't be the customer, ever.

Isn't that kind of under the belt?
