Which DVD sets to get?

Postby Dougtron » Mon Jul 30, 2007 1:55 am

I'd like to know which DVD sets are the best? I know the R1 G1 sets Rhino released used masters that contained a lot animation errors. How do the Metrodome releases compare to the Madman set? Also how are the Madman Beast Wars sets compared to the Rhino releases? It's probably been asked several times before so sorry if there's another topic already.

I think the Metrodome and Rhino sets are the same masters. I don't know what Madman used (I asked in another thread, but haven't got a reply yet). Rhino beast wars look good, but I heard the Madman sets look better.

Hope this helps.

And by the way, the Metrodome release of the movie recently is probably the best (although it's mostly a personal preference between that and the Sony release for most people).

Metrodome was tricked into using the Rhino masters, thinking their own masters were the same (which they weren't as Rhino's masters came from Hasbro unfinished, and Metrodome's were from Sunbow/TV Loonland which were as they appeared on TV). Metrodome's titles overall has the same specials as the Rhino one, but also have several ones of their own.

The Beast Wars dvd's from Rhino are good. Madman's version are pretty much the same quality, but have some real nice specials on it, that the US version does not. Including convention panels with David Kaye and Gary Chalk.

Raymond T is 100% correct on the Madman Beast Wars DVD sets.

They are more or less the same as the Rhino releases, in terms of video quality, however, it is the Madman Extras that blow the Rhino set clear out of the water.

The Complete Madman G1 set I believe runs off the same masters Rhino used, but again it is the extras that set the Madman set apart. That and you an get all of G1 in the one set for a very low price, AU$120 or so, depending on where you get it from. (Madman themselves are very good, and postage rates quite reasonable).
Awesomesauce; Use it, you know you want to.

Just wondering, why do people talk like the G1 Rhino dvd sets are crap? I've had the whole set since they came out and watch them over and over again and I've always thought that they looked great.

Yes I notice the animation errors too, but I'm sure they were there when the show aired. Other than that the picture quality is very good and they have multiple audio options to select from. I certainly watch the toon more than the extras.

The extras do wear thin quickly, that's the only point of contention that I would agree with really. I also don't like the long time from boot up to menu screen, but that's hardly worth complaining about and I really like the Rhino menus with the animated Soundwave and Rodimus Prime etc...

You might want to take a look at this thread. Look at the visuals...

Interesting, thanks for the link. I'll have to reconsider my stance on the set I guess, but until I actually have something better looking and better packaged in my possession I still will enjoy the Rhino sets regardless. That thread certainly won't keep me from watching them.

Oh no doubt that Rhino did a bang up job on the DVD production. They just didn't deliver on the actual material. Someone who litterly grew up on the series will no the differences at first glance.

I would say that it was only the Season 1 boxset from Rhino that suffered the incomplete masters. Rhino's Season 2-4 sets looks good and I can't find any errors in them.

Any idea which of the copies you guys are talking about these are, as I have just purchased all the G1 boxsets.

You're out of your mind. Season 3 is the absolute worst when it comes to animation errors. A friend and I did nothing but sit around one afternoon and look for errors. I think we reached the pinacle when Soundwave's face broke off of his head.

Are any of these places trustable enough to buy from?

: ( I want to buy a boxset, but I've never heard about these guys before. Only the Madman and Chinese version I've heard about.

You misunderstand the frog. He's not saying that there are no errors in season 3. He saying there are no extra errors that don't belong on it. Nothing that is different from the way it was originally broadcast.

That said, there are indeed added errors or changes on season 2 and 3. But they are nowhere near as pronounced as on the Season 1 box. There are little things like sounds that don't belong or slight colouring errors. But not like reversed animations or whole backgrounds disappearing or charcters in wrong colour schemes.

Ah well ok then.

Frankly I just wish Sony or Paramount or whoever has the contract now would redo season 1. Most of it I can over look most of the time. But the scene on the ship during MTMTE where they repeat the pan across to Prime when Megs is yelling attack drives me nuts.

Not to mention releasing boxsets of RiD thur Cybertron.

RID was released in the UK, but don't expect a release in North America for years to come.
Armada has been released in the USA by Rhino in 2 boxsets.

Paramount need to get themselves organised and release Energon and Cybertron.

I believe that was an error that was in the broadcasting masters too... But other things like backgrounds that disappeared, Seekers in wrong colour schemes, or Skyfire coloured as skywarp, or Optimus throwing a boulder at Megatron who teleports out of the way but still stands when the rock hits... Stuff like that...
Koloth wrote:Not to mention releasing boxsets of RiD thur Cybertron.
Last I heard, Disney still holds the rights to RiD (don't ask me how they got them) and don't have any plans to release them... Of course, you could buy the UK boxes, who released the whole series of RiD, including the banned episodes.

That sucks. The scene bothers me more than most of the others. Not that they aren't annoying just not as blatant.

I knew about the UK RiD release but I was still hoping for a US release. Not sure about some of my DVD players region compatiblity.

Yes, Disney bought the rights to several of their shows and Robots In Disguise was thrown in there to sweeten the deal so to speak...and now were stuck with Disney not doing anything with the rights to them... :-(

Well, you Americans are stuck with them. *Hugs RiD UK DVD boxes signed by Neil Kaplan* :P

Knowing Disney they will try to pull the whole "limited release. First time in 10 years. Only availble for a short time and then we will lock it back up in the vault." Scams that they like to pull with all their properties. And in so doing they gareentee they can continue to get $20 each for all their movies because they don't have to worry about market saturation and a Disney movie never ends up in the bargain bin.

Maybe. Or they'll pull that other Disney special by simply never releasing it...

I'm told they've bought and sat on the distribution rights to several anime properties to ensure they don't cut into Disney's market share.

That has to hurt there profit margin at least to a degree. They have to pay for those distribution rights after all. And they have released most of Hayao Miyazaki's work.
