Which series do you consider to be "canon?" (cartoon and/or comic)

Discuss anything about the Transformers cartoons and comics! You can discuss anything from G1 to Cybertron as well as the comics from Marvel, Dreamwave, IDW and more!

As someone said: Everything's canon. I of course grew up with the cartoon as a kid, so when I think of G1 TF, it's the first image that comes to mind. Nothing wrong with that.

But when Titan put out all of the Marvel series in TPB form, of which I had never read more than a select few issues back during my youth, I felt like a kid again, discovering them for the first time. I wished (and still do) for a world in which Sunbow and Marvel Comics had worked together to make some elements common across both depictions; I would have loved to see Shockwave get a few cartoon episodes trying to usurp control from Megatron, or Buster Witwicky being introduced, just as I would have liked to see Quintessons in the Marvel US comic, and some real presence for most of the season 3 cast (though of course we have Marvel UK for that).

While I have a respect for Headmasters and beyond, I just can't watch them and think of them as continuations of the same cartoon I grew up with; it just feels too different. The most I can say is they're outside of my "personal canon". It ends with Rebirth for me (and then of course rewinds with Beast Wars!).

Well, it's a good thing that Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers and Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers 2010 aren't the same exact shows as The Transformers. ;)

I more or less build my own canon out of what I like from different continuities and what seems to make sense together. For instance, I'm not a fan of the movies, so I can just write that stuff out of my personal canon, while including elements I do like. Sentinal Prime is fairly cool, so his DOTM incarnation is the one a young Megatron kills at the end of Origin, which then beings the War Within, through to G1 but stopping after The Rebirth and then having BW/BM as the ending point. Various things like the Club fiction or IDW/DW comics fill in spaces between shows, like the DW G1 series that ended with Sunstorm and all of that fills gaps in the G1 show or are things that happen around the events of the show.
I don't know, it's complicated to explain but it makes pretty good sense to me, and then I can ignore the stupid parts of the fiction insomuch as I know they exist and I know what they entail, but I don't have to try reconciling them with the parts I do like.

That's fanon, not canon. Big difference. Fanon is personal, canon is official.

Well then, in response to the question posed by the thread, I suppose my canon is my own personal fanon.

Well, of course your personal canon is fanon, that's how fanon works. Like I said, canon is official, fanon is, as the name suggest, unofficial and made by fans.

Just in case we're being far too literal here, I understand the difference between the two. I'm saying that I treat my own constructed canon, or "fanon" in the parlance of our time, as superceeding what is "Official canon." I am aware of the "official" canon and am able to use it in conversation with others, but I'm more interested in my own version, mainly because I'm a thug like that.

Well, I like the whole tapestry of the Transformers Universe. I love the multiple continuities. I'm a big fan of the '07 movie continuity, Armada, Animated and Beast Wars.

As far as G1 goes, my "canon" would be the UK comic. It blends elements from the G1 comic (which I grew up on) and the classic movie, while phasing out silly things like Primacron. In my opinion, that's the best of the G1 continuities. I really love what IDW has done with the brand, though.

Am I the only one who thinks Furman's UK work is far better than his US work?

I personally think it was mostly just as good as his U.S. G1 work. Though, his best stories above all, IMO, were "The Legacy of Unicron", "Target: 2006", and "Time Wars".

Though, I still don't get why he had to write out his UK Megatron as being a fake. He could have had Megatron's return in the U.S. run say that he was blown by the Space Bridge to a location on Earth, and decided to lay low for a while before eventually returning to Cybertron. Unless there was some internal reason for it, he didn't need to write off UK Megatron as being a Straxus-made clone and bring in a second Megatron as the real one.

the Straxus clone was fun though
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn and any Webdiver toys.

Yeah, but the post-Time Wars future shows a Galvatron made from the Straxus clone instead of the real Megatron.
