Weapon: Nuclear Charged Fusion Cannon
All I have is MP01 (original Takara version) so I guess it's my worst by default. :sad:

But it's also my best, and I love the thing. :BOWDOWN:

Starscream was only the second mold in the series (MP-02 was basically MP-01 painted white) and the direction of the MP line was "Transformers made with as much awesome engineering and clever details as possible" rather than "Transformers made as close to the G1 cartoon as possible". I'm pretty sure MP-03 was liked a lot better in Japan, mainly because Japanese collectors are far more open to novelty/unique figures, and Shoji Kawamori is a seriously famous guy in Japan, and pretty much THE guy to do jet transformations- thus his personal take on Starscream was considered something of a holy grail to Transformers fans, Macross fans and mecha fans in general.
thanks for that! ive always been a big fan of MP03, but knowing how and why it came to be is nice ;)

Nice story, but not how it actually happened.

He was handed the project as it was nearly done, he was also the same guy who designed the original toy for Diaclone. He didn't want to have it be a larger version of an already existing older toy. On top of that Macross and other mecha of that ilk regained a lot of popularity at the time so he purposely designed Starscream to appeal to people who were fans of those series, which meant making him look like he had swords, and favoring the jet mode over the robot mode. Pretty sure that's why the figure came with a tiny figure that could sit in the cockpit, so that Macross fans could be fooled into seeing it as Starscream's pilot.

Just how fragile is MP Megatron? I avoided getting him because of the bad rep, but I keep thinking he's sort of essential if you collect any masterpieces (I only have a few and now he seems conspicuous by his absence)

From my experience, he's more fidgety than fragile. I've always liked him, but I'm part of a very small minority. Strangely enough, him and MP01 scale really well with BW figures.

If you're looking into it, watch eBay seller Lena. He/she puts up like 673 MP05's a week. They're loose'ish as in there's no box, but they're in the plastic insert with all accessories and usually finish for under 100 bucks.

Think MP-05 is the worst of the Masterpieces.

Lena gives you a box, they just dont put it in the main pic. And the problem with him is that he doesnt stand up too well due to having very thin legs. he is SUPER fidgety and parts pop off all the time. He is also quite fragile though and can be broken. Some plastic is very thin and it can get bent out of shape. I would put that under fragile.

I don't think MP Megatron is Fragile at all. It took a shelf dive during the Earth Quake in NY a few years back and everything was fine. Nothing broke. It was a good 5 ft fall too.

@WJ
*shrug* I can only speak from experience. My MP05 never broke, and worst I can say about it is that he was difficult to pose with the weight of that cannon.

I think the difference here is that you purchased one on the market while I bought a factory reject. And one of ours isnt faring well, not hard not guess which one ;) Although I did transform mine at least 6 times back and forth, dont know if anyone else gave their toy as much strain.

Although I did hear that some people broke the barrel of the gun because they didnt extend it out before flipping it back. Also there is this quote from wiki:

Given the relatively thin clips throughout the toy to hold it tightly together in gun mode, Megatron's plastic components are particularly prone to breakage, especially on the clips on the upper black grip plates and some of the silver sections near the trigger.

I would say you are very careful or lucky with your toys. Like that fully functional Randy you recently purchased.
