I remember this show as well, I had a few of them.
I had the T-rex version seen in the show.

Interesting conicidence. I just got done watching all fifteen episodes myself last night.
Yes, I'm pretty sure this short miniseries provided Sunbow with a training ground for when the would eventually produce the franchise we've all gotten to know and love.
If you listen closely you can hear sound effects that were recycled into the G1 cartoon (when Tyrannix smashes up Jarrok and Argus in the opening credits, you hear some very distinctive "clanking" sounds).
Some of the soundtrack was also reused in season 2 of G1.

Also, the sound that Unicron makes after consuming Lithone in the movie is used in this show.
They could be in the same universe as well.
TF season 3 since they never give the year that Robotix is set in, and who knows if the battlecruiser that shot down the humans could've been a Decepticon or Quintesson battlecrusier.
It's fun to imagine the possiablities.

I absoluetly loved this movie when I was a kid. I remember I used to have my mom rent it for me just as much as I rented Transformers videoss (1st season episodes). Very nostalgic piece of entertainment!
