Well, giving stuff is the original purpose. (IE, Nicholas' practice of giving thing to other people, which evolved into people giving gifts to one another) But I wouldn't expect Sly to get that.

Does anyone outside of Italy still celebrate the Epiphany (6th January)?

I could check, but thought I'd move the conversation along from penises and coal.

't Is the season to be merry.

But the 6th? Not so much, it however is the day I quit wishing people a happy new year and the day my 'tree' must be taken down. Over here we call it 'three kings' and outside of the church, it has no meaning.

Yeah, the Epiphany happened to the Three Kings, according to Christian lore, and that is the general tradition.

Italy also has the added commercial side of stockings with sweets and coal, sometimes small toys. A Fascist regime introduction/reworking, and one that still lags thanks to the presence of the church in the country, as festivites were all shifted around to fit Mussolini's ideology and personal cult - so now Italians do all of them. Of course. Waiting for non-Christian festivities to join in, too, eventually.

How very Italian. :michaelbay:

It's funny how the cultural interpretation these weeks varies from country to country. Do you still receive/give presents on the 25th?

We (the Dutch) don't do it traditionally, but it's more and more common with US influence. We've got december the 5th for that.

It's an amalgamation of numerous winter-based holidays, all of which took place around the same time as Christmas. (Which, in itself, still featured gift-giving; for instance, gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh) So in a weird way, it could still be seen as a time of togetherness, not just of people, but of their various holiday celebrations.

That's a good point, Shadowman. A very good point.

Also, I think one of the other holidays you're talking about was some pagen thing, and way back when the Catholic Church was deciding when it wanted Christmas placed on the Julio-Gregorian calender, they replaced this pagen day with Christmas. For obvious reasons.

something like that ;)

Pepernoot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pepernoot
Course Dessert
Place of origin Netherlands
Main ingredients

Flour
Sugar
Aniseed
Cinnamon
Cloves

A pepernoot ['peːpərnoːt] (plural: pepernoten ['peːpərnoːtə]) (literally, "pepper nuts", the Dutch equivalent of Pfeffernüsse) is a cookie-like kind of confectionery, traditionally associated with the early December Sinterklaas holiday in the Netherlands.

They are light brown, round shaped, and made from the same ingredients as taai-taai: flour, sugar, anise, cinnamon, and clove. They are fairly chewy, though they harden gradually when exposed to the air.

A particularly distinct custom associated with pepernoten is throwing them in handfuls through the room so children can look for them. Originally this is an ancient fertility symbol (like a farmer sowing seeds) not unlike throwing rice at a marriage.

Image

and the other ones, also usually called pepernoten, are kruidnoten

Kruidnoten (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈkrœytnoːtə(n)]) are a cookie-like confectionery, traditionally associated with the early December Sinterklaas holiday in the Netherlands.

The term kruidnoten is often confused with pepernoten.[1][2] Kruidnoten, which translates to "spice nuts" in English, are harder, have a different colour and shape, and are made with the same ingredients as speculoos.[3]

Another variety of kruidnoten, called chocolade-kruidnoten, are covered in either milk, dark, or white chocolate.[4]

Thanks for the info, Wilco. In my culinary classes I had some limited experience with the different winter holiday cookies, but we mostly stuck to the American ones.
