What I've heard is that he tends to be a loner. He has low intelligence and he has to be watched over by either Megatron or Starscream during a battle. He has the ability to teleport, but due to his low intelligence he doesn't use this ability very well and has to be told when to use it. Personality-wise, he has a tendancy to get moody and angry.

There definately is a Masterpiece Skywarp coming out, and at a lot of stores he can now be put on preorder. Instead of him having a smirk face like Starscream, he has a snarling angry face. I want to get him, as I think he is so cool

In the War within comic its the other way around, Skywarp always bails starscream out of trouble and just hangs around with starscream coz they are friends and the same model. theres one scene where starscream walks into a trap and he manages to warp them out before the whole place blew up. just after that he tells starscream to "shut up" and him and Thundercracker fly off leaving starscream behind.

He prefers to do the job "quickly and cleanly"

He's loyal to megatron but he goes with some of starscreams ideas because they are friends and having a friend as a leader would elevate his status among the decepticons, whereas serving megatron he's just an expendable goon.

Thats my take on Skywarp. :)

Actually, Skywarp doesn't lack intelligence. What his original tech specs and universe profile say is that he isn't "very bright", which to me implies more of a lack of common sense than intelligence. In fact, I still have Skywarp tech specs from over 20 years ago that rate him as very high in intelligence. It's interesting to note that while original sources describe him as not very bright or smart, they also describe him as the "sneakiest of Decepticons".

Skywarp is also characterized by his blind loyalty to Megatron.

In fact, you can read his bio right here: http://www.seibertron.com/comics/universe/original/?tf_id=skywarp

Interesting that Scorpomax brings up Skywarp's old tech specs since there has long been speculation of a mix up between Skywarp's and Starscream's tech specs.

Look at Skywarp's rank of 9 compared to Aerospace commander Starscream's rank of 6 or 7, I don't remember exactly.

If you want another cool Skywarp toy, I recommend the Robotmasters two pack of he and Thundercracker.

Different than the G1 show, where he seems like he knows that SS will eventually meet his demises by Megatron and awaits that time to become Megs' new second-in-command.

I've definitely never had him pegged as a moody loner - maybe Armada, but not G1.

The impression I always had of him (which was pretty much confirmed by the DW bios) is that he's not particularly intelligent, but generally pretty popular with the others because of his creative (and destructive) 'practical' jokes. In battle, he particularly likes teleporting in for sneak attacks (as in the cartoon, in MTMTE).
He's not smart enough tactically to be a commander, but as long as he's got someone watching over him, he's fine with following orders.

I don't think he and Starscream are friends at all. I think he's as irritated with SS as everyone else is, but hell, he is his immediate commander, so he doesn't have much choice but to put up with him. But he does get on well with Thundercracker - I get the feeling that they probably have a similar relationship to Runabout and Runamuck, where Skywarp is the 'leader' and Thundercracker is the 'follower'. I think Skywarp is probably the 'Con who has the greatest hand in convincing TC that he's doing the 'right' thing by staying with the Decepticons.

Well, I always found it interesting that's Skywarp and Thundercracker can get along very well, because they can relate. I guess Starscream is sorta of an outcast because he's greeky or smart?

QFT. If Skywarp is the reason Thundercracker hangs around, SS is one of the reasons 'Cracker has doubts about where he is.

I agree that Skywarp's not exactly an idiot, but 'not too bright' is the best way to describe him. I think it was in the episode 'B.O.T' where Swindle sold off the rest of the Combaticons for parts, and Megs sent Skywarp to investigate. He finds a trail of parts, and asks Megatron what to do, to which Megs replies "Follow the trail, dummy!"

One of the reasons I'd kill for a new G1 series bearing the original cast is that I know that they'd place more emphasis on characterization than the old one did, and Skywarp & 'Cracker could really benefit from that. I've always liked the fact that Skywarp could be one of the Decepticons' single greatest assets what with that teleportation ability (for which, in the cartoon, he had to request permission from Megatron to use on one occasion), and would be really deadly if he had any ambitions to power, or more common sense.

I'd love to see him expanded upon, perhaps in an IDW Spotlight issue. It would be great to see how he got the ability to teleport - that's a power far and away from any of the others' specialized weapons, and I imagine he was granted it at some point. Perhaps he volunteered for a dangerous experiment?

EDIT: The more I think about the experimentation idea, the more I like it. I think back to the first part of the Megatron: Origins comic, and how callously the workers were treated by the senate - maybe one of them acted up at one point and got incapacitated and 'chosen' for a risky procedure... :-?

I'm a Screamer fan, but I don't really care if people hate him for being a annoying geek, etc. So no, I won't "mod" anyone. (:|

Anyway...

Thundercracker has doubts? In the cartoon, or comic? I don't remember much of him. I guess Skywarp and Thundercracker had less screen time? Sorry, I guess I have to watch my G1 espoides or re read my comics.

Thundercracker's heart wasn't completely in the war and he thought that the way the Decepticons went about it was wrong. In his eyes killing his fellow Transformers was very wrong, and there had to be a better way of doing things. But in the same token if push came to shove he'd kill to protect himself and those he cares about. This wasn't really touched on in the cartoon or the comic that I remember but it was mentioned in his bio. Some may call him a hypocrite for this but I tend to believe he had a Warrior's code of honor. He seemed to be older then both Skywarp and Starscream and I tend to think that the reason for him not outranking them both is the fact that he was burnt out on the war in and of it's self.

As far as Skywarp goes I don't think he was stupid or had low intelligence. I favor the idea that he had average intelligence but was nervious and paranoid (Megatron was an overbearing asshole most of the time.) His meanstreak and mischievious tendencies are manifestations of his frustration. He's the type of person that lashed out at whoever was around him and annoyed him at the time. I remember several times where he got annoyed with his fellow Decepticons and it escalated into a full blown fist fight. I see him as someone that'll follow whoever's in charge (in DW's Vol.2 when he and Thundercracker are taking an Energon bath and talking TC asks SW what he thinks they should do and he replies "We follow whoever has the biggest guns." or something to that effect).

Of all the Decepticons he's closest to Thundercracker which is obvious as their seen hanging out quite alot in all the various fictions. I tend to think that while he doesn't like Starscream very much he at leasts respects his ability when Starscream isn't doing something to piss him off. Two examples for both extremes: the original Triad works as a team to fight Optimus Prime, under Starscream's command, and they critically injure him. But there's also the e-novel (collected in a Hardcover exclusive to the SFBC) Hardwired Trilogy, where after Starscream defeats Megatron and takes over he personally challenges him to a one on one fight because he believes Starscream to have acted not only selfishly but dishonorably.

Skywarp is multifaceted and it's a pity that the writers didn't spend that much time on he or Thundercracker. There's a wealth of stories that could be told centering on these two. But I suppose that's what new canon comics, books and fan fictions are for.

I really agree with you there, I'd love to see a Skywarp Spotlight as he's always been one of my favorite characters. I also like your ideas about how he got his teleportation powers. To me it seemed like a very specialized and powerful ability and he must be very good at what he does to be able to do this. Makes you wonder... :D
